Will the invasive western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Coreidae) seize all of Europe?

2008

In our day, thanks to high-speed transport systems, people are moving living species (intentionally or not) across ecosystems and countless borders. As we know, most introduced species usually do not survive, because they find neither a tolerable environment nor an available ecological niche. Sometimes, successful establishment may also require multiple introductions (Balcom 2004).

Global phylogeography and geographical variation in warning coloration of the wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis)

2015

Aim To investigate the phylogeography of the aposematic wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis) across its Holarctic distribution and to explore how its genetic structure relates to geographical differences in hindwing warning coloration of males and females. Males have polymorphic hindwing coloration, while female hindwing coloration varies continuously, but no geographical analyses of coloration or genetic structure exist. Location The Holarctic. Methods We sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) from 587 specimens. We also examined more current population structure by genotyping 569 specimens at 10 nuclear microsatellite loci. Species distribut…

Investigating the origin of parthenogenesis and ploidy level in Dahlica fennicella (Lepidoptera: Psychidae)

2013

The theories for the predominance of sexual reproduction predict that parthenogens should have no long-term evolutionary potential due to the lack of genetic recombination, despite short term advantages. Although parthenogenesis is rare among high order animals, true parthenogens can be found in various taxa. The intriguing question of the proliferation and persistence of parthenogenetic species needs investigation. An ideal species for such research is a parthenogenetic mont Dahlica fennicella that appears to be as equally successful as other coexisting sexual species. We investigated whether high ploidy level of D. fennnicella is due to hybridization between closely related sexual species…

Comparison of soil microorganism abundance and diversity in stands of European aspen (Populus tremulaL.) and hybrid aspen (Populus tremuloidesMichx. …

2011

The use of short rotation forest tree species is increasing worldwide. The hybrid aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx. × P. tremula L.) is one of the suitable tree species under the climatic conditions of the Baltic region. The cultivation of these trees on former agricultural soils differs from agricultural practices with reduced soil tillage and is characterized by increased demand of nutrients, which in long term can cause changes in the soil microbial populations. The aim of our investigation was to compare soil microbial populations in hybrid aspen and European aspen (P. tremula L.) stands in four sampling plots with aspen age ranging from 10 to 46 years. The abundance and diversity of so…

The taxonomy ofOreosparte(Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae)

2013

Oreosparte is a monotypic genus described as bearing strong similarities to Hoya (Marsdenieae), but separated from it based on the presence of a campanulate corolla with a contracted throat and lanceolate, spreading lobes. Its type specimen was destroyed during the fire at the Berlin herbarium in 1943. So far no suitable lectotype or further specimens belonging to the taxon were located. We report the finding of one specimen of Oreosparte collected from the type locality, allowing the selection of a neotype, to provide an extended description, and discussion of the morphological affinities with Hoya. Based on its morphology, despite being probably closely related to Hoya, we suggest that Or…

Women, Empowerment, and Mobile Phones in the Developing World

2020

This chapter surveys and analyzes recent literature on mobile communication to examine its relationship to gender and development, more specifically how women in developing countries use and are impacted by mobile phones. Focusing on issues of power, agency, and social status, the chapter reviews how mobile telephony has been found to be implicated in patriarchal bargaining in different societies, how privacy and control are enabled through it, what benefits have been shown to accrue to women using mobile phones, and what barriers, limitations, and disadvantages of mobile use exist for women and why. The conclusion urges more gender-disaggregated analysis of mobile phone impact and use and …

Sex, social reproduction, and mobile telephony as responses to precarity in urban Tanzania

2019

The gendered effects of neoliberal economic restructuring around the world are usually studied in their most dramatic forms: cross-border migration, exploitation, resistance, and violence. This chapter examines significant transformations arising from economic restructuring in the nexus between gender, labour, and urban space — transformations in which mobile technologies are deeply implicated. It explores how mobile phones are used by the poor for day-to-day survival in Tanzania’s largest city. The chapter shows how gendered economic bargains are negotiated at the very bottom of a survival economy located within the dynamics of a globalized economic system. An important characteristic of m…

Mobile telephony in emerging markets: The importance of dual-SIM phones

2020

Abstract A substantial share of customers in emerging markets use dual-SIM phones and subscribe to two mobile networks. A primary motive for so called multi-simming is to take advantage of cheap on-net services from both networks. In our modelling effort, we augment the seminal model of competing telephone networks á la Laffont, Rey and Tirole (1998b) by a segment of flexible price hunters that may choose to multi-sim. According to our findings, in equilibrium, the networks set a high off-net price in the linear tariffs to achieve segmentation. This induces the price hunters to multi-sim. We show that increased deployment of dual-SIM phones may induce a mixing equilibrium with high expected…

Integration of Peripheral Adiposity Signals and Psychological Controls of Appetite

2007

Publisher Summary This chapter presents an overview of the major anatomical and neurochemical participants in brain reward circuitry. It also elaborates the evidence available to date that supports the hypothesis that energy regulatory signals can modulate food reward. Psychological modulation of feeding involves taste hedonics and preferences, and the rewarding aspects of food. The brain circuitries implicated in stimulus reward, and in the regulation of energy balance, have traditionally been considered as separate. However, more recently, accumulated evidence suggests that there is both anatomical and functional crosstalk between these sets of central nervous system (CNS) circuitry. Addi…

Electromagnetic Form Factors in the Time Like Domain

2008

The electromagnetic form factors in the time like domain can be accessed by the reaction p ¯ p → e + e − or its time inversed process. Despite a long standing experimental effort to determine these form factors, the precision in the knowledge of the ratio | G E | / | G M | ist still very poor in the time like domain. All world data suffer from limited statistics and therefore have used the hypothesis of | G E | = | G M | in order to extract a value for | G M | . While there is no theory argument for this hypothesis, recent JLAB data from polarisation transfer in elastic electron scattering show, that this hypothesis does not hold. Only a few data points allow the determination of | G E | / …
