The Diccionario Inglés-Español de Contabilidad: Traducción and the Diccionario Inglés-Español de Contabilidad: Traducción de Frases y Expresiones: Tw…
2014
This paper focuses on the role dictionaries play in a translation situation. This role is analysed in terms of the tenets of the Function Theory of Lexicography, which proposes that users do not have needs in general but punctual needs in specific situations. For example, translators of accounting texts need insertable equivalents whose meanings and language behaviour are clearly described. Furthermore, translators also need contextual data on domain-specific consensual usage. The construction of the Accounting Dictionaries and Diccionarios de Contabilidad reveals that the Function Theory offers theoretical and practical solutions for constructing dictionaries that target user needs in a pr…
Translation and lexicography: a necessary dialogue
2014
Firstly, the fields of Translation and Lexicography are compared and their similarities and differences are brought to the fore. Later, a review of the (slightly scarce) literature on the topic shows that most of the work has focused on how translators use dictionaries, how useful they are, and which kinds of dictionaries are preferred, among other similar issues. It is highlighted that lexicographers show little interest in the field of translation, at least as a source for dictionary building. A few potential avenues of research are defined, which could be beneficial for translators and lexicographers alike. Se comparan en primer lugar los campos de la Traducción y de la Lexicografía, pon…
Reflections on the role and design of online dictionaries for specialised translation
2014
This article is an updated and modified version of a Spanish article published in MonTi 6 (cf. Tarp 2014a). It deals with specialised translation dictionaries. Based on the principles of the function theory, it analyses the different phases and sub-phases of the translation process from a lexicographical perspective and shows that a translation dictionary should be much more than a mere bilingual dictionary if it really pretends to meet its users’ complex needs. Thereafter, it presents a global concept of a translation dictionary which includes various mono- and bilingual components in both language directions. Finally, the article discusses, by means of two concrete online projects, how th…
Translation and lexicography: a necessary dialogue
2014
Polish Americans in the History of Bilingual Lexicography: The State of the Art
2018
This paper measures dictionaries made by Polish Americans against the development of the Polish–English and English–Polish lexicographic tradition. Of twenty nine monoscopal and biscopal glossaries and dictionaries published between 1788 and 1947, four may be treated as mile-stones: Erazm Rykaczewski's (1849–1851), Władysław Kierst and Oskar Callier's (1895), Władysław Kierst's (1926–1928), and Jan Stanisławski's (1929). Unsurprisingly, they came to be widely repub-lished in English-speaking countries, primarily the United States of America, for the sake of Polish-speaking immigrants. One might therefore wonder whether there was any pressing need for new dictionaries. There must have been, …

Ludwik Krzyżanowski's English-Polish lexicographic projects: evidence from the PIASA archives
2015
The present paper is a contribution to the history of Polish-English and English-Polish lexicography. It aims to throw some light on two bilingual dictionaries compiled by Ludwik Krzyżanowski, which have so far been shrouded in mystery. Fonds no. 49 deposited in the New York archives of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (PIASA) provide archives in New York provide valuable data on the author and his scholarly activity, as well as a tiny part of a dictionary typescript that allows for a preliminary assessment of the lexicographic endeavour.
La linguistica vista dalle Alpi. Teoria, lessicografia e multilinguismo
2019
Il volume raccoglie contributi che hanno come principale tema di ricerca la multiforme realtà linguistica dell’ambiente alpino. The contributions of this book deal with the diverse linguistic situation of the Alps by focusing on phenomena of standard and minority languages which belong to the Romance and Germanic group. They address four main topics which correspond to the four sections of the book: linguistic theory, val…
Korpusa datu izmantošana mūsdienu mācību vārdnīcās angļu valodā
2018
Szkic z dziejów leksykografii dwujęzycznej: Paweł Sobolewski i jego Słownik angielsko-polski… (1840)
2016
This article focuses on Paweł Sobolewski’s manuscript dictionary, Słownik angielsko- polski… (1840), which his biographers allege was lost during shipment from America to Europe. However, part of the manuscript embracing the alphabet range B‒E is held at the archive of the Polish Library in Paris, thus allowing the author to discuss facts and myths concerning the dictionary, and make an attempt at its assessment. Much attention is paid in the paper to Sobolewski’s biography, which may be illustrated and partly verified with the extant correspondence.
