Extravascular Lung Water Does Not Increase in Hypovolemic Patients after a Fluid-Loading Protocol Guided by the Stroke Volume Variation

2012

Introduction. Circulatory failure secondary to hypovolemia is a common situation in critical care patients. Volume replacement is the first option for the treatment of hypovolemia. A possible complication of volume loading is pulmonary edema, quantified at the bedside by the measurement of extravascular lung water index (ELWI). ELWI predicts progression to acute lung injury (ALI) in patients with risk factors for developing it. The aim of this study was to assess whether fluid loading guided by the stroke volume variation (SVV), in patients presumed to be hypovolemic, increased ELWI or not.Methods. Prospective study of 17 consecutive postoperative, fully mechanically ventilated patients dia…

The effects of histamine on the isolated mouse uterus

2000

1. A study is made of the contractile and relaxant effects, and mechanism of action, of histamine on isolated uterus from mice treated with diethylstilboestrol, employing acetylcholine and adrenaline as contractile and relaxant standard agents. 2. Concentration-response curves for histamine agonists were obtained in the absence and presence of selective histaminergic blocking drugs (clemizole, ranitidine and thioperamide) and indomethacin. A number of experiments were carried out in uterus from reserpinised mice. Concentration-response curves for acetylcholine and adrenaline were also obtained in the absence and presence of their selective antagonist (atropine and propranolol). 3. In isolat…

One-year atorvastatin treatment in hypercholesterolemic patients with or without carotid artery disease.

2006

Aim. Statins are the drugs of choice in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), which has a high risk of premature cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction, stroke, and surgical revascularization. Methods. A 1-year open-label study was conducted to test the efficacy and tolerability of Atorvastatin titrated to the target, in proven FH patients and to evaluate certain inflammatory parameters. One hundred and two FH patients (44 men and 58 women; mean age 58.7±3.6 years) were included in the study. After evaluation using the B-mode duplex scanning system of extracranial carotid arteries, the patients were divided into groups: Group 1 (15 men, 25 women) with carotid plaqu…

Measuring the ‘Bridging’ versus ‘Bonding’ Nature of Social Networks: A Proposal for Integrating Existing Measures

2010

Recent research illustrates that two distinct interpretations and operationalizations of ‘bridging’ and ‘bonding’ social networks co-exist in the literature (based on links between diverse networks or between socio-economic groups within a given network, respectively), and that these do not coincide in empirical applications. The present contribution first confirms this conclusion using data from the United Kingdom. Then, we suggest a simple way to integrate both existing approaches into a more general measure of bridging and bonding. Applying this more general index to UK and Flemish data, a) provides stronger empirical support for the idea that memberships in bridging groups are more str…

Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and their remnants: metabolic insights, role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and emerging therapeutic strat…

2021

Abstract Recent advances in human genetics, together with a large body of epidemiologic, preclinical, and clinical trial results, provide strong support for a causal association between triglycerides (TG), TG-rich lipoproteins (TRL), and TRL remnants, and increased risk of myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke, and aortic valve stenosis. These data also indicate that TRL and their remnants may contribute significantly to residual cardiovascular risk in patients on optimized low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-lowering therapy. This statement critically appraises current understanding of the structure, function, and metabolism of TRL, and their pathophysiological role in atherosclerotic cardiova…

Hemodynamic Parameters Change Earlier Than Tissue Oxygen Tension in Hemorrhage

2010

BACKGROUND: Untreated hypovolemia results in impaired outcome. This study tests our hypothesis whether general hemodynamic parameters detect acute blood loss earlier than monitoring parameters of regional tissue beds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight pigs (23-25 kg) were anesthetized and mechanically ventilated. A pulmonary artery catheter and an arterial catheter were inserted. Tissue oxygen tension was measured with Clark-type electrodes in the jejunal and colonic wall, in the liver, and subcutaneously. Jejunal microcirculation was assessed by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Intravascular volume was optimized using difference in pulse pressure (dPP) to keep dPP below 13%. Sixty minutes after p…

Ģimenes anamnēzes raksturojums pacientiem ar primāru hiperlipidēmiju

2018

Polyvascular subclinical atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia: The role of cholesterol burden and gender

2019

International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIM:Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disease characterized by a heterogeneous phenotype. The assessment of cardiovascular (CV) risk is challenging for HeFH. Cholesterol burden (CB) allows to estimate the lifelong exposure to high levels of cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of subclinical atherosclerosis and the relationship between atherosclerosis and the CB in a sample of HeFH patients, focusing on sex-related differences.METHODS AND RESULTS:154 asymptomatic HeFH subjects underwent coronary-artery-calcium score (CACs) and Doppler ultrasound of carotid and femoral arteries. Yearly lipid pro…

Carotid atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic patients: Relationship with cardiovascular events

2001

Background and Aim: Extracranial cerebrovascular atherosclerosis is a common feature of hypercholesterolemia and carotid lesions are good predictors of cardiovascular events in the general population. Factors associated with the carotid damage of hypercholesterolemic patients and their relationships with the occurrence of clinical events are investigated in this study. Methods and Results: One hundred and seventeen cardiovascular event-free hypercholesterolemic subjects underwent a complete clinical examination to look for additional risk factors. A blood sample was collected for lipoprotein determination and an ultrasound high resolution B-mode imaging examination of the common carotid art…

Control of spasticity in a multiple sclerosis model using central nervous system-excluded CB1 cannabinoid receptor agonists

2014

The purpose of this study was the generation of central nervous system (CNS)-excluded cannabinoid receptor agonists to test the hypothesis that inhibition of spasticity, due to CNS autoimmunity, could be controlled by affecting neurotransmission within the periphery. Procedures included identification of chemicals and modeling to predict the mode of exclusion; induction and control of spasticity in the ABH mouse model of multiple sclerosis; conditional deletion of CB1 receptor in peripheral nerves; side-effect profiling to demonstrate the mechanism of CNS-exclusion via drug pumps; genome-wide association study in N2(129×ABH) backcross to map polymorphic cannabinoid drug pump; and sequencing…
