Analysis of the factors linked to a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children
2017
Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder originating from multiple factors. The aim of this study is to determine the percentage of patients with ADHD out of all patients referred to our clinic for assessment, and to explore the epidemiological and clinical factors linked to this diagnosis. Patients and methods: Retrospective analytical study of a sample of patients under 15 years old sent to the paediatric neurology clinic for suspected ADHD. DSM-IV criteria were used for diagnosis. We completed a binary logistic regression analysis to determine which risk factors were associated with the diagnosis. Results: Of the 280 selected patients, …
Depression and cognitive deficits as long-term consequences of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
2017
BACKGROUND Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an acute life-threatening microangiopathy with a tendency of relapse characterized by consumptive thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and spontaneous von Willebrand factor–induced platelet clumping leading to microthrombi. The brain is frequently affected by microthrombi leading to neurologic abnormalities of varying severity. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS The aim of this observational cohort study was to investigate the prevalence of depression and cognitive deficits in 104 patients having survived acute TTP. TTP survivors were repeatedly assessed by means of different standardized questionnaires to evaluate depression (ID…
Obstruktives Schlafapnoesyndrom durch eine berufliche Lösungsmittelexposition
2008
History and admission findings A 52-year-old man working in a chemical laboratory was referred with the possible diagnosis of toxic encephalopathy. For 17 years he had been exposed to high concentrations of perchlorethylene and n-butanol vapours which every day had caused acute symptoms of organic solvent intoxication. Current complaints were autonomic nervous system symptoms, loss of concentration and memory, and fatigue in the second half of the day. The patient was obese but in good general condition. Investigations Neuropsychiatric examination confirmed the reported loss of concentration and planning ability at work. The polysomnogram indicated an increased number of largely obstructive…
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Stress Ulcer Bleeding Prophylaxis with Proton Pump Inhibitors, H2 Receptor Antagonists
2012
Abstract Objectives Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) present varying pharmacological efficacy in preventing stress ulcer bleeding (SUB) in intensive care units. The literature also reports disparate rates of ventilator-assisted pneumonia (VAP) as side effects of these treatments. We compared the cost-effectiveness of these two prophylactic pharmacological options. Methods We constructed a decision tree with a 60-day time horizon for patients at high risk for developing SUB, receiving either PPIs or H2RAs. For each treatment strategy, patients could be in one of three states of health: SUB, VAP, or no complication. Contemporary, clinically relevant probabilit…
Adjuvant Effect of Titanium Brushes in Peri-Implant Surgical Treatment: A Systematic Review
2021
Background: the prognosis of peri-implant surgery can be affected by poor decontamination of the implant surface, which could be improved with the use of titanium brushes. The objectives of this systematic review were to evaluate the effectiveness of titanium brushes in the decontamination of the implant surface in terms of plaque index, probing depth, bleeding on probing and bone loss/gain; as well as its effectiveness according to the type of peri-implant bone defect. Methods: an electronic search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane and Embase databases, as well as a manual search. The search strategy included four keywords: “Peri-implantitis”, “Periimplantitis”, “Implant Surf…
Modelling anaerobic biomass growth kinetics with a substrate threshold concentration.
2004
Abstract Many bacteria have been observed to stop growing below a certain substrate threshold concentration. In this study, a modification of the Monod kinetics expression has been proposed to take into account this substrate threshold concentration observed in bacterial growth. Besides the threshold concentration no additional parameters have been added to the kinetic expression and so, only the substrate threshold concentration and the half-saturation constant have to be estimated for model calibration purposes. Furthermore, for parameter estimation purposes, practical identifiability of this new function has been studied and the results have been satisfactory. The new model has been appl…
Healing of intrabony defects following surgical treatment with or without an Er:YAG laser. A pilot study
2004
Aim: The aim of this controlled, parallel design clinical study was to compare the healing of intrabony periodontal defects following treatment with access flap surgery with and without debridement with an Er:YAG laser. Methods: Twenty-three patients each of whom exhibited one deep intrabony defect were randomly treated with either access flap surgery followed by root surface and defect debridement using an Er:YAG laser (KEY3®) (160 mJ, 10 Hz) (test), or with access flap surgery followed by root surface and defect debridement using hand and ultrasonic instruments (control). The following clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and at 6 months: plaque index; gingival index; bleeding on…
Personality and fatigue perception in a sample of IBD outpatients in remission: a preliminary study.
2012
International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fatigue is considered as a feature of IBD. Nevertheless, medical variables would partly explain this complex phenomenon. Psychological variables would be especially connected to fatigue for patients in remission. Moreover, personality is known to be linked to the fatigue of patients with CFS. This preliminary study aimed to determine if personality dimensions are linked to the perception of fatigue in IBD. METHODS: 81 IBD outpatients in remission completed the MFI (fatigue); ISI, EES (sleep disturbances); TCI-R (personality); HADS (depression and anxiety). Medical data were collected (ferritin, C-reactive protein, number of flare-ups, number of h…
Persistence of the effects of the covid-19 lockdown on sleep: A longitudinal study
2021
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep have been widely documented, but longitudinal evaluations during different phases of the “COVID-19 era” are needed to disentangle the specific consequences of the r145estrictive measures on sleep variables. The aim of this study was to assess the immediate effect of the lockdown’s end on sleep and sleep-related dimensions in an Italian sample, also considering the stress and depressive symptoms. We used an online survey to longitudinally collect data on sociodemographic, environmental, clinical, sleep, and sleep-related variables in two time points: during and immediately after the lockdown. The final sample included 102 participants. The large …
Sleeper effect from below: Long-term effects of source credibility and user comments on the persuasiveness of news articles
2018
User comments on news websites are a controversial element of online communication. Various studies have reported the negative effects of comments criticizing the related news articles on readers’ attitudes toward the issues described in these articles. However, these findings are mostly based on measurements directly after the reception of comments. No research has investigated the long-term effects of comments on readers’ article-related attitudes and compared them with the effects of cues emanating from the articles themselves. Therefore, this study transferred the sleeper effect in persuasion to news sites with comment sections. In a 2 × 2-experiment, the persuasiveness of an article w…
