The DNA-binding of the natural benzophenanthridine alkaloid chelerythrine (CHE) has been assessed by combining molecular modeling and optical absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, both double-helical (B-DNA) and G-quadruplex sequences—representative of different topologies and possessing biological relevance, such as telomeric or regulatory sequences—have been considered. An original multiscale protocol, making use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations, allowed us to compare the theoretical and experimental circular dichroism spectra of the different DNA topologies, readily providing atomic-level details of the CHE–DNA binding…

miRToolsGallery: a tag-based and rankable microRNA bioinformatics resources database portal

2017

Abstract Hundreds of bioinformatics tools have been developed for MicroRNA (miRNA) investigations including those used for identification, target prediction, structure and expression profile analysis. However, finding the correct tool for a specific application requires the tedious and laborious process of locating, downloading, testing and validating the appropriate tool from a group of nearly a thousand. In order to facilitate this process, we developed a novel database portal named miRToolsGallery. We constructed the portal by manually curating > 950 miRNA analysis tools and resources. In the portal, a query to locate the appropriate tool is expedited by being searchable, filterable and …

Parametrical Optomechanical Oscillations in PhoXonic Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators

2019

AbstractWe report on the experimental and theoretical analysis of parametrical optomechanical oscillations in hollow spherical phoxonic whispering gallery mode resonators due to radiation pressure. The optically excited acoustic eigenmodes of the phoxonic cavity oscillate regeneratively leading to parametric oscillation instabilities.

Optimal Guard Placement Problem Under L-Visibility

2006

Two points a and b in the presence of polygonal obstacles are L-visible if the length of the shortest path avoiding obstacles is no more than L. For a given convex polygon Q, Gewali et al [4]. addressed the guard placement problem on the exterior boundary that will cover the maximum area exterior to the polygon under L-visibility. They proposed a linear time algorithm for some given value of L. When the length L is greater than half of the perimeter, they declared that problem as open. Here we address that open problem and present an algorithm whose time complexity is linear in number of vertices of the polygon.

Artilleriâ Velikogo Knâžestva Litovskogo v XVII v. : finansirovanie, voennye transportnye rashody, remeslennaâ rabota

2015

State artillery in Lithuania in the seventeenth century was relatively neglected area of military and only from 1637 years it constituted a separate body. In the second half of the seventeenth century cannon in the arsenals of Lithuania were outdated and there were rarely works with new ones. During this period, it also struggled with the problem of its unification. In the Grand Duchy of Lithuania there was also a private artillery, and the law allowed anyone nobleman, if he could afford it, to have a cannon. The private fortresses they were much more modern than the artillery State. Another issue was transporting artillery to the war, which was associated with the employment of many people,…

Bibliometric analysis of publications by South African viticulture and oenology research centres

2012

We analysed the production, impact factor of, and scientific collaboration involved in viticulture and oenology articles associated with South African research centres published in international journals during the period 1990–2009. The articles under scrutiny were obtained from the Science Citation Index database, accessed via the Web of Knowledge platform. The search strategy employed specific viticulture and oenology terms and was restricted to the field ‘topic’. The results showed that 406 articles were published during the review period, with the most number of publications being in the South African Journal of Enology and Viticulture (n = 34), American Journal of Enology and Vit…

Cylindrical optical microcavities: Basic properties and sensor applications

2011

Abstract A detailed theoretical analysis of the basic properties of whispering-gallery modes (WGM) of thin capillaries is presented. The sensitivity of the resonances, as well as the Q factor is analyzed as a function of the structural parameters of the capillary and the refractive index inside the capillary. A practical application where thin capillaries are used for the measurement of glucose concentration in water is presented as a chemical sensor demonstrator. A best sensitivity of 1.24 nm/% of glucose concentration in water is reported, which corresponds to more than 850 nm/RIU. Additionally, different experimental approaches are discussed to improve the sensitivity and the detection l…
