The status of the species Pectinatus portalensis Gonzalez et al. 2005. Request for an Opinion

2008

On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and several key phenotypic features, it was ascertained that the cultures cited as the type strain of the species Pectinatus portalensis, CECT 5841(T) and LMG 22865(T), do not conform to the description, [Gonzalez, J. M., Jurado, V., Laiz, L., Zimmerman, J., Hermosin, B.Saiz-Jimenez, C. (2004). Antonie van Leeuwenhoek 86, 241-248]. The type strain does not exist in any other established culture collection or with the authors who described this species. Therefore, it cannot be included in any scientific study. It is proposed that the Judicial Commission place the name Pectinatus portalensis on the list of rejected names if a suitable replacemen…

El procés d'unificació de l'ortografia catalana

1994

The publication of the Normes ortográfiques de l'IEC (1913) and its adoption in the entire linguistic region in 1932 in the Valencian Country with the so-called Normes de Castelló was the result of a process in which differing spelling norms had to be standardized. The author examines in detail the norms used in several popular and dialectic magazines published in Barcelona (La Esquella de la Torratxa), Valencia (El Micalet de Valensia) and Palma de Majorca (En Figuera).

Aspectes sintàctics de l'occità antic comparats amb els del català

2006

The existence of a two cases declension system in medieval Occitan, which lacked in Catalan, was one of the most remarkable differences between both languages. This distinction arises when comparing the homilies from Tortosa, in Occitan, to the ones from Organyà, which are the Catalan translation from Occitan texts.

Presbyopia and the aging eye: Existing refractive approaches and their potential impact on dry eye signs and symptoms.

2020

Every part of the human body is subject to aging, including the eye. Increased prevalence of dry eye disease with age is widely acknowledged: aging threatens ocular surface homeostasis, altering the normal functioning of the lacrimal functional unit and potentially leading to signs and symptoms of dry eye. Parallelly, two additional degenerative processes take place within the crystalline lens, leading to presbyopia and cataractogenesis. With continuously increasing life expectancies both conditions are expected to impact society further. Correction strategies for presbyopia and cataracts either directly or indirectly challenge ocular surface additionally. On one hand, contact lens presbyop…

Connection between temperature, larval production, virulence and geographical distribution of Rhipidocotyle parasites infecting the duck mussel, Anod…

2015

In this thesis, two bucephalid trematode parasites Rhipidocotyle campanula and R. fennica, which use the same first (Anodonta anatina) and second intermediate (Rutilus rutilus) host were studied. The aim was to investigate the effect of temperature on one of the key processes in the transmission of these parasites: 1) the emergence of cercarial larvae from A. anatina over short (1 h) and 2) long (throughout the annual cercarial shedding period, from May to October) time periods as well, as on 3) mussel survival and 4) the seasonal timing of cercarial release. In addition, the aim was to study how the cercarial shedding traits are linked to the 5) geographical occurrence and abundance of the…

Participación política, partidos y nuevos movimientos sociales

2005

Microphthalmia, persistent hyperplastic hyaloid vasculature and lens anomalies following overexpression of VEGF-A188 from the αA-crystallin promoter

2007

Purpose During growth of the embryonic eye, dose- and site-specific expression of heparin-binding growth factors is critical for the formation of an appropriate vascular supply. Overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A188 (VEGF-A188), a strongly heparin-binding, endothelial-specific mitogen, leads to severe disturbance of vascular and overall ocular morphology. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of VEGF-A188 overexpression on growth of ocular tissue components. Methods Stereological and immunohistochemical methods were employed to identify the vascular profiles, ocular tissue proportions, and cell types in VEGF-A188 transgenic mice and compare them with wild-type mice. R…

Evidence of enhanced bacterial invasion during Diplostomum spathaceum infection in European grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.)

2006

Farmed grayling, Thymallus thymallus (L.), are susceptible to atypical Aeromonas salmonicida (aAS) infections. Interactions between bacteria and parasites were studied using grayling subjected to concomitant exposure to aAS bacteria and the digenean parasite Diplostomum spathaceum. Atypical AS was detected from fish by a combination of bacterial cultivation and polymerase chain reaction techniques. A detection level of 17 aAS cells per 100 mg intestine tissue sample was obtained. Concomitant bacterial exposure did not enhance the severity of grayling eye rupture and nuclear extrusion induced by D. spathaceum, but D. spathaceum invasion into grayling increased the proportion of fish carrying…

Channel Capacity in Psychovisual Deep-Nets: Gaussianization Versus Kozachenko-Leonenko

2020

In this work, we quantify how neural networks designed from biology using no statistical training have a remarkable performance in information theoretic terms. Specifically, we address the question of the amount of information that can be extracted about the images from the different layers of psychophysically tuned deep networks. We show that analytical approaches are not possible, and we propose the use of two empirical estimators of capacity: the classical Kozachenko-Lonenko estimator and a recent estimator based on Gaussianization. Results show that networks purely based on visual psychophysics are extremely efficient in two aspects: (1) the internal representation of these networks dup…

Visual acuity with computer simulated and lens-induced astigmatism

2014

[EN] The relationship between spherical and astigmatic refractive errors and their associated visual acuity is investigated in this work by means of two different approaches. In the first one, different refractive errors were induced in normal subjects by trial lenses. In the second one, defocused images were simulated numerically by the optical transfer function of a model eye and then judged by the same subjects. The amount of defocus (measured in terms of the modulus of the dioptric power vector) necessary to reduce the visual acuity to 0.1 logMAR and to 0.4 logMAR was computed with each method and then compared. We found that the visual system is clearly more tolerant to lens-induced de…
