Real-time calibration of the A4 electromagnetic lead fluoride (PbF2) calorimeter

2011

Abstract Sufficient energy resolution is the key issue for the calorimetry in particle and nuclear physics. The calorimeter of the A4 parity violation experiment at MAMI is a segmented calorimeter where the energy of an event is determined by summing the signals of neighboring channels. In this case, the precise matching of the individual modules is crucial to obtain a good energy resolution. We have developed a calibration procedure for our total absorbing electromagnetic calorimeter which consists of 1022 lead fluoride (PbF 2 ) crystals. This procedure reconstructs the single-module contributions to the events by solving a linear system of equations, involving the inversion of a 1022×1022…

Detector response of Cherenkov radiators for calorimetry in the energy range below 14 MeV

2020

Abstract A study of the detector response of PbF 2  crystals and three different types of lead glass blocks to electrons from a 14-MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI is presented. For the first time, signal height, signal width, and homogeneity of the response of these Cherenkov radiators were determined for energies between 10 and 14 MeV. To complement the beam tests, optical properties of the materials, in particular measured transmittances in the near UV and visible spectrum, were studied. The measured detector responses were also compared to Monte Carlo simulations of energy-loss, light production, transport, and detection. These Cherenkov radiators are considered as active material o…

Re-weighting at the LHC: the p–Pb data impact

2016

Abstract In this work we present selected results of a comprehensive analysis of the medium modifications in proton-lead LHC Run I data, and discuss the implications on different sets of nuclear parton densities. We find that the nuclear environment has a non-negligible relevance on the experimental results. We incorporate the information from Run I into the current nuclear densities and provide novel sets of nPDFs that will be useful for future predictions.

Observation of scattering and absorption centers in lead fluoride crystals

2006

For the first time, lead fluoride is used as a fast and compact material in electromagnetic calorimetry. Excellent optical and mechanical properties of the pure Cherenkov crystals are necessary for the A4 collaboration to perform a measurement of the nucleon's strange form factors. Visible scattering and absorption centers as well as surface damages have been investigated to characterize the quality of more than one thousand crystals. Besides, transmittance measurements have been performed on all crystals to reveal absorption bands produced by intrinsic or impurity related point-structure defects. As a consequence, 89 crystals had to be replaced by the Chinese manufacturer SICCAS.

First Exploration of Neutron Shell Structure below Lead and beyond N=126

2020

The nuclei below lead but with more than 126 neutrons are crucial to an understanding of the astrophysical r process in producing nuclei heavier than A∼190. Despite their importance, the structure and properties of these nuclei remain experimentally untested as they are difficult to produce in nuclear reactions with stable beams. In a first exploration of the shell structure of this region, neutron excitations in ^{207}Hg have been probed using the neutron-adding (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The radioactive beam of ^{206}Hg was delivered to the new ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer at an energy above the Coulomb barrier. The spectroscopy of ^{207}Hg marks a first step in improving our…

A Theoretical Prediction of the Bs-Meson Lifetime Difference

2000

We present the results of a quenched lattice calculation of the operator matrix elements relevant for predicting the Bs width difference. Our main result is (\Delta\Gamma_Bs/\Gamma_Bs)= (4.7 +/- 1.5 +/- 1.6) 10^(-2), obtained from the ratio of matrix elements, R(m_b)=/=-0.93(3)^(+0.00)_(-0.01). R(m_b) was evaluated from the two relevant B-parameters, B_S^{MSbar}(m_b)=0.86(2)^(+0.02)_(-0.03) and B_Bs^{MSbar}(m_b) = 0.91(3)^(+0.00)_(-0.06), which we computed in our simulation.

BLM scale for the pion transition form factor

2001

The NLO Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale for the pion transition form factor has been determined. To achieve that, a consistent calculation up to nf-proportional NNLO contributions to both the hard-scattering amplitude and the perturbatively calculable part of the pion distribution amplitude has been performed. By combining and matching the results obtained for these two amplitudes, a proper cancellation of collinear singularities has been established and the gamma5 ambiguity problem (related to the use of the dimensional regularization method) has been resolved by using the naive-gamma5 as well as the 't Hooft-Veltman (HV) schemes. It has been demonstrated that the prediction for the p…

Dosimetric characteristics of backscattered electrons in lead.

2000

In electron beam therapy, tissue overdose due to electrons backscattered from lead has been profusely studied. To quantify this dose enhancement effect, an electron backscatter factor (EBF) was defined as the ratio of dose at the tissue-inhomogeneity interface with and without the scatterer present. The dependence of the EBF on energy at the scatterer surface is not well known for energies lower than 3 MeV which is the most frequent clinical situation. In this work, we have done Monte Carlo calculations with the GEANT code to study EBF in lead at this energy range. The applicability of this code and the developed procedure for dose estimation has been experimentally verified. The dependence…

Background: The relation between training load, especially internal load, and the recovery-stress state is of central importance for avoiding negative adaptations in high-performance sports like swimming. The aim of this study was to analyze the individual time-delayed linear effect relationship between training load and recovery-stress state with single case time series methods and to monitor the acute recovery-stress state of high-performance swimmers in an economical and multidimensional manner over a macro cycle. The Acute Recovery and Stress Scale (ARSS) was used for daily monitoring of the recovery-stress state. The methods session-RPE (sRPE) and acute:chronic workload-ratio (ACWR) we…
