Occupations of Housing and Social Centers in Rome: A Durable Resistance to Neoliberalism and Institutionalization

Squatting for housing and social centers has a long tradition in Rome since the end of the 1960s. By the mid-1970s, the occupation of buildings to set up political and social activities became part of the repertoire of left radical movements. In this chapter a set of 34 squatted spaces for housing and social centers in Rome active in 2014 is analysed. Squatting practices thus provide a lens to interpret the evolution of urban struggles, urban development and the changing sociopolitical contexts. This article aims to establish a line of continuity between John Dewey's democratic and educational ideals and the practice of action research, to justify that the latter affords an adequate means to enact Dewey's ideals against the destructive challenges that neoliberalism poses to democracy today. The aim of the article is to present the idea of social humanism by Tadeusz Zieliński, an outstanding classical philologist, thinker, creator of the phenomenon called Slavic Renaissance, being a professor at St. Petersburg University (until 1920) and Warsaw University, a doctor h. c. at many high schools in the country as well as abroad. In order to design a model of moral neuroeducation for pluralistic and democratic societies three core issues need to be addressed in-depth: firstly, the cerebral basis of moral behaviour (neuroethics); secondly, how neuroscientific knowledge can be engaged in the teaching of moral education (moral neuroeducation); and finally, the specific ethical model underpinning this area of education (moral and political philosophy).
