Dispersion of titanate nanotubes for nanomedicine: comparison of PEI and PEG nanohybrids.

In the present study, we report the dispersion of titanate nanotubes (TiONts) via polymer grafting (PolyEthylene Glycol, PEG) or polymer adsorption (polyethylene imine, PEI) where different TiONts/polymer ratios have been investigated. The TiONts/PEI and TiONts/PEG nanohybrids were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as by zeta potential measurements in order to determine both their dispersion state and stability in water (at different pH for zetametry). Thermomechanical Properties of Radiation-Modified Polyethylene/Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Copolymer/Liquid-Crystalline Copolyester Blends

Radiation-modified blends of high-density polyethylene (PE) with ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM; 10-65 wt.%) and thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP; 10 wt.%) were investigated. The LCP was a liquid-crystalline copolyester of 40% poly(ethylene terephthalate) with 60% 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The constituents were blended using a circular extruder, the specimens were prepared by compression molding and irradiated by 60Co γ-radiation up to 200 kGy. Effects of organoclay on morphology and properties of nanocomposites based on LDPE/PA-6 blends without and with SEBS-g-MA compatibilizer

LDPE/PA-6 blends (75/25 wt/wt) were added with SEBS-g-MA (S) and/or an organoclay (20A) using different compounding sequences and the morphology and the properties of the blends or composites were investigated. An XRD study of the nanocomposites with pure polymers showed that 20A is intercalated by LDPE or PA-6 chains, whereas it is exfoliated by S if the clay concentration does not exceed 10 wt%. The SEM investigation showed that both S and 20A behave as efficient emulsifying agents for the LDPE/PA-6 blends. Abstract The role of the trifluoromethyl group in reactivity, regio-, and stereoselectivity in cycloaddition reactions has been analyzed by studying the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (13DC) reactions of nitrone 4 with 3,3,3-trifluoro-1-nitropropene 7b and 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-nitropropene 14 using density functional theory (DFT) methods at the B3LYP/6-311G(d) level. Characterization of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) modified by ion implantation

Abstract Surface modification of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is induced by ion implantation of different ions at 300 keV energy. The aim of this work was the chemical, physical and mechanical characterization of the modified material in order to know deep inside about the effect of the ion beam upon the polymer. The irradiated surfaces are investigated by Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption and micro-hardness analysis, scanning electron microscopy. Studies on electron-beam irradiation and plastic deformation of medical-grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene

Abstract Separated and combined electron-beam irradiation and plastic deformation effects on the structures of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were studied. It was found that the concentration of carbonyl (ketones, esters and peresters), hydroxyl and vinyl groups increases with the growing dose of adsorbed electrons. It also tends to exhibit a slight increase in the melting point and crystallinity of the samples. A mechanical stress in the polymer was found to accelerate radiation-induced degradation. A theoretical determination of the electronic spectrum of Methylenecyclopropene

The vertical electronic spectrum of methylenecyclopropene, the prototype of the nonalternant hydrocarbons known as fulvenes, has been studied using multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory. The calculations comprise three valence states and the 3s, 3p, and 3d members of the Rydberg series converging to the first π ionization limit. Vertical excitation energies to three valence states are found at 4.13, 6.12, and 6.82 eV. The second of them corresponds to an excitation from the highest occupied σ orbital to a π* orbital, while the other two are π → π* excitations. Time-monitoring sensor based on oxygen diffusion in an indicator/polymer matrix

Abstract A time-monitoring sensor based on the oxidation of leuco methylene blue (LMB) to methylene blue (MB) was developed. The sensor changes its color from yellow to green in the presence of oxygen and was integrated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. The diffusion of the oxygen in the polymer matrix as well as the oxygen uptake due to the oxidation reaction determines the time monitoring of the sensor.
