On the compatibilization of PET/HDPE blends through a new class of copolyesters

2000

Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polyethylene are incompatible polymers and their blends show, in general, poor properties. Compatibilization is then a necessary step to obtain blends with good mechanical and barrier properties. In this work different compatibilizing agents were used, i.e. a maleic anhydride elastomer and some new products containing graft-copolymers having polyester segments grafted onto polyethylene backbone chains. Both the functionalized elastomer and the new products drastically improve the morphology and the ductility of the blend. In the case of the modified elastomer the compatibilizing action has been attributed to the formation of H-bonds whereas the copolymers…

Amino acid-based cholinium ionic liquids as sustainable catalysts for pet depolymerization

2021

Chemical recycling to monomers is one of the key strategies in tackling the issues deriving from persistent plastic pollution in the environment, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is among the most used polymers in modern society. In this context, we herein describe the glycolysis of PET to bis-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET), promoted by basic cholinium salts differing for the anions, also comprising amino acid anions. We investigated the optimal reaction conditions, finding that the best-performing catalyst is [Ch][Gly], in the presence of which a conversion of 85% and a yield of 51% are achieved at 150 °C after 6 h, from PET deriving from a clear water bottle. We used our protocol…

New conducting radical salts based upon Keggin-type polyoxometalates and perylene

2004

Three new radical salts, Per6[PMo12O40]·CH2Cl2 (1), Per6[PMo12O40]·CH3CN (2), and Per9(NBu4)4[SiW12O40]2 (3) (Per = perylene), have been synthesised and their electrical and magnetic properties characterised. These three salts are diamagnetic and they behave as semiconductors with room temperature conductivities of 69, 3.6 and 0.85 S cm−1. While salt 2 presents hole-type conduction and 3 exhibits electron-dominated electrical transport properties, salt 1 shows at 150 K an abrupt change in the thermal dependence of the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient suggesting a phase transition.

Research on the Diurnal Courses of Abscissic Acid, 1-Aminocyclopropane Carboxylic Acid and Its Malonyl Conjugate Contents in Needles of Damaged and U…

1993

Ethylene regulates many aspects of plant growth, development and senescence. The immediate precursor of ethylene was identified as 1-aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC) [7]. Amrhein et al. [1] discovered that ACC supplied exogenously was efficiently converted into ACC malonyl conjugate (MACC) along with ethylene production.

Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes in ambient air and Pinus sylvestris L. needles: a comparative study between Belgium, Hungary and Latvia

2001

Abstract Concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTEX) in ambient air and in 1 yr old Pinus sylvestris pine needles were monitored along a busy road, petrol station and rural area of Belgium, Hungary and Latvia in a 1 yr period. To test P. sylvestris as a possible biomonitor for the BTEX concentrations, samples were taken in the four seasons. As the distribution of data was not normal, the level of pollution on different sites and seasons was compared and evaluated by non-parametric tests. The measured air concentrations did not differ significantly from one season to another throughout the year. There were, however, differences between sampling places. The C2-alkylbe…

Thermodynamics of Aqueous Poly(ethylene oxide)−Poly(propylene oxide)−Poly(ethylene oxide)/Surfactant Mixtures. Effect of the Copolymer Molecular Weig…

2004

A calorimetric study was performed to focus attention on the interactions between copolymers and anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Three aspects were analyzed: (1) the hydrophobicity of the surfactant, (2) the change of the copolymer molecular weight, and (3) the nature of the hydrophilicity of the copolymer. To this purpose, the family of sodium alkanoates (sodium octanoate through sodium dodecanoate) and the triblock copolymers EO76PO 29EO76 (F68), EO103PO39EO 103 and EO132PO50EO132 were investigated. Comparing F68 and EO13PO30EO13 (L64), previously studied by us, provided information on the effect of the copolymer hydrophilicity. The experimental data were analyzed by means of a …

Hyperbranched Poly(propylene oxide): A Multifunctional Backbone-Thermoresponsive Polyether Polyol Copolymer

2012

Backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched poly(propylene oxide)-based polyether polyols have been synthesized by anionic ring-opening copolymerization of glycidol and propylene oxide. The number of functional hydroxyl end groups and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) can be readily adjusted by varying the comonomer ratio. Molecular weights in the range of 1200-2000 g/mol were achieved. Hyperbranched polyether polyols with LCST values between 24 and 83 °C can be obtained in a convenient one-step reaction.

Organic/inorganic molecular conductors based upon perylene and Lindquist-type polyoxometalates

2001

The preparation, structures and physical properties of the organic/inorganic radical salts based upon perylene (per) and Lindquist type polyoxometalates (POMs) are reported. Three new hybrid salts have been prepared: (per)5[Mo6O19] (1), (per)5[W6O19] (2), and (per)5[VW5O19] (3). Only structures 1 (P, Z = 2) and 3 (P, Z = 2) were fully determined as compound 2 was found to have unit cell parameters practically identical to 1 and, therefore, is considered isostructural with the latter. The structures consist of interpenetrated organic and mixed organic/inorganic layers in the ac plane alternating along the a direction. The organic layers present a novel packing mode of the perylene molecules …

The degradation reactions of polyesters of ad…

Calculation of vapor pressures not requiring the derivatives of the energy of mixing

1997

A method is presented for the calculation of vapor pressures exclusively on the basis of the energy of mixing, the knowledge of chemical potentials is not required. The only condition used for the calculation is the minimum of the energy of mixing of the overall system in equilibrium. The gas phase is treated as an ideal gas, for the liquid phase no specific thermodynamic description is assumed. The method is demonstrated for a mixture of two solvents and one polymer. The system water/poly(ethylene oxide), the thermodynamics of which are described by an equation that can only be solved numerically thus impeding the calculation of chemical potentials, serves as an example. Interaction parame…
