Effective field theories for heavy and light fermions.

In this thesis, various aspects of different effective field theory (EFT) approximations to the Standard Model of elementary particle physics have been elaborated. The EFT's treated range from non-relativistic approximations to quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which can be applied if the quanta under consideration moves at velocities small compared with the speed of light, to chiral perturbation theory as well as the effective theory which emerges in the limit of a large number of colour degrees of freedom in QCD. Photon emissivity of the quark-gluon plasma: A lattice QCD analysis of the transverse channel

We present results for the thermal photon emissivity of the quark-gluon plasma derived from spatially transverse vector correlators computed in lattice QCD at a temperature of 250 MeV. The analysis of the spectral functions, performed at fixed spatial momentum, is based on continuum-extrapolated correlators obtained with two flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions. We compare the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD correlators, as well as the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills correlators at infinite coupling, to the correlators from lattice QCD and find them to lie within $\sim10\%$ of each other. Kaon decays and other hadronic processes in lattice QCD

This doctoral thesis deals with the study of properties and interactions of light mesons. More specifically, we focus on hadronic decay and scattering processes, which are dominated by effects of the strong interaction in the low-energy regime. Concrete examples that will be addressed are the weak decay of a kaon into two pions, and the scattering of three pions. A peculiarity of the strong interaction is that perturbative expansions fail at hadronic energy scales. For this reason, genuine nonperturbative tools are essential to obtain first-principles predictions. High spin polarization in Co2CrAl–Cr superlattice

The electronic structure, magnetic properties and interface effects in Co2CrAl?Cr superstructures have been investigated by the use of first principle calculations. The results show that at the interface, a large magnetic moment and a high spin polarization can be induced by a strong ferromagnetic exchange interaction at the Cr?Co interface. However, at the CrAl?Cr interface, both the magnetic moment and the spin polarization of the Cr atoms are decreased due to a Cr?Cr antiferromagnetic interaction. Lattice Corneal Dystrophy Type 1

PURPOSE To evaluate the question whether lattice corneal dystrophy type 1 (LCD1) is of epithelial or stromal origin. METHODS The landmark of advanced LCD1 shows central superficial haze and paracentral stromal lattice lines. In 16 eyes of 8 affected individuals of 2 families, a penetrating keratoplasty was performed. The follow-up was 8 to 16 years after penetrating keratoplasty. Slit-lamp documentation of the patients was evaluated in direct and indirect illumination with dilated pupil to assess the horizontal and vertical pattern of new deposits on the corneal graft. The main result of this article is an application of [1] and [2] which yields that an at least 2-dimensional affine geometry is module-induced if and only if it is projectively embeddable into an Arguesian projective lattice geometry.
Effect of Stiffness on the Micellization Behavior of Model H4T4 Surfactant Chains

The micellization behavior of a series of model surfactants, all with four head and tail groups (H4T4) but with different degrees of chain stiffness, was studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on a cubic lattice. The critical micelle concentration, micellar size, and thermodynamics of micellization were examined. In all cases investigated, the critical micelle concentration was found to increase with increasing temperature as observed for nonionic surfactants in apolar or slightly polar solvents. Anomalous temperature dependence of the IR spectrum of polyalanine

Abstract We have studied the temperature dependence of the infrared spectra of acetanilide (ACN), tryptophan–(alanine) 15 , and tyrosine–(alanine) 15 . No sidebands of the amide-I vibration were observed in the polypeptides, but two anomalous sidebands of the NH stretch with a similar temperature dependence as that of the anomalous amide-I vibrational mode at 1650 cm −1 of crystalline ACN were detected. Fermi resonance combined with the appearance of a red-shifted sideband of NH stretch through coupling to lattice modes seems to explain this band structure. Observations are indicative of excitons that may occur in polypeptides as well as in single crystals of ACN.
Studies of Quantum Chromodynamics with the ALEPH Detector

Previously published and as vet unpublished QCD results obtained with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 are presented. The unprecedented statistics allows detailed studies of both perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of strong interactions to be carried out using hadronic Z and tau decays. The studies presented include precise determinations of the strong coupling constant. tests of its flavour independence, tests of the SU(3) gauge structure of QCD, study of coherence effects, and measurements of single-particle inclusive distributions and two-particle correlations for many identified baryons and mesons.
