Storie di ordinaria corruzione. Libanio, Orazioni LVI, LVII, XLVI Introduzione, traduzione e commento storico

2010

2023

International audience; Recent excavations carried out between 2011-2016 in the ancient and medieval town of Soyons (Ardèche), located in the middle Rhône valley, in the territory of the roman colony of Valence, provide us new data on the occupation of the hilltop of Le Malpas. The study of the fortification of the Iron age has revealed the existence of a rampart built during the 3rd century AD. At this time, the lower city, under the actual village, is gradually abandoned. After a probable hiatus during the 4th century AD, the hilltop and the lower city grew again during the 5th and the 6th century AD. The late antique artefacts discovered in all the trenches dug on the Malpas let us assume…

The Ancient Commentators of Plato and Aristotle

2009

In late antiquity the works of Plato and Aristotle were subject to intense study, which eventually led to the development of a new literary form, the philosophical commentary. Until recently these commentaries were understood chiefly as sources of information for the masters, Plato and Aristotle, they commented upon. However, in recent years, it has become increasingly acknowledged that the commentators themselves - Aspasius, Alexander, Themistius, Porphyry, Proclus, Philoponus, Simplicius and others - even though they worked in the Platonist-Aristotelian framework, contributed to this tradition in original, innovative and significant ways such that their commentaries are philosophically im…

Introduction: Using Placebo Research to Explore Belief and Healing in Late Antiquity

2021

Abstract This special issue explores belief and healing in Late Antiquity, through insight and terminology developed in modern placebo research. My introduction outlines the history of placebo research and its use in historical studies of medicine and healing. It has helped historians pose new questions to their sources and discuss them in light of modern medical research. Most studies analyse various descriptions or records of symptoms or diagnoses, but some researchers also extend their work to include social or anthropological studies of healing. Summarizing insights from such efforts in medical research and the history of medicine, I propose a selection of questions and perspectives fro…

2021

The present volume contains selected papers from the international conference on “The submerged syntax between Late Antiquity and the Modern Age. The approach that unifies this volume is mostly related to the rec…
