Ecotest device for estimation of environmental fate of chemicals in the laboratory
1995
Abstract A glass vessel device with water volume of 20 L was constructed for fast testing of the fate of a chemical in freshwater watercourse environment. The dynamic system consisted of natural water with throughflow, of 4.5 mL min−1 and bottom sediment from a clean oligohumic lake in Central Finland. Duckweed (Lemna sp.) as plant material, lake mussel (Anodonta piscinalis) and crucian carp (Carassius carassius) as test animals were included in the test device. Tetrachloroguaiacol (TeCG) was dissolved at start to water to make 2 μg L−1 concentration. The same concentration of TeCG was maintained in inflow water. After static and dynamic pre-tests, a dynamic four weeks test at 15°C was run …
First Nearctic Record of Hydrellia albilabris (Meigen) (Diptera: Ephydridae), a Leafminer of Duckweed (Araceae: Lemnoideae), with Comments on Related…
2019
Hydrellia albilabris (Meigen) (Diptera: Ephydridae) is recorded in the Nearctic Region for the first time. Its biology and immature stages are documented, and other miners in duckweeds (Araceae: Lemnoideae) are discussed. One new combination is proposed: Hydrellia jinpingensis (Zhang, Yang, and Hayashi) is transferred from Cavatorella.
Evaluation of Arsenate- and Vanadate-Associated Changes of Electrical Membrane Potential and Phosphate Transport inLemna gibbaG1
1989
Interference of arsenate and vanadate with phosphate uptake in Lemna gibba L. was studied by measuring voltage changes and (32P)phosphate uptake. Arsenate proved to be competitive with the highand low-affinity phosphate uptake system. It induced transient membrane potential changes of up to 120 mV which were similar to those induced by phosphate and indicated a cotransport mechanism with at least 2H+/H2As04. The amplitude of the transient arsenate-induced membrane depolarization was strongly influenced by phosphate starvation. A permanent membrane depolarization to the diffusion potential was achieved within 2 to 6 h in P-starved plants. Thus, arsenate is indeed a strongly competitive physi…
Uptake of Acidic and Basic Sugar Derivatives in Lemna gibba G1
1989
The uptake of acidic and basic sugar derivatives in Lemna gibba L. was studied. Uronic acids applied to the experimental solution (50 millimolar) induced a small decrease of the membrane potential (10 +/- 1 millivolt galacturonic acid, and 20 +/- 4 millivolt glucuronic acid). After incubation of the plants in a 0.1 millimolar solution of these substrates, no decrease in the concentration of reducing groups in the external solution was detected. Respiration increased by 31% with 50 millimolar galacturonic acid, whereas no effect was found with the same concentration of glucuronic acid. Glucosamine caused a considerable concentration-dependent membrane depolarization. ((14)C)glucosamine uptak…
Primo reperto di una lenticchia d'acqua alloctona in Sicilia: Lemna minuta KUNTH (Araceae Lemnoideae)
2011
Lemna minuta, an allochthonous duckweed from North A…
