CaCl2, Bisoxazoline, and Malonate: A Protocol for an Asymmetric Michael Reaction

A mild protocol for the asymmetric Michael addition of dimethyl malonate to various α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds was developed. The salient feature of this methodology is that a cheap and environmentally friendly Lewis acid, CaCl2, was used as a catalyst. An aminoindanol- and pyridine-derived ligand provided in the presence of CaCl2 Michael adducts in moderate to high enantioselectivities. The scope of the reaction was demonstrated.
Design of neutral Lewis superacids of group 13 elements.

A general approach toward superstrong neutral Lewis acids, featuring both the pyramidalization of acceptor molecules and the introduction of electron-withdrawing substituents, is proposed and examined theoretically. Complexes of group 13 element derivatives with ammonia at the B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory with def2-TZVPP basis set are considered as examples. Pyramidalization of the acceptor molecule significantly increases its Lewis acidity (by 50-60 kJ mol(-1) for aluminum and gallium compounds and by 120-130 kJ mol(-1) for boron compounds). A kinetic study of the cracking, isomerization, and disproportionation of n-heptane on a chromium-exchanged Y zeolite

The kinetic rate constants for the cracking, isomerization, and disproportionation of n-heptane over a CrHNaY (32% chromium exchanged) zeolite catalyst at 400, 450, and 470 °C have been calculated. The interaction of n-heptane with a model Lewis acid such as BF3 and progress along the reaction coordinate have been studied by means of molecular orbital calculations. From the kinetic results, i.e., activation energies and frequency factors, and the theoretical calculations, it can be concluded that the controlling step in these reactions is not the formation of the carbonium ion, but the subsequent transformation of this carbonium ion. The molecular mechanism of the Povarov reaction in acetonitrile has been studied at the MPWB1K/6-311G** level of theory. This reaction follows a domino process that comprises two sequential reactions: (i) a Lewis acid catalysed aza-Diels–Alder (A-DA) reaction between a N-aryl imine and a nucleophilic ethylene yielding a formal [4 + 2] cycloadduct; (ii) a stepwise 1,3-hydrogen shift at this intermediate affording the final tetrahydroquinoline. At this computational level, the Lewis acid catalysed A-DA reaction presents a two-step mechanism as a consequence of the large stabilisation of the corresponding zwitterionic intermediate. Using the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT), a set of uncatalyzed and X2 molecule-catalyzed (X2 = F2, Cl2, Br2, or I2) aza Michael addition reactions (aza-MARs) between pyrrolidine (PYR) and methyl acrylate (MA) have been studied in the gas phase and in dichloromethane (DCM) medium from the kinetics and molecular mechanism aspects. Analysis of the conceptual DFT reactivity indices indicates that the coordination of the X2 molecules to the oxygen of the MA's carbonyl group increases both the softness and the electrophilic character of MA, thus explaining the catalytic role of the X2 molecules. The (10, 10) single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) presents consistency between relatively small solubility, and large partition coefficients and kinetic stability. The solubility of SWNTs is investigated in a variety of solvents, finding a class of non-hydrogen-bonding Lewis bases that provides good solubility. The organic solvent–water partition and hydrophobic moment of lysozyme show that the main contribution to the water-accessible surface area of helices is the hydrophobic term, while the hydrophilic part dominates in the sheet, which is related to the 1-octanol–, cyclohexane– and chloroform–water partition coefficients Po−ch−cf of helices, which are greater than those of the sheet. Abstract The molecular mechanism for the Diels–Alder reaction of N-acyl-1-aza-1,3-butadiene with dimethylvinylamine has been studied using density functional theory methods. This cycloaddition is the nucleophilic attack of the vinylamine to the conjugate position of the unsaturated acyl imine with concomitant ring-closure. The presence of a Lewis acid catalyst coordinated to the acyl oxygen atom decreases markedly the activation energy associated to the nucleophilic attack. This results from an increasing of the electrophilicity of the 1-aza-1,3-butadiene that shift the mechanism from a highly asynchronous concerted process to a polar stepwise one.
Density functional theory study of the Lewis acid-catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction of nitroalkenes with vinyl ethers using aluminum derivatives

The inverse electron demand Diels–Alder reaction of nitroalkenes with vinyl ethers catalyzed by Lewis acids based on aluminum metal, AlMe3, Al(OMe)3 and AlCl3 was studied using density functional theory methods. A continuum model was selected to represent the effects of dichloromethane used as solvent. For this cycloaddition reaction two reactive channels corresponding to the endo and exo approach modes of the vinyl ether to the Lewis acid-coordinated nitroalkene were studied. Coordination of the aluminum metal to an oxygen atom of the nitroalkene increases the electrophilicity of the heterodiene, decreasing the activation energy of the cycloaddition.
