"Libero ed eloquente". La Vista alla Scuola di De Sanctis
2015
Analisi del rapporto tra parola e azione nella teoria del primo De Sanctis e nella personalità di Luigi La Vista. The essay focuses on the connection between the concepts of word and action in the thought of jung De Sanctis and in that of his pupil, Luigi La Vista.
Waiting for Fatima to become Sophie
2018
2023
In Odyssey, Book 4, Proteus, the old man of the sea, is represented as a divine figure in possess of peculiar skills: a prophetic art as well as a metamorphic one, which, full of tricks (dolìe techne), enables him to escape anyone who tries to capture him for knowing his/her own future, and this is properly the case of the Spartan king Menelaus. In this way, it emerges that the Proteus’ expertise, a technical one, depends on the methodic recalling to the memory of various morphological status, whose repeated seriality is the guarantee of being successful in changing his form continuously: the use of the expression “he (i.e. the old man) did not forget his tricky art” (v. 455) deserves consi…
Cryptic diversity within three South American whip spider species (Arachnida, Amblypygi)
2020
4 pages; International audience; Cryptic diversity (CD), the presence of highly divergent phylogenetic lineages within closed morphological species, has been documented for many taxa. Great arachnid orders such as Araneae or Scorpiones are well studied and many cases of CD have been described therein; to date, however, related research on smaller arachnid orders, such as whip spiders (Amblypygi), remains lacking. In the current study, we investigated CD based on cytochrome oxidase 1 (COI) in three nominal species of the genus Heterophrynus (H. alces, H. batesii, and H. longicornis), represented by 65 specimens. The sequences were compared using three different methods. All three species sho…
Successive Losses of Central Immune Genes Characterize the Gadiformes' Alternate Immunity.
2016
Great genetic variability among teleost immunomes, with gene losses and expansions of central adaptive and innate components, has been discovered through genome sequencing over the last few years. Here, we demonstrate that the innate Myxovirus resistance gene (Mx) is lost from the ancestor of Gadiformes and the closely related Stylephorus chordatus, thus predating the loss of Major Histocompatibility Complex class II (MHCII) in Gadiformes. Although the functional implication of Mx loss is still unknown, we demonstrate that this loss is one of several ancient events appearing in successive order throughout the evolution of teleost immunity. In particular, we find that the loss of Toll-like r…
CRISPR-mediated strand displacement logic circuits with toehold-free DNA
2021
DNA nanotechnology, and DNA computing in particular, has grown extensively over the past decade to end with a variety of functional stable structures and dynamic circuits. However, the use as designer elements of regular DNA pieces, perfectly complementary double strands, has remained elusive. Here, we report the exploitation of CRISPR-Cas systems to engineer logic circuits based on isothermal strand displacement that perform with toehold-free double-stranded DNA. We designed and implemented molecular converters for signal detection and amplification, showing good interoperability between enzymatic and nonenzymatic processes. Overall, these results contribute to enlarge the repertoire of su…
Effects of multiple stressors on the dimensionality of ecological stability
2021
Abstract Ecological stability is a multidimensional construct. Investigating multiple stability dimensions is key to understand how ecosystems respond to disturbance. Here, we evaluated the single and combined effects of common agricultural stressors (insecticide, herbicide and nutrients) on four dimensions of stability (resistance, resilience, recovery and invariability) and on the overall dimensionality of stability (DS) using the results of a freshwater mesocosm experiment. Functional recovery and resilience to pesticides were enhanced in nutrient‐enriched systems, whereas compositional recovery was generally not achieved. Pesticides did not affect compositional DS, whereas functional DS…
Extended haplodiploidy hypothesis
2019
P.R., M.P., and H.H. were supported by Academy of Finland (grant 258385 to M.P., grant 135970 to H.H., and 252411 to the Centre of Excellence in Biological Interactions), P.R. also by the Royal Society Newton International Fellowship, and H.H. also by the Kone Foundation. Evolution of altruistic behavior was a hurdle for the logic of Darwinian evolution. Soon after Hamilton formalized the concept of inclusive fitness, which explains how altruism can evolve, he suggested that the high sororal relatedness brought by haplodiploidy could be why Hymenopterans have a high prevalence in eusocial species, and why helpers in Hymenoptera are always female. Later it was noted that in order to capitali…
