On the discursive construction of a socially responsible organization
2009
Summary Drawing upon critical discourse analysis, this article investigates how a newspaper organization is discursively legitimized as a socially responsible organization. The empirical data are based on 16 interviews conducted among the employees of a newspaper organization. The study has two main implications. First, I suggest that corporate social responsibility in a newspaper organization is constructed around a discursive struggle concerning the role and goals of the newspaper business. More importantly, such debate includes a discursive struggle between professional, social and economic claims. This study further contributes to the literature concerning discursive legitimation strate…
Environmental activism as counter-hegemony? A comparative critical discourse analysis of self-representations of radical environmental organisations
2021
Działalność organizacji ekologicznych wiąże się z odrzucaniem zapewnień o wystarczających działaniach ochronnych i kwestionowaniem dominujących praktyk kulturowych.
2019
This research aims to focus the attention on the concept of "legitimation lie" in order to break the silence surrounding it and to shed light on an organizational phenomenon that is not as rare as what we could believe. Specifically, it provides an explanation of how some entrepreneurs succeed in acquiring initial legitimacy for their small and new businesses through lies. The study of the antithetical association of legitimacy and lies led us to focus on two research axes: on the one hand, the ethical considerations attributed to legitimacy lies and on the other hand, the process of their realization. On the theoretical level, our study required a reassessment of classical moral approaches,…
The Legitimacy Crisis: An Introduction
2020
This section examines how the crisis of democratic legitimacy shapes the prospects for further integration. All the authors find evidence for ‘muddling through’ by the EU in response to its legitimacy crisis. Raube and Costa Reis show how the Commission and European Parliament took incremental steps of starting infringement proceedings against Hungary and Poland in response to breaches in the rule of law by elected populist governments, yet partisanship undermined the EU’s response. Holst and Molander discuss the democratic pitfalls of technocratic decision-making in response to crisis and detail the kinds of reforms needed to enhance accountability and citizen nonexpert participation in po…
Isomorphisms Between Financial and Sustainability Accounting Some Introductory Notes
2020
Sustainability accounting (SA from now on) could be defined in a sense as the ‘armed arm’ of Corporate Social Responsibility. Without an agreed SA, CSR seems not being able to go beyond rhetoric [Owen and Swift (Business Ethics 10:4–8, 2001)] and ideology for legitimacy [Guthrie and Parker (Accounting and Business Research 19:343–352, 2012)], resulting simply on involvement of stakeholders into the concerns, profit or non-profit they are, but not being able to measure the extent and outcomes of this involvement. Our work is shared into four main following sections, out of a conclusive one. The second one will deal with the process of normativisation, with particular concern to sustainabilit…
Equal Pay for a Green Future
2020
In the present chapter, challenges to our growth-driven political-economic model are identified—including lethal economic inequality, growing unrest, technological unemployment in an era of robotization and artificial intelligence (AI), and limits to growth at a time of environmental and climatic collapse. The author is hesitant to offer a “yes” or “no” answer to the question of equal pay, suggesting instead that the answer hinges on time and context. In a future world of limited material resources, where jobs are increasingly automated and substituted by AI algorithms, the legitimacy of inequality-producing incentives for the main exploiters of resources and robots will erode. At a time wh…
Globalization and Political Legitimacy in Western Europe
2018
Is there a legitimacy crisis in contemporary democracies? This question, asked since the beginning of the 1970s, has been currently undergoing a revival (Kriesi in Politische Vierteljahresschrift 54:609–638, 2013; Fuchs and Escher in The Legitimacy of Regional Integration in Europe and the Americas. State, Politics and the Legitimacy of Religious Peacebuilders
2016
In this chapter, Steen-Johnsen shows how the failure of religious leaders to challenge the political strategies of the Ethiopian regime affects their legitimacy as spokespersons for peace. Steen-Johnsen shows how this makes the religious leaders appear as accomplices of the state among groups that they try to address with their message of peace. Steen-Johnsen acknowledges that conflicts which appear religious almost always have political dimensions. She shows how retorting to toothless messages of coexistence and appearing alongside government officials, the Ethiopian religious leaders lose legitimacy as spokespersons for peace. Steen-Johnsen suggests considering how relationships between s…
