STRATEGIC CHOICES FOR THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA AS EU MEMBER STATE

2012

After joining the EU in 2004, came to an end an important phase of the economic development of Latvian, which opened as new opportunities, as new challenges. Accession to the EU can be viewed on the one hand, the transitional period, on the other hand, it can be characterized as the period when Latvia was standing at the new crossroads and was ready for new, fundamental alternatives. Accession of Latvia in the EU contributed to the deepening of economic integration, radically changing the situation, as in financial, as in labor markets. Since 2004 Latvian experienced both, rapid economic growth, with GDP growth exceeded 12% per annum, and a significant recession, when GDP fell by nearly 18%…

Circularity Within the EU: The Return Intentions of Latvian Migrants

2016

Recently, much attention has been paid in the literature to circular migration because of its perceived potential to reduce permanent migration and to promote development. This is probably a result of a perfect combination of interests benefiting not only sending and receiving countries, but also the migrants themselves (Vertovec 2007; Adepoju et al. 2010; Castles and Ozkul 2014). Circularity allows migrants to gain experience and acquire skills, and to apply them on returning to their countries of origin, thereby contributing to development (Cassarino 2004; de Haas 2010, 2012), transforming brain drain into brain gain, and at the same time contributing to their positive effects on labour m…

Entrepreneurship insolvency risk management: a case of Latvia

2011

Financial crisis and its consequences are visible in the capital adequacy of many commercial banks, which indicates that the approach banks took to assess credit risk was not sufficiently sophisticated. This article discusses practical methods of insolvency risk modelling for enterprises. In this paper, the authors analysed the accuracy of ten models developed by foreign authors to assess insolvency risk, which were validated on the database of Latvian companies. The authors have shown that models developed on historical data for foreign companies are less accurate than the model developed on the basis of financial indicators of Latvian companies. The authors developed a three-factor model …
