Monte Carlo Tests of Nucleation Concepts in the Lattice Gas Model

The conventional theory of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation in a supersaturated vapor is tested by Monte Carlo simulations of the lattice gas (Ising) model with nearest-neighbor attractive interactions on the simple cubic lattice. The theory considers the nucleation process as a slow (quasi-static) cluster (droplet) growth over a free energy barrier $\Delta F^*$, constructed in terms of a balance of surface and bulk term of a "critical droplet" of radius $R^*$, implying that the rates of droplet growth and shrinking essentially balance each other for droplet radius $R=R^*$. Experimental investigation on different rainfall energy harvesting structures

In this paper proposes an experimental comparison between different rainfall harvesting devices and the study of the corresponding electrical rectifying circuit. More in detail, three harvesting structures are considered: the cantilever, the bridge and the floating circle. For each of the proposed structure, different waveforms have been acquired and discussed. The processed data have been compared in order to suggest the best choice for the rectifying circuit, from the simplest one to the most endorsed in the technical literature.

Optomechanical to mechanical entanglement transformation

We present a scheme for generating entanglement between two mechanical oscillators that have never interacted with each other by using an entanglement-swapping protocol. The system under study consists of a Michelson-Morley interferometer comprising mechanical systems embodied by two cantilevers. Each of them is coupled to a field mode via the radiation pressure mechanism. Entanglement between the two mechanical systems is set by measuring the output modes of the interferometer. We also propose a control mechanism for the amount of entanglement based on path-length difference between the two arms. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

Mechanical properties of sol–gel derived SiO2 nanotubes

The mechanical properties of thick-walled SiO2 nanotubes (NTs) prepared by a sol–gel method while using Ag nanowires (NWs) as templates were measured by using different methods. In situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) cantilever beam bending tests were carried out by using a nanomanipulator equipped with a force sensor in order to investigate plasticity and flexural response of NTs. Thickness measurement of soft thin films on periodically patterned magnetic substrates by phase difference magnetic force microscopy

The need for accurate measurement of the thickness of soft thin films is continuously encouraging the development of techniques suitable for this purpose. We propose a method through which the thickness of the film is deduced from the quantitative measurement of the contrast in the phase images of the sample surface acquired by magnetic force microscopy, provided that the film is deposited on a periodically patterned magnetic substrate.
