Empires expand their hegemony combined two contrasting forces; one is violence the second is characterized by persuasion. Ideology works in these contexts, as an efficient instrument of self-indoctrination whereby dominated cultures accept the cultural matrix of empire. In this vein, the present essay-review not only questions the employment of human rights in the liberal thought, but also tries to respond to the conceptual problems of liberalism to understand terrorism. Based on two seminal texts written by the liberal Michael Ignatieff, we formulate the thesis that liberalism supports the war against terror because of its doctrine of self-determination.

What are the alternative planning ideas? Planning is a field where different paradigms meet. How can one approach that? Their suggestion is a combination of participatory and critical planning. There is a strong account of planning and sustainability with better links between planning and Higher Education. Empowerment may provide a connection. For both planning and education, we need an understanding of context. The discussion of universities is thought-provoking.

This chapter presents the transition from a nationalist to post-nationalist period since the 1980s as the increasing systematic mobility and European cooperation as well as the fall of the Soviet Union turned Finnish higher education towards Western cooperation. The new internationalization strategies first aimed at founding mobility programmes for higher education and then particularly English medium study programmes. AbstractThe present contribution will concentrate on the central issue discussed by Bessarion in one of his major works, the De natura et arte (written in 1458 and published in 1469 as the sixth book of Bessarion’s In calumniatorem Platonis), i. e. the concept of deliberation and the relationship between nature, purposiveness and deliberation. In De natura et arte Bessarion responds to an attack by George of Trebizond, who had demonstrated, against Bessarion, not only that nature does not deliberate, but also that deliberation cannot be attributed to God who guides nature either, since deliberation implies doubt and ignorance. In this article we analyze the Pestaña’s Syndicalist Party (SP) to better clarify some of the doctrinal contours of the heterogeneous libertarian movement. To do this, we first define a framework, understanding the libertarian movement as a political culture where we have established antipoliticism as one of its fundamental principles.
