Geminal Parahydrogen-Induced Polarization: Accumulating Long-Lived Singlet Order on Methylene Proton Pairs

2020

Abstract. In the majority of hydrogenative PHIP (Parahydrogen Induced Polarization) experiments, the hydrogen molecule undergoes pairwise cis-addition to an unsaturated precursor to occupy vicinal positions on the product molecule. However, some ruthenium-based hydrogenation catalysts induce geminal hydrogenation, leading to a reaction product in which the twohydrogen atoms are transferred to the same carbon center, forming a methylene (CH2) group. The singlet order of parahydrogen is substantially retained over the geminal hydrogenation reaction, giving rise to a singlet-hyperpolarized CH2 group. Although the T1 relaxation times of the methylene protons are often short, the singlet order h…

AlTf-UVM-7—Highly active catalysts for the synthesis of long chain symmetrical ethers and non-ionic surfactant structures

2010

New Lewis acid AlTf-UVM-7 catalysts with bimodal pore system and different Si to Al ratios were prepared in a two-step synthesis in which triflic acid (Tf) was incorporated into previously synthesized mesoporous aluminum-containing silica. The Al incorporation inside the pore walls was carried out through the Atrane method. The characterization of the resulted catalysts showed that the triflic acid treatment step did not damage the texture or the structure of the catalysts. These materials were used as green catalysts for the etherification of fatty alcohols and the conversion of ethylene glycol (EG) with n-octanol resulting in mixtures of short ethoxylated structures with a large distribut…

One-pot combination of the in-situ generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with selective oxidation reactions enhances the environmental and economic attractiveness of the use of H2O2 as green oxidant at industrial scale. This tandem reaction improves not only the safety aspects associated to H2O2 storage and transportation but also reduces the capital and operation costs. This review covers the progress in the field focussing on the areas of catalysis development, mechanistic understanding and engineering approaches (such as membrane reactors) for specific systems involving epoxidation of propylene oxide, hydroxylation of benzene, oxygenate synthesis from methane and Fenton processes, highl…

Studies of structural composition distribution heterogeneity in ethylene/1-hexene copolymers using thermal fractionation technique (SSA)

2005

Abstract Investigations into the compositional heterogeneity of ethylene/1-hexene copolymers obtained with various zirconocene/MAO catalysts, either homogeneous or supported on inorganic carriers such as a complex of magnesium chloride with tetrahydrofuran or methyl alcohol, were conducted. The dependence between metallocene structure, as well as catalyst immobilization, and the compositional heterogeneity of the related products was investigated. It was found that the heterogeneity of copolymers is determined by the metallocene catalyst structure. The amount of peaks on the DSC thermograms of copolymers and their division increase with the increase of bulkiness of the ligand in the catalyt…

Optical determination and identification of organic shells around nanoparticles: application to silver nanoparticles

2013

We present a simple method to prove the presence of an organic shell around silver nanoparticles. This method is based on the comparison between optical extinction measurements of isolated nanoparticles and Mie calculations predicting the expected wavelength of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of the nanoparticles with and without the presence of an organic layer. This method was applied to silver nanoparticles which seemed to be well protected from oxidation. Further experimental characterization via Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) measurements allowed to identify this protective shell as ethylene glycol. Combining LSPR and SERS measurements could thus give proof of both …

Barrier properties of chitosan coated polyethylene

2012

The transfer properties of chitosan coated polyethylene (PE) films were studied. The barrier properties of non coated PE were not affected by relative humidity changes. The presence of the hydrophilic chitosan layer acted as a water reservoir on the polyethylene film surface which significantly promoted its sensitivity to the water vapour. The water vapour permeability increased 1.85 times at a higher RH. Coated PE films showed more than two-order decrease in the oxygen permeability (PO2) and three-order-decrease in the carbon dioxide permeability (PCO2). When the chitosan coated PE surface was exposed to the water vapour, the PO2 and the PCO2 were significantly increased. However, the perm…

Defective copper transport in the copt5 mutant affects cadmium tolerance.

2014

Cadmium toxicity interferes with essential metal homeostasis, which is a problem for both plant nutrition and the consumption of healthy food by humans. Copper uptake is performed by the members of the Arabidopsis high affinity copper transporter (COPT) family. One of the members, COPT5, is involved in copper recycling from the vacuole toward the cytosolic compartment. We show herein that copt5 mutants are more sensitive to cadmium stress than wild-type plants, as indicated by reduced growth. Exacerbated cadmium toxicity in copt5 mutants is due specifically to altered copper traffic through the COPT5 transporter. Three different processes which have been shown to affect cadmium tolerance ar…

Effect of hydrogen on the ethylene polymerization process over Ziegler-Natta catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2. I. Studies of the chain-transfer rea…

2000

The effect of hydrogen on the molecular weight of polyethylene obtained over vanadium catalysts (based on VCl4 and VOCl3) supported on MgCl2(THF)2 was studied and the results were compared to those obtained for similar titanium catalysts. It was confirmed that the dependencies of the transfer reaction on the hydrogen concentration are a half-order in all investigated systems. However, the transition metal of the catalytic site affects the ratio of the transfer rate with hydrogen to the propagation rate (ktr,H/kp) and the results showed that hydrogen is a more effective agent of polyethylene molecular weight control in vanadium-based systems as compared to the titanium catalyst. © 2000 John …

Tailoring polymers through interplay of ligands within precatalysts: 8-(Nitro/benzhydryl-arylimino)-7,7-dimethyl-5,6-dihydroquinolylnickel halides in…

2017

A series of 8-(nitro/benzhydryl-substituted arylimino)-7,7-dimethyl-5,6-dihydroquinolines and the corresponding nickel halide complexes were synthesized and characterized. Molecular structures of representative nickel complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, showing the dinuclear dimers with distorted square-pyramidal geometry around the nickel center. The binding energies determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate the effective coordination between the sp2-nitrogen and nickel atoms as well as the influence of both the halogen ligands and the substituents within dihydroquinolines on the strength of the NiN bond. Ethylene polymerization with the nicke…

Nature of activating effect of two-step polymerization of propylene

1999

The prepolymerization effect on propylene polymerization in the presence of a TiCl 3 -based catalyst, modified by di-n-buthyl ether, was studied. The influence of prepolymerization on the electron spin resonance spectra and morphology of the catalyst, as well as the properties and the morphology of both prepolymer and regular polymerization products, was investigated. The polymer morphology was evaluated through scanning electron microscopy, polymer bulk density, and particle size distribution. Some evidence of the enhancement effect of prepolymerization on the catalyst activity and stereospecificity was obtained. No influence from prepolymerization was observed on molecular weight and its …
