Although Roman inscriptions have attracted interest since the Renaissance, epigraphy was not acknowledged as a science in its own right, with its own ruleset and methods, until the mid-19th century. Henceforth every newly discovered inscription was duly documented and distributed across an ever-growing and influential network of European scholars, giving birth to an extensive system of scholarly correspondence connecting every individual researcher with the community, from the provincial antiquarian who, as a precursor to « field archaeology », would discover the inscriptions, to the Parisian scholar who would gather and examine every inscription sent his way. The essay intends to look at the well-known book,Autumn, by Ali Smith, shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and analyse the ways in which the debates leading to as well as the events following the 2016 Brexit referendum contribute to the writing of a desfunctional narration in which borders, domestic spaces and identities are questioned on a daily basis. Il saggio esamina le peculiarità del barocco dissonante di Gesualdo Bufalino. In Bufalino l’artificio dello stile sottende una tensione ideologica. L’intensità espressiva e l’eccesso verbale cercano di compensare un vuoto e costituiscono, nel sentire dello scrittore, un formidabile mezzo «per contrastare l’ossificazione del mondo». Bufalino rivendica quindi il valore strutturale della propria scelta barocca, dichiarando che la sua scrittura è sorretta da un «barocco borrominiano» in cui «l’ornato è funzione», in mancanza del quale «l’architettura cadrebbe».
