Effect of non-surgical periodontal treatment with or without doxycycline on the periodontium of type 1 diabetic patients

2005

Aim: The present investigation was performed to study how type 1 diabetics responded to non-surgical periodontal treatment with and without adjunctive doxycycline. Method: Sixty diabetic type 1 patients (mean age 35.3 +/- 9 years) with moderate-to-severe periodontal disease were selected and divided into two groups of 30 patients each. Both groups were sex and age matched and had similar amounts of periodontal destruction. Plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment levels (CAL) were recorded. Group 1 (30 patients) was treated with oral hygiene instruction, scaling and root planing, chlorhexidine rinses twice a day and doxycycline (100 mg/day for…

Effect of EDTA root conditioning on the healing of intrabony defects treated with an enamel matrix protein derivative.

2006

Contains fulltext : 49580.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Regenerative periodontal therapy with an enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) has been shown to promote regeneration in intrabony periodontal defects. However, in most clinical studies, root surface conditioning with EDTA was performed in conjunction with the application of EMD, and, therefore, it cannot be excluded that the results may also be attributable to the effect of the root conditioning procedure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of root conditioning on the healing of intrabony defects treated with EMD. METHODS: Twenty-four patients, each of whom exhibited one deep intrabony defect…

Relaxin in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Relationship with Blood Pressure and Inflammatory Mediators

2015

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with nocturnal intermittent hypoxia, which may be responsible for increased circulating levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and inflammatory mediators, such as metalloproteinases (MMPs), and which contributes to the pathogenesis of systemic hypertension. Why some OSA patients remain normotensive is poorly understood. Relaxin-2, a pregnancy hormone, may sometimes circulate in men and could increase in hypoxic conditions. It exerts a vasodilatory activity and can modulate the release of molecules, such as MMPs and VEGF. Objectives: The objective o…

Immunophenotypical comparison of Gaucher's and pseudo-Gaucher cells.

1996

An immunohistochemical study on bone marrow biopsies and spleens of patients with Gaucher's disease and chronic myeloid leukemia was performed to investigate the immunophenotype of Gaucher's cells and pseudo-Gaucher cells. A panel of antibodies was used which were reactive on paraffin-embedded tissues and directed against different hematopoietic lineage cells. Gaucher's cells and pseudo-Gaucher cells expressed a very similar immunophenotype and displayed an intense reaction for the monocytic antibodies tested, thus confirming their common origin and that they belong to the same system. The expression of HLA-DR antigens was much stronger in Gaucher's than in pseudo-Gaucher cells. This last f…

Treatment of severe von Willebrand disease with a high‐purity von Willebrand factor concentrate (Wilfactin®): a prospective study of 50 patients

2007

Background and objectives: A plasma-derived von Willebrand factor (VWF) concentrate with low factor VIII (FVIII) content was specifically developed to treat von Willebrand disease (VWD). Efficacy and safety were investigated by merging the results of two comparable protocols conducted prospectively in 5 European and 12 French centers. Methods and results: Fifty patients with clinically severe VWD (72% had VWF ristocetin cofactor activity less than 10 IU dL(-1) and 46% had FVIII < 20 IU dL(-1)) were treated with the concentrate as the only therapy, except for clinical situations requiring a priming dose of FVIII to rapidly correct an intrinsic coagulation defect. A total of 139 spontaneous b…

Acute stress and working memory: The role of sex and cognitive stress appraisal

2016

Sex is considered a moderating factor in the relationship between stress and cognitive performance. However, sex differences and the impact of cognitive stress appraisal on working memory performance have not received much attention. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of physiological responses (heart rate and salivary cortisol) and cognitive stress appraisal in Working Memory (WM) performance in males and females. For this purpose, we subjected a comparable number of healthy young adult males (N=37) and females (N=45) to a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), and we evaluated WM performance before and after the stress task. Females performed better on att…

Effects of corticotropin-releasing hormone on respiratory parameters during sleep in normal men.

2009

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is well-known to be a centrally acting respiratory stimulant after systemic application both in healthy subjects and in patients suffering from respiratory failure. In order to study the effects of CRH on sleep EEG and respiratory parameters during sleep, 14 healthy male volunteers were investigated in a single-blind placebo controlled design. After an adaptation night, polysomnography was performed during two successive nights between 23.00 hrs. and 7.00 hrs. During one night placebo was applied, on the other 50 μg ovine CRH was administered intravenously as a bolus every hour from 0.00 hrs. to 6.00 hrs. For the assessment of respiration, blood oxygen …

Effects of subchronic paroxetine administration on night-time endocrinological profiles in healthy male volunteers

2000

Abstract To evaluate the subchronic effects of paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on nocturnal endocrinological profiles, eight healthy male volunteers with no personal or family history of a psychiatric or neurological disease were administered paroxetine (30 mg/day) or placebo in a double-blind cross-over design. Drugs were given as a single dose at 10:00 h for a period of 4 weeks each. Between days 21 and 28 of each treatment period, sleep EEG was registered for four consecutive nights from 23:00 to 07:00 h. During the last night, hormonal profiles for prolactin, growth hormone (GH), cortisol, corticotropin (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and melatonin w…

Nitric oxide metabolites and erythrocyte deformability in a group of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

2014

Our aim was to evaluate nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite and nitrate), expressed as NOx, and erythrocyte deformability, expressed as elongation index, in a group of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We enrolled 48 subjects (36 men and 12 women; mean age 50.3 ± 14.68 yrs) with OSAS diagnosed after a 1-night cardiorespiratory sleep study. OSAS severity was assessed evaluating the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) and subjects were subdivided in two subgroups: Low (L = AHI 30). NOx was examined converting nitrate into nitrite with a nitrate reductase and then assessing nitrite with spectrophotometry after the addition of Griess reagent. The elongation index was obtained using th…

Physical Activity from Childhood to Adulthood and Cognitive Performance in Midlife

2019

Introduction: Physical activity (PA) has been suggested to protect against old-age cognitive deficits. However, the independent role of childhood/youth PA for adulthood cognitive performance is unknown. This study investigated the association between PA from childhood to adulthood and midlife cognitive performance. Methods: This study is a part of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study. Since 1980, a population-based cohort of 3596 children (age, 3–18 yr) have been followed up in 3- to 9-yr intervals. PA has been queried in all study phases. Cumulative PA was determined in childhood (age, 6–12 yr), adolescence (age, 12–18 yr), young adulthood (age, 18–24 yr), and adulthood (age, 24–37…
