Misdiagnosis and pitfalls in Panayiotopoulos syndrome

2019

Abstract Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS) is a frequent (6% among children of 1–15 years) and benign epileptic syndrome, characterized by predominantly autonomic symptoms (emesis, pallor, flushing, cyanosis, mydriasis/miosis, cardiorespiratory and thermoregulatory alterations, incontinence of urine and/or feces, hypersalivation, and modifications of intestinal motility) associated with simple motor focal seizures, which can be followed by secondary generalization. Panayiotopoulos syndrome can be extremely insidious, because it can mimic several condition, such as gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, encephalitis, syncope, migraine, sleep disorders, or even metabolic diseases. This…

Immediate post-extraction implants placed in acute periapical infected sites with immediate prosthetic provisionalization : a 1-year prospective coho…

2020

Background Few studies have reported the outcomes of immediate placement at infected post-extraction sites. The aim of this study was to compare clinical and radiological outcomes of immediately placed implants with immediate prosthetic provisionalization in sockets with or without acute periapical pathology. Material and Methods A total of 100 patients with immediately placed implants with immediate provisionalization and 1- year of follow up were included (50 patients with acute periapical pathology and a control group of 50 patients without acute periapical pathology). Clinical parameters (bleeding on probing, buccal keratinized mucosa width, clinical recession, and probing depth) and ra…

Reversible graft versus host reaction as cause of erythrophagic splenomegaly in a child?

1977

The case history of a 9 months old infant with hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopnaenia and disturbances of clotting and cellular immune reactivity is reported. The spleen was removed and showed striking erythrophagocytosis by proliferating histiocytes, typical of "familial erythrophagocytic reticulosis" (Farquhar). A graft-versus-host reaction is discussed as a possible underlying cause. The favourable clinical course and full recovery point to an interrelation with primary hypersplenism.

Costimulatory signalling potential of murine MHC class II‐positive T‐clone cells

1996

Activated human and rat T cells as well as mouse T-cell clones have been reported to synthesize and express major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules. However, the capacity of class II+ antigen (Ag) presenting T cells to induce proliferation of Ag-specific cloned T cells has been controversial. We analysed whether the failure of some T-cell clones to proliferate in response to Ag presented by class II+ T cells is because of a lack of costimulatory cytokine production by the antigen-presenting cells (APC). As a model system the mouse class II+ cloned BI/O4.1 T cells were used as APC in order to activate the T cell clone KIII5. This T-helper 1 (Th1) type, GAT (synthetic copoly…

Effects of Dextran Sulfate 500 on Cell-Mediated Resistance to Infection with Listeria monocytogenes in Mice.

1974

Injection of dextran sulfate 500 caused loss of antibacterial resistance. Mice became more susceptible to an infection with Listeria monocytogenes and were unable to develop antilisterial immunity after both active and passive immunization with passively administered spleen cells from Listeria -immune donors. Indirect evidence suggests that the phagocytic component of cell-mediated resistance to bacterial infection is the site of attack of dextran sulfate.

The Humoral Response in TCR α-/-Mice. Can γδ-T Cells Support the Humoral Immune Response?

2002

An optimal humoral response requires T-cell help; however, it has been questioned if this help comes exclusively from alphabeta-T cells or whether gammadelta-T cells also contribute. We have attempted to answer this question by studying the humoral response in T-cell receptor alpha-chain knockout (alpha-/-) mice, which lack the alphabetaT cell subset. Two model antigens were used to characterize the response: the thymus-independent (TI) antigen native dextran B512 (Dx), and the thymus-dependent (TD) antigen heat shock protein (HSP65) from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When challenged with Dx, the alpha-/- mice elicited a strong antibody response and formed rudimentary germinal centres (GCs), …

Cell surface display of rat invariant γ chain: detection by monoclonal antibodies directed against a C-terminal γ chain segment

1992

A series of 14 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) directed against the C-terminal part of the rat invariant gamma chain (amino acid 142-216) was generated using distinct fusion proteins that contain this gamma segment for immunization and hybridoma screening. Additional fusion protein were prepared carrying discrete regions of the gamma chain. Employing these reagents confirmed that the obtained mAb do indeed recognize the C-terminal portion of the invariant chain, as demonstrated by Western blot analysis. All mAb established recognize epitopes present on the native gamma chain, as revealed by immunoprecipitation analysis using nonionic detergent extracts of metabolically labeled Lewis rat splenoc…

Zirconium dioxide implants as an alternative to titanium: A systematic review

2020

Background: This systematic review evaluates the available scientific literature to demonstrate the aesthetic and clinical benefits and to determine the survival and the success of zirconium dioxide implants concerning titanium implants. Material and Methods: The electronic databases were searched until January 2020. Outcome measures were pink aesthetic score (PAS), white aesthetic score (WAS), bleeding on probing (BOP) and probing depth (PD). The addressed PICO question was: In partially edentulous patients in the upper-anterior sector, do zirconium dioxide implants provide aesthetic benefits over conventional titanium implants? Results: In the 15 articles included after the screening were…
