Tunable narrowband fiber laser with feedback based on whispering gallery mode resonances of a cylindrical microresonator.

2013

Narrowband filtering based on whispering gallery modes of a slightly tapered cylindrical optical microresonator was used to implement a tunable narrowband erbium-doped fiber laser. The laser can be set to emit a single longitudinal cavity mode (single frequency), although the laser cavity is a few meters long. In the single-frequency regime the laser can emit a maximum power of 0.380 mW with a linewidth <35 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 50 dB. Tunability is achieved by sliding the excitation point along the microcylinder. A tuning range of 1.16 nm is demonstrated.

Image og the Teacher in Schools Websites – Representative of the School

2015

Article consists of three parts - theoretical, empirical research and recommendations for improvement the school website photo galleries. Publication analyses ideas (Weber&Mitchell, Ķestere, Kaļķe, Fischer&Kiefer, Veide) that reveal importance of the teacher's image in the representation of the school, significance of the picture and selfpromotion in the school context. The empirical study consider teacher’s image in 17 Latvian school website photo galleries and surveys 102 primary school student’s parents to find out their views on the school website photo galleries impact on the selection of the school for their children. Analysis of the theoretical literature and interpre…

Mode cleaning in graphene oxide-doped polymeric whispering gallery mode microresonators

2020

The strategy to incorporate graphene oxide (GO) in a composite material offers significant opportunities to realize compact photonic devices, such as saturable absorbers and polarization selective devices. However, the processing of GO-based composites by direct laser writing, which would afford vast patterning and material flexibility in a single step process, has been little addressed. In this work, we investigated the mechanisms underlying a mode cleaning effect in polymeric whispering gallery mode microresonators containing GO, aiming at the development of on-chip integrable photonic devices. We fabricated the microresonators (cavity loaded Q-factor of 20 000 at 1550 nm) in a single ste…

L’inventario dei giogali del cavaliere Fra’ Alessio di Ferro (1700-80): alcune considerazioni sull’oreficeria tra Sicilia e Malta

2019

The article deals with the inventory, in part unpublished, of 1763 of the jewels owned by the knight of Saint John Fra 'Alessio di Ferro, which is located in the State Archives in Trapani. He was an illustrious exponent of one of the most prominent families in the centuries of the city of Trapani linked to the island of Malta. The inventory offers the opportunity to reflect on typologies, materials and styles most in vogue between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the Mediterranean jewellery and, consequently, the inspiration for some transversal reflections concerning the history of the male jewelry, still little explored, among Sicily and Malta.

Frequency comb generation in whispering gallery mode silica microsphere resonators

2021

Optical frequency combs (OFC) using different kinds of whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have already shown different applications and especially their applications in fiber optical communication systems as replacements of laser-arrays. For this application the free spectral range (FSR) of 200 GHz or less is desirable. Besides the fabrication material for microspheres, the resonator radius can be modified to change the FSR. In this paper use of silica microspheres for OFC represents an inexpensive alternative over the other microcombs: microring, microdisk, and microtoroid. We experimentally present a microsphere fabrication process from a different kind of silica (SiO2) fibers …

A Curious Marian Coral Ex-voto from Sicily: an Historical-Artistic and Anthropological Interpretation

2022

This paper is inspired by an ex-voto in the shape of a sea animal made of red coral dating back to the 19th century, which was found in a well-known Marian treasury of Sicily. This small amulet is significant both for its shape and material and has given rise to some historical-artistic and anthropological reflections

Additive effects of cherlerythrine chloride combination with erlotinib in human non-small cell lung cancer cells

2017

Several studies implicate that lung cancer progression is governed by the interaction between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling and protein kinase C (PKC) pathways. Combined the targeting of EGFR and PKC may have an additive or synergistic effects in lung cancer treatment. The aim of this study is to explore the potential utility by inhibiting these two pathways with the combination of erlotinib and chelerythrine chloride in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines. The erlotinib-less sensitive cell lines SK-MES-1 and A549 were treated with erlotinib or chelerythrine by themselves or in combination with each other. The cell viability, clonogenic survival, cell migration…

Activation of L-arginine transport by protein kinase C in rabbit, rat and mouse alveolar macrophages

1998

1 The role of protein kinase C in controlling L-arginine transport in alveolar macrophages was investigated. 2 L-[3H]Arginine uptake in rabbit alveolar macrophages declined by 80 % after 20 h in culture. 4β-Phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), but not 4α-phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (α-PMA), present during 20 h culture, enhanced L-[3H]arginine uptake more than 10-fold. Staurosporine and chelerythrine opposed this effect. 3 L-[3H]Arginine uptake was saturable and blockable by L-lysine. After PMA treatment Vmax was increased more than 5-fold and Km was reduced from 0.65 to 0.32 mM. 4 Time course experiments showed that PMA increased L-[3H]arginine uptake almost maximally within 2 h. This…

Newborn screening and disease variants predict neurological outcome in isovaleric aciduria.

2021

Isovaleric aciduria (IVA), a metabolic disease with severe (classic IVA) or attenuated phenotype (mild IVA), is included in newborn screening (NBS) programs worldwide. The long-term clinical benefit of screened individuals, however, is still rarely investigated. A national, prospective, observational, multi-center study of individuals with confirmed IVA identified by NBS between 1998 and 2018 was conducted. Long-term clinical outcomes of 94 individuals with IVA were evaluated, representing 73.4% (for classic IVA: 92.3%) of the German NBS cohort. In classic IVA (N = 24), NBS prevented untimely death except in one individual with lethal neonatal sepsis (3.8%) but did not completely prevent si…
