A Look at Valencia’s Elections of the 28th of April and the 26th of May 2019
2020
This paper analyses the main features of the Valencian media coverage of the elections held in Spain in the Spring of 2019 (General, Regional, Municipal, and European elections). We shine a spotlight on the key themes covered by the main newspapers, radio and TV stations, and on the campaign strategies parties used to define ideological blocs on the left and right.
Voting Transitions in the 2019 Valencian Autonomous Community’s Elections
2020
The political fragmentation following the 2008 Financial Crisis and its economic, social, political and institutional fall-out have led to a growing left-right polarisation of politics and a weakening of the middle ground. The effective number of parliamentary parties is at an all-time high both inthe Spanish Parliament (Congreso) and in the Valencian Autonomous Parliament (Corts). Voters are spoilt for choice and switch party more often. This paper uses transfer matrices to analyse the shifting voting patterns in the European, General, Regional, and Local elections held during 2019 in The Valencian Country. The most salient result is the ever-shifting pattern at each end of the political s…
Efficacy and safety study of an eyelid gel after repeated nocturnal application in healthy contact lens users and non-users
2020
Purpose: To evaluate skin biocompatibility of a nighttime hydrating eyelid gel and possible ocular surface effects in contact lens users (CLU) and non-contact lens users (NCLU). The formulation is registered as a medical device as Tridocosahexaenoine-AOX® (TDHA-AOX) (a concentrated DHA triglyceride), containing also hyaluronic acid (HA). Methods: A prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial was performed with 62 participants of both sexes, aged 20–70 years, split into: (1) CLU (n = 30) and (2) NCLU (n = 32). All participants were instructed to apply a single dose of the moisturizing gel (containing TDHA-AOX and HA) nightly to the upper and inner eyelids of their right eye (RE) only, and…

Objective, Noninvasive Evaluation of Velopharyngeal Function in Cleft and Noncleft Patients
1998
Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate a new diagnostic method that provides an approach to noninvasive, objective measurement of velopharyngeal movement by acoustic determination of epipharyngeal volume changes with velopharyngeal muscle function. Design This was a case control study, using consecutive samples. Setting This study took place at the Cleft Palate Rehabilitation Center of the University of Mainz, Germany. Patients Subjects were 29 consecutive cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients and 31 controls (21 patients with dysgnathia and 10 healthy volunteers). Intervention A series of transnasal acoustic measurements (pressure wave: 55 dB for 2 milliseconds) of epipharyng…
On the cardinality of almost discretely Lindelof spaces
2016
A space is said to be almost discretely Lindelof if every discrete subset can be covered by a Lindelof subspace. Juhasz et al. (Weakly linearly Lindelof monotonically normal spaces are Lindelof, preprint, arXiv:1610.04506 ) asked whether every almost discretely Lindelof first-countable Hausdorff space has cardinality at most continuum. We prove that this is the case under $$2^{<{\mathfrak {c}}}={\mathfrak {c}}$$ (which is a consequence of Martin’s Axiom, for example) and for Urysohn spaces in ZFC, thus improving a result by Juhasz et al. (First-countable and almost discretely Lindelof $$T_3$$ spaces have cardinality at most continuum, preprint, arXiv:1612.06651 ). We conclude with a few rel…
Clinical Case: A 42-year-old man presented with ptosis and mios…
Pathophysiology of anthracycline cardiotoxicity.
2016
Anthracyclines (ANTs) are powerful drugs that have reduced the mortality of cancer patients. However, their use is limited by the development of cardiotoxicity (CTX), which is dose dependent and may lead to left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure. Although various strategies have been suggested to reduce the negative effects of ANTs, CTX is still an important unresolved clinical issue. This may be due at least partly to the incomplete characterization of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of ANT-induced CTX. In addition, although various forms of cardiac damage have been demonstrated with the use of these drugs in experimental studies, it is not yet clear how these translate to th…
Revisiting the left convexity hypothesis: changes in the mental apparatus after left dorso-medial prefrontal damage
2016
It has been 15 years since Kaplan-Solms and Solms published their Clinical Studies in Neuropsychoanalysis, where they proposed a neuroanatomy of the mental apparatus. One of their main observations was that damage to certain areas of the left prefrontal cortex (PFC), particularly those related to expressive language (Broca’s area), did not generate changes in the mental apparatus. However, a limitation of their model was that it did not include patients with damage to other areas of the left PFC. The main goal of this paper is to update Kaplan-Solms and Solms’ model through the description of id, ego and superego changes in a case of left dorso-medial prefrontal damage (Professor F). Data f…
Early childhood education and care for Tibetan children in the People's Republic of China: Left behind or led from behind?
2015
Early Childhood Education and Care provision has been expanded in the People’s Republic of China over the last decades. For this expansion to harmonize with young children’s rights, special measures should ensure that the system of provision guarantees the participation and inclusion of the most vulnerable citizens. With this as a focus, this article reviews and discusses the state of Early Childhood Education and Care provision for young children of Tibetan ethnicity in People’s Republic of China. The available literature and ongoing measures and plans are explored around this topic in order to identify the main issues.
