Controlled Release of Metformin Hydrochloride from Core-Shell Nanofibers with Fish Sarcoplasmic Protein
2019
Ficai, Anton/0000-0002-1777-0525; Karademir, Betul/0000-0003-1762-0284 WOS:000503463400074 PubMed ID: 31658758 Background and Objectives: A coaxial electrospinning technique was used to produce core/shell nanofibers of a polylactic acid (PLA) as a shell and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing metformin hydrochloride (MH) as a core. Materials and Methods: Fish sarcoplasmic protein (FSP) was extracted from fresh bonito and incorporated into nanofiber at various concentrations to investigate the influence on properties of the coaxial nanofibers. The morphology, chemical structure and thermal properties of the nanofibers were studied. Results: The results show that uniform and bead-free struct…

Efficient Port Pricing: A New Methodology Applied to Spanish Commercial Ports
2000
This paper presents a methodology for determining efficient tariffs for the services provided by commercial ports. With this method, efficient unit profits can be obtained for the services offered and their margins of sensitivity can be found. This allows port authorities to determine what actions should be taken with regard to tariffs and/or variable costs in order to optimise their economic results. At the same time, shadow prices of port resources and their limits of sensitivity can be obtained, thus providing port authorities with orientation regarding which resources should be augmented and by how much. In the early 90's, this methodology was applied to all Spanish commercial ports and…

The Changing Policies of International Institutions: Human Mobility in the Mediterranean
2022
The transition from a liberal international system to an alternative political world order makes state coalitions increasingly vulnerable. The transition also affects international institutions and international policy-making processes as well. Some international actors are becoming politically irrelevant, while other political actors are acquiring a more central role in the world political system. This chapter studies the transition in political order and its effects on the roles and policies of international institutions in a crucial sector: migration. The development of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), a…
Editorial. Migration and migration studies in late neoliberal times
2021
We are witnessing an “ostentatiously inhuman” (ostentatamente disumana) (Ferrajoli 2018) politics directed against migrant women and men in every part of the world, particularly in the more affluent countries. These countries were formerly referred to as developed countries, thus using a term that failed to cover over the colonialist rhetoric used against less developed ones. The same rhetoric resurfaces today, as shown by those countries that have recently joined the network of global(ised) development. This politics makes no distinctions based on age, religious orientation, economic, social, and political motivations of migration. We are facing a “war against migrations” (Palidda 2018) in…
