Fractal square zone plates

2013

[EN] In this paper we present a novel family of zone plates with a fractal distribution of square zones. The focusing properties of these fractal diffractive lenses coined fractal square zone plates are analytically studied and the influence of the fractality is investigated. It is shown that under monochromatic illumination a fractal square zone plate gives rise a focal volume containing a delimited sequence of two-arms-cross pattern that are axially distributed according to the self-similarity of the lens.

Gaussian imaging transformation for the paraxial Debye formulation of the focal region in a low-Fresnel-number optical system

2000

The Debye formulation of focused fields has been systematically used to evaluate, for example, the point-spread function of an optical imaging system. According to this approximation, the focal wave field exhibits some symmetries about the geometrical focus. However, certain discrepancies arise when the Fresnel number, as viewed from focus, is close to unity. In that case, we should use the Kirchhoff formulation to evaluate accurately the three-dimensional amplitude distribution of the field in the focal region. We make some important remarks regarding both diffraction theories. In the end we demonstrate that, in the paraxial regime, given a defocused transverse pattern in the Debye approxi…

Polyadic devil's lenses.

2009

Devil’s lenses (DLs) were recently proposed as a new kind of kinoform lens in which the phase structure is characterized by the “devil’s staircase” function. DLs are considered fractal lenses because they are constructed following the geometry of the triadic Cantor set and because they provide self-similar foci along the optical axis. Here, DLs are generalized allowing the inclusion of polyadic Cantor distributions in their design. The lacunarity of the selected polyadic fractal distribution is an additional design parameter. The results are coined polyadic DLs. Construction requirements and interrelations among the different parameters of these new fractal lenses are also presented. It is …

A/V ratio as predicted by full width at half maximum and by blood vessel tracking in presence of ocular aberrations

2011

Aberrations impact A/V ratio calculated from full width at half maximum. We investigated whether aberrations affect A/V ratio calculated by tracking the vessels. Aberrations changed the A/V ratio. We conclude that aberrations impact A/V ratio.

Lens Effect and CMB Anisotropies: Deviations from Gaussianity

2003

The CMB sky can be seen as the superimposition of two components, one of them is the temperature distribution in the absence of lensing and the other one is the correction caused by lensing. In the model under consideration, the first of these components is Gaussian, but the second is not. Numerical methods to calculate angular correlations in the lens component are designed and tested. Some of these correlations are estimated. Deviations from Gaussianity are confirmed.

GLITP optical monitoring of QSO 0957+561: VR light curves and variability

2003

The GLITP collaboration observed the first gravitational lens system (QSO 0957+561) from 2000 February 3 to 2000 March 31. The daily VR observations were made with the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma (Spain). We have derived detailed and robust VR light curves of the two components Q0957+561A and Q0957+561B. In spite of the excellent sampling rate, we have not found evidence in favor of true daily variability. With respect to variability on time-scales of several weeks, we measure VR gradients of about -0.8 mmag/day in Q0957+561A and + 0.3 mmag/day in Q0957+561B. The gradients are very probably originated in the far source, thus adopting this …

F-GAMMA: On the phenomenological classification of continuum radio spectra variability patterns of Fermi blazars

2012

The F-GAMMA program is a coordinated effort to investigate the physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) via multi-frequency monitoring of Fermi blazars. In the current study we show and discuss the evolution of broad-band radio spectra, which are measured at ten frequencies between 2.64 and 142 GHz using the Effelsberg 100-m and the IRAM 30-m telescopes. It is shown that any of the 78 sources studied can be classified in terms of their variability characteristics in merely 5 types of variability. It is argued that these can be attributed to only two classes of variability mechanisms. The first four types are dominated by spectral evolution and can be described by a simple two-component syst…

Improving on numerical simulations of nonlinear CMB anisotropies

2015

An Adaptative-Particle-Particle-Particle-Mesh code (HYDRA) plus a ray-tracing procedure was used in [1] to perform an exhaustive analysis of the weak lensing anisotropy. Other nonlinear Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, such as the Rees-Sciamaand the Sunyaev-Zel.dovicheffects are also being studied by using the same tools. Here we present some advances in our study of these nonlinear anisotropies. The primary advance is due to the use of better simulations with greater particle densities and appropriate softening, although other parameters have also been adjusted to get better estimates. Thus, we improve on a previous paper [2] where the Rees-Sciamaeffect was studied with Particle-M…

Studying the microlenses mass function from statistical analysis of the caustic concentration

2011

The statistical distribution of caustic crossings by the images of a lensed quasar depends on the properties of the distribution of microlenses in the lens galaxy. We use a procedure based in Inverse Polygon Mapping to easily identify the critical and caustic curves generated by a distribution of stars in the lens galaxy. We analyze the statistical distributions of the number of caustic crossings by a pixel size source for several projected mass densities and different mass distributions. We compare the results of simulations with theoretical binomial distributions. Finally we apply this method to the study of the stellar mass distribution in the lens galaxy of QSO 2237+0305.

Two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with zero Dirichlet boundary condition on a circle: Analytic results for boundary deformation, the transition disk…

2019

A deformation of a disk D of radius r is described as follows: Let two disks D1 and D2 have the same radius r, and let the distance between the two disk centers be 2a, 0 ≤ a ≤ r. The deformation transforms D into the intersection D1 ∩ D2. This deformation is parametrized by e = a/r. For e = 0, there is no deformation, and the deformation starts when e, starting from 0, increases, transforming the disk into a lens. Analytic results are obtained for the eigenvalues of Helmholtz equation with zero Dirichlet boundary condition to the lowest order in e for this deformation. These analytic results are obtained via a Hamiltonian method for solving the Helmholtz equation with zero Dirichlet boundar…
