Numerical values of MnZn ferrite nonlinear susceptibilities in a lossless approximation

2017

On the basis of expressions for nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities of soft ferrites obtained earlier the analysis of phase shifts between components of flux density on different frequencies and the magnetic field strength is carried out. Only the largest nonlinear susceptibilities those of third and fifth order are considered. It is shown that in the frequency range where losses are small and can be neglected the susceptibility of third order is negative but that of fifth order is positive. These statements allow explaining the shape of output voltage of toroidal transformer with soft ferrite core induced by strong harmonic field strength in the input. Numerical values of nonlinear suscept…

A Planar Generator for a Wave Energy Converter

2019

This article presents a permanent magnet planar translational generator which is able to exploit multiple modes of sea wave energy extraction. Linear electrical generators have recently been studied for the exploitation of sea wave energy, but, to the best of our knowledge, no synchronous planar translational generator has been proposed. In this article, to maximize the energy extraction, we have considered all the potential modes of motion due to wave excitation and included them within the mathematical model of the proposed system. The principle of operation of the generator can be summarized as follows: the moving part (translator) of the generator is driven from the sea waves and induce…

Efficiency of gyrotrons with a tapered magnetic field in the regime of soft self-excitation

2018

As a rule, gyrotron operation with high efficiency is realized in the regime of hard self-excitation that requires a special start-up scenario: either a tuning of the external magnetic field or providing certain relations between mod-anode and beam voltages. This paper describes a study of gyrotron operation in slightly tapered external magnetic fields. It is shown how the use of tapered magnetic fields affects the maximum efficiency realizable in hard and soft excitation regimes. First, a model of gyrotron with the Gaussian axial profile of the resonator field is studied. Then, a similar treatment is done for a realistic resonator designed for a 140 GHz Karlsruhe Institute for Technology g…

Radiofrequency and 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance H−volume production ion sources

2016

The volume production of negative hydrogen ions () in plasma ion sources is based on dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to rovibrationally excited hydrogen molecules (H2), which is a two-step process requiring both, hot electrons for ionization, and vibrational excitation of the H2 and cold electrons for the formation through DEA. Traditionally ion sources relying on the volume production have been tandem-type arc discharge sources equipped with biased filament cathodes sustaining the plasma by thermionic electron emission and with a magnetic filter separating the main discharge from the formation volume. The main motivation to develop ion sources based on radiofrequency (RF) or electro…

Transport properties of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ Bicrystal Grain Boundary Josephson Junctions and SQUIDs

1996

Josephson junctions and SQUIDs on 36.8° SrTiO 3 bicrystal substrates were prepared from epitaxial Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ thin films with critical temperatures around 95K. The current-voltage characteristics are well described by the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model. I c R n products of 50μV at 77K and 0.7mV at 4.2K have been reached. The I c (B) dependence is symmetric to B = 0 with an I c suppression of 90% in the first minimum. Nevertheless it turns out, that the junctions are inhomogeneous on a μm scale. SQUID modulations observed at 78K indicate a flux-voltage transfer function of 2.7μV/Φ 0 at this temperature.

Synchronous precessional motion of multiple domain in a ferromagnetic nanowire by perpendicular field pulses

2014

Magnetic storage and logic devices based on magnetic domain wall motion rely on the precise and synchronous displacement of multiple domain walls. The conventional approach using magnetic fields does not allow for the synchronous motion of multiple domains. As an alternative method, synchronous current-induced domain wall motion was studied, but the required high-current densities prevent widespread use in devices. Here we demonstrate a radically different approach: we use out-of-plane magnetic field pulses to move in-plane domains, thus combining field-induced magnetization dynamics with the ability to move neighbouring domain walls in the same direction. Micromagnetic simulations suggest …

Temperature Coefficients of Solar Cell Parameters at Maximum Power Point

2020

Analytical expressions for the temperature coefficients of the maximum power point voltage and current are presented. The temperature coefficients are calculated assuming the bandgap to be a linear function of the temperature and accounting for energy losses of non-radiative nature. The latter are introduced in the model through the External Radiative Efficiency. The so-called $\gamma$ parameter, which has been shown to account for the thermal sensitivity of all mechanisms determining the open-circuit voltage, appears to also play a role in the temperature coefficient of the maximum power point voltage and current. Numerical results and a comparison with experimental measurements are also p…

H− extraction systems for CERN’s Linac4 H− ion source

2018

Abstract Linac4 is a 160 MeV linear H −  accelerator at CERN. It is an essential part of the beam luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and will be the primary injector into the chain of circular accelerators. It aims at increasing the beam brightness by a factor of 2, when compared to the currently used 50 MeV linear proton accelerator, Linac2. Linac4’s ion source is a cesiated RF-plasma H −  ion source. Several beam extraction systems were designed for H −  beams of 45 keV energy, 50 mA intensity and an electron to H −  ratio smaller than 5. The goal was to extract a beam with an rms-emittance of 0 . 25 π  mm mrad. One of the main challenges in designing an H −  extraction…

System for control of polarization state of light and generation of light with continuously rotating linear polarization

2019

We present a technique for generating light in an arbitrary polarization state. The technique is based on interference of two orthogonally polarized light beams, whose amplitudes and phases are controlled with a Mach-Zehnder inteferometer with acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) placed in each arm. We demonstrate that via control over amplitudes, phases, and frequencies of acoustic waves driving the AOMs, any polarization state can be synthesized. In particular, we demonstrate generation of linearly polarized light, whose polarization plane continuously rotates at a rate from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. Such light finds applications in science (e.g., investigations of Bloch-Siegert effect) and technology (…
