Summary The infraorder Lemuriformes is characterized by a high level of homoplasy that clouds the evolutionary signal. The analysis of the morphological disparity of the Malagasy primates' crania and mandibles demonstrates the high determinism of functional specializations and developmental constraints, regardless of the phylogeny. In the present work, the weight of functional constraints linked to diet — a putative source of homoplasy — is analyzed first at the level of the infraorder Lemuriformes as a whole, and secondly at the level of a single family, the Cheirogaleidae, chosen because it contains taxa with two different diets (omnivory and gummivory). This paper presents phonetic-phonological variation in articulatory and perceptual terms, both at segmental and suprasegmental levels. It also presents the determining factors of linguistic diversity and change, that is, the factors responsible for the external, geographical (intra-dialectal and inter-dialectal), chronolectal, social and functional variation of a language. Several examples of a few relevant phenomena of the Northwestern phonetics in Lleida are included, especially the phenomenon of vocalism as seen from the relation between internal and external variation of a language.

A partir de l’aportació de 1953 de Samuel Gili i Gaya sobre el mossàrab de Lleida, ha estat acceptat com un lloc comú de la filologia catalana que el romanç andalusí lleidatà coetani de la conquesta comtal (1149) tenia característiques afins al català nouvingut. Tant la poca consistència de la documentació aportada com les dades fornides pels historiadors rebaixen aquest lloc comú a mera hipòtesi de treball sobre la filiació d’una varietat lingüística amb tota probabilitat extinta abans del segle XII.
