Abstract Background Bipolar disorder (BD) patients experience altered emotional states and deficits in social adaptation that may also be involved in deontological moral judgments in which participants have to choose whether to sacrifice one person in order to save the lives of a greater number. Methods In the present study we compared the utilitarian responses of BD patients in their different states (euthymia, mania, depression) and healthy controls to moral dilemmas with low (impersonal dilemma) and high (personal dilemma) emotional saliency. Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is considered one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, comprising dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and inclusion body myositis. The heterogeneous group of necrotizing myopathies shows a varying amount of necrotic muscle fibers, myophagocytosis, and a sparse inflammatory infiltrate. The underlying immune response in necrotizing myopathy has not yet been addressed in detail. Affected muscle tissue, obtained from 16 patients with IMNM, was analyzed compared with eight non-IMNM (nIMNM) tissues. It has been shown that intensive eccentric muscle actions lead to prolonged loss of muscle force and sarcolemmal damage. This may lead to a reduction in the excitability of the sarcolemma and contribute to the functional deficit. Experiments were carried out to test sarcolemmal excitability after eccentric elbow flexor exercise in humans. Electrically elicited surface compound muscle action potential (M-wave) properties from 30s stimulation trains (20Hz) were analyzed in biceps brachii muscle immediately after, 1h and 48h after the exercise. There is evidence that muscle fibers in denervating disorders and muscular dystrophies undergo apoptosis. In 21 patients with autoimmune inflammatory myopathies, we found no features of muscle fiber apoptosis such as DNA fragmentation or expression of apoptosis-related proteins. However, muscle fibers in myositis displayed distinct up-regulation of inducible and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS). While inducible NOS was distinctly up-regulated on the sarcolemma of all kinds of muscle fibers neuronal NOS displayed increased expression in the sarcoplasm of damaged as well as atrophic muscle fibers. This paper looks at peer review as a cooperation dilemma through a game-theory framework. We built an agent-based model to estimate how much the quality of peer review is influenced by different resource allocation strategies followed by scientists dealing with multiple tasks, i.e., publishing and reviewing. We assumed that scientists were sensitive to acceptance or rejection of their manuscripts and the fairness of peer review to which they were exposed before reviewing. We describe a Windows program that enables users to obtain a broad range of statistics concerning the properties of word and nonword stimuli in an agglutinative language (Basque), including measures of word frequency (at the whole-word and lemma levels), bigram and biphone frequency, orthographic similarity, orthographic and phonological structure, and syllable-based measures. It is designed for use by researchers in psycholinguistics, particularly those concerned with recognition of isolated words and morphology. Forcing for First-Order Languages from the Perspective of Rasiowa–Sikorski Lemma

The paper is concerned with the problem of building models for first-order languages from the perspective of the classic paper of Rasiowa and Sikorski [9]. The central idea, developed in this paper, consists in constructing first-order models from individual variables. The key notion of a Rasiowa–Sikorski set of formulas for an arbitrary countable language L is examined. Each Rasiowa–Sikorski set defines a countable model for L . Conversely, every countable model for L is determined by a Rasiowa–Sikorski set. The focus is on constructing Rasiowa–Sikorski sets by applying forcing techniques restricted to Boolean algebras arising from the subsets of the set of atomic formulas of L .
