This paper reports on some results of two surveys at sea carried out in the surroundings of a urban wastewater discharge on the coast of the Golfo di Palermo, western Sicily (Italy). At the time of the surveys (year 2005) the stretch of water lying before the central part of the capital town received the untreated wastewater originating from about 200 000 inhabitants, which was discharged on-shore without any prior treatment by the free-surface outfall of “Porta Felice main sewer”. Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were prepared in aluminate, phosphate, and silicate-based electrolytic solutions using a soft-sparking regime in a multi-frequency stepped process to compare the structure, corrosion, and wear characteristics of the obtained coatings on AZ31 magnesium alloy. The XRD results indicated that all coatings consist of MgO and MgF2, while specific products such as Mg2SiO4, MgSiO3, Mg2P2O7, and MgAl2O4 were also present in specimens based on the selected solution. Surface morphology of the obtained coatings was strongly affected by the electrolyte composition. Practice for determining friction in hydraulic winch systems

This paper presents a method for estimating friction in hydraulic active heave compensated (AHC) offshore winches. The method is a two-step approach where the first step is to model the friction loss in the hydraulic motors based on data from the sub-supplier. The second step requires real-life testing, where the remaining friction losses in the winch system is identified and modeled. In this context, a practice is characterized by obtaining a friction loss estimation with the highest possible accuracy over the widest possible range of operating conditions with a limited amount of experimental work.
