Long-term stability of alpha particle damage in natural zircon

Abstract We report the first discovery of radiation damage haloes generated by alpha particles in zircon. Proterozoic zircon crystals from a potassium-rich leucogranite from the Adirondack Mountains, New York State, have interior regions that are generally low in actinide elements (UO 2 + ThO 2 ≤ 0.02 wt.%) but show a remarkable pattern of heterogeneous metamictisation. The degree of radiation damage in these regions is not uniformly low, as would be expected if it corresponded to the observed actinide distribution patterns and age of the crystals. On the origin of ‘arrested’ charnockitization in the Chilka Lake area, Eastern Ghats Belt, India: a reappraisal

Arrested-type charnockite formation occurs in an assemblage of high-grade gneisses at several localities of the Chilka Lake area that belongs to the Proterozoic Eastern Ghats Belt of India. The isolated ellipsoidal domains are found exclusively in leucogranite (leptynite) bands that intruded lit-par- lit interbanded granulite-grade supracrustal and intermediate igneous rocks (khondalite–enderbite). Macrostructures and microfabrics document a multiple deformation of the rock assemblage under high-grade conditions. The synorogenic Palmental complex (central Damara Belt, Nambia) consists of ca. 545 Ma old quartz diorites and rare granodiorites and ca. 520 Ma-old leucogranites, representing one of the earliest and most primitive phase of crustal plutonism predating the main high-T regional metamorphism. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U–Th–Pb dating of magmatic zircon from the synkinematic Egrigoz and Koyunoba granites and a leucogranite dyke dates core-complex formation in the northern Anatolide belt of western Turkey at 24–19 Ma. The granites intrude into the footwall of the Simav detachment and are strongly elongated in the NNE direction parallel to tectonic transport on the detachment. Abstract The ca. 1.0–1.1 Ga Vijayan Complex (VC) of eastern and southeastern Sri Lanka is one of three high-grade metamorphic terranes making up the basement of the island and is in tectonic contact with the adjacent, older Highland Complex. It consists predominantly of granitoid gneisses ranging in composition from diorite to leucogranite, with a distinct calc-alkaline geochemical signature, and is interpreted as a magmatic arc. Abstract The Ider Complex of the Tarbagatai Block in northwestern Mongolia is part of a Precambrian microcontinental terrane in the Central Asian Orogen Belt and has experienced a polymetamorphic tectono-metamorphic evolution. We have investigated an enderbitic gneiss, derived from a quartz diorite and a charnockite, derived from a leucogranite, and zircon SHRIMP data reveal late Archaean protolith ages of 2520–2546 Ma for these rocks. Metamorphic overgrowth on these zircons as well as newly-formed metamorphic zircons document a high-temperature metamorphic event (T = 930–950 °C) at about 1855–1860 Ma. Abstract Ascent of granitic melt initiates under suprasolidus conditions in the mid- to lower crust before continuing through subsolidus rocks to higher crustal levels. Whereas migration of melt in suprasolidus rocks can occur in pervasive net-like structures and involve relatively small melt volumes, ascent through the subsolidus crust requires more focused, dyke-like structures and larger volumes to prevent freezing. Multistage geochronological evolution of the Velká Fatra Mountains—a combined TIMS and ion-microprobe study on zircons

Abstract New isotopic and geochronological data from the Velka Fatra Mountains (Tatric Unit of the Central Western Carpathians) are presented and discussed with a focus on the Variscan orogeny and events during Permian and Early Triassic times. The investigated samples are meta- to per-aluminous granitoids and their trace element patterns indicate a volcanic arc origin. This study presents U–Pb single zircon data, measured on TIMS as well as on an ion-microprobe (SIMS). The zircon age determinations were additionally constrained by cathodoluminescence (CL).
