Future changes in North Atlantic winter cyclones in CESM-LENS. Part I: cyclone intensity, PV anomalies and horizontal wind speed

2021

Abstract. Strong low-level winds associated with extratropical cyclones can cause substantial impacts on society. The wind intensity and the spatial distribution of wind maxima may change in a warming climate; however, the involved changes in cyclone structure and dynamics are unclear. Here, such structural changes of strong North Atlantic cyclones in a warmer climate close to the end of the current century are investigated with storm-relative composites based on Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LENS) simulations. Furthermore, a piecewise potential vorticity inversion is applied to associate such changes in low-level winds to changes in potential vorticity (PV) anomalies at…

Tears as a source of biomarkers for ocular and systemic diseases

2013

The main focus in clinical proteomics is the discovery of new protein or peptide biomarkers which are correlated with a certain disease. Tear proteins have been investigated extensively in the past and distinct relations between the levels of certain tear proteins to different disorders have been demonstrated. In this review we attempt to summarize proteomic technologies for biomarker identification in tears and some disease related biomarkers in tear fluids that were discovered through different proteomic techniques in different conditions like dry eye, Sjogren's syndrome, contact lens wearers, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or cancer. Proteomic analysis of tear fluid has proven to be a pr…

Assessment of a Modified Acoustic Lens for Electromagnetic Shock Wave Lithotripters in a Swine Model

2013

The acoustic lens of the Modularis electromagnetic shock wave lithotripter (Siemens, Malvern, Pennsylvania) was modified to produce a pressure waveform and focal zone more closely resembling that of the original HM3 device (Dornier Medtech, Wessling, Germany). We assessed the newly designed acoustic lens in vivo in an animal model.Stone fragmentation and tissue injury produced by the original and modified lenses of the Modularis lithotripter were evaluated in a swine model under equivalent acoustic pulse energy (about 45 mJ) at 1 Hz pulse repetition frequency. Stone fragmentation was determined by the weight percent of stone fragments less than 2 mm. To assess tissue injury, shock wave trea…

Abstract and concrete tangent modules on Lipschitz differentiability spaces

2020

We construct an isometric embedding from Gigli's abstract tangent module into the concrete tangent module of a space admitting a (weak) Lipschitz differentiable structure, and give two equivalent conditions which characterize when the embedding is an isomorphism. Together with arguments from a recent article by Bate--Kangasniemi--Orponen, this equivalence is used to show that the ${\rm Lip}-{\rm lip}$ -type condition ${\rm lip} f\le C|Df|$ implies the existence of a Lipschitz differentiable structure, and moreover self-improves to ${\rm lip} f =|Df|$. We also provide a direct proof of a result by Gigli and the second author that, for a space with a strongly rectifiable decomposition, Gigli'…

Study of the Extended Narrow‐Line Region in the Host Galaxy of the Lensed QSO 2237+0305 (z= 1.69)

2004

The detection of spatially extended line emission in multiply imaged QSOs offers a new possibility to study the properties (kinematics and structure) of the ionized gas in the host galaxies of high-redshift QSOs. We have studied the arc of extended emission detected in Q2237+0305, finding that it arises from the core of the C III] λ1909 emission line and that the emission in the wings is compact. From the morphology of the emission-line profiles we have identified an additional narrow emission line component affecting the core of the spectra in the region of the arc (around component D). The kinematic analysis shows that the extended narrow-line region (NLR) exhibits broadening similar to t…

Microlensing of a Biconical Broad‐Line Region

2006

The influence of microlensing in the profiles of the emission lines generated in a biconical geometry is discussed. Microlensing amplification in this anisotropic model is not directly related to the bicone's intrinsic size but depends on the orientation of the bicone axis and on the cone aperture. The orientation of the projected bicone with respect to the shear of the magnification pattern can induce very interesting effects, like the quasi-periodic enhancements of the red/blue part of the emission line profile or the lack of correlation between the broad line region (BLR) and continuum light curves of QSOs. The emission line profiles of a BLR moving in a high caustic concentration exhibi…

Diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses: reading performance and quality of life evaluation

2011

ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the reading performance and changes in quality of life after cataract surgery with multifocal diffractive (IOLs) implantation Setting: Section of Ophthalmology - Department of Experimental Biomedicine and Clinical Neuroscience, University of Palermo, Italy; Eye Clinic - Department of Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology, University of Florence, Italy. Methods: 160 Consecutive eyes of cataract patients were divided into two groups. One group (20 patients, 40 eyes) received aspheric monofocal IOLs (Acrysof SN60WF). One group (60 patients, 120 eyes) was implanted with a diffractive aspheric multifocal IOL produced by different manufacturers: 20 patients with Acry…

Quadrature Formula Based on Interpolating Polynomials: Algorithmic and Computational Aspects

2007

The aim of this article is to obtain a quadrature formula for functions in several variables and to analyze the algorithmic and computational aspects of this formula. The known information about the integrand is {λi(f)}i=1n, where λi are linearly independent linear functionals. We find a form of the coefficients of the quadrature formula which can be easy used in numerical calculations. The main algorithm we use in order to obtain the coefficients and the remainder of the quadrature formula is based on the Gauss elimination by segments method. We obtain an expression for the exactness degree of the quadrature formula. Finally, we analyze some computational aspects of the algorithm in the pa…

Quality control in the optical industry: From a work analysis of lens inspection to a training programme, an experimental case study

2007

A cognitive work analysis of quality inspection in the optical industry has been carried out in order to devise a training programme. The task concerned the inspection of high quality human eyeglass lenses. We conducted an experimental investigation of defect detection and acceptability decision-making tasks in 18 experts and novice inspectors. Detection and decision-making were investigated together and separately in two experimental sessions. We showed the effect of expertise on reaction times and errors, and we described the cognitive processes of novice inspectors. On the basis of the processing differences between the two groups, a training programme for new inspectors was devised and …
