IPR gender gaps: a first look at utility model, design right and trademark filings

2018

This study extends the analysis of the gender gap in patenting into design rights, utility model (UMs) and trademarks (TMs), which are complementary methods for protecting intellectual property. The analysis is descriptive and uses register data from the Finnish patent and registration office covering the years 1982–2013. A persistent gender gap is found for all intellectual property rights. The gap has narrowed over time for national patent, design right and TM filings but not for UM filings. It is found that, in comparison to men, women are relatively less often single inventors or designers and more often members of inventor or designer teams. peerReviewed

Impact of e-government on transaction cost and FDI inflows: A proposed conceptual framework

2011

Published version of an article in International Journal of Business and Management, 6(11), 285-296. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/ijbm.v6n11p285 Although vast normative e-government literature supports the assertion that implementation of e-government reduces transaction cost and promotes Foreign Direct Investment; empirical evidence to support this thesis is limited. Even more, there is limited attempt when studying this phenomenon to integrate e-government literature with other literatures in which major constructs of interest are rooted. This article contributes to reducing this gap by establishing a conceptual framework that integrates e-government lite…

E-Government in Marketing a Country: A Strategy for Reducing Transaction Cost of Doing Business in Tanzania

2011

Published version of an article in International Journal of Marketing Studies, 3(4), 2-16. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/ijms.v3n4p2 There are limited studies examining the role of Investment Promotion Agencies (IPA’s) and their respective marketing techniques used in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Using an exploratory case study approach, this article addresses this research gap by exploring the role of e-government as a promotion technique in eliminating barriers to FDI inflows in Tanzania; particularly barriers related to information accessibility and bureaucratic procedures facing foreign investors in acquiring relevant licenses and business…

Cloning and expression of a type IX-like collagen in tissues of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis

2002

Collagens are highly preserved proteins in invertebrates and vertebrates. To identify the collagens in urochordates, the total RNA extracted from the pharynx of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis was hybridized with a heterologous probe specific for the echinoderm Paracentrotus lividus fibrillar type I-like larval collagen. Using this probe, two main bands (i.e. 6 and 2.8 kb mRNA) were observed on Northern blot hybridization. The cDNA library prepared from poly(A)+RNA extracted from pharyngeal tissue was screened and a cDNA that specifies a type IX-like collagen was identified. This molecule presents a conceptual open reading frame for a protein containing 734 amino acids. In particular, we sh…

Molecular characterization of an inducible p-coumaric acid decarboxylase from Lactobacillus plantarum: gene cloning, transcriptional analysis, overex…

1997

By using degenerate primers designed from the first 19 N-terminal amino acids of Lactobacillus plantarum p-coumaric acid decarboxylase (PDC), a 56-bp fragment was amplified from L. plantarum in PCRs and used as a probe for screening an L. plantarum genomic bank. Of the 2,880 clones in the genomic bank, one was isolated by colony hybridization and contained a 519-bp open reading frame (pdc gene) followed by a putative terminator structure. The pdc gene is expressed on a monocistronic transcriptional unit, which is transcribed from promoter sequences homologous to Lactococcus promoter sequences. No mRNA from pdc and no PDC activity were detected in uninduced cell extracts, indicating that the…

One gene, two transcripts: isolation of an alternative transcript encoding for the autoantigen La/SS-B from a cDNA library of a patient with primary …

1994

A cDNA library was prepared from peripheral blood lymphocytes of an autoimmune patient with primary Sjögrens' syndrome. The cDNA library was screened with the patients own autoimmune serum being monospecific for the nuclear autoantigen La/SS-B. Thereby an alternative type of La mRNA was identified that differed from the known La mRNA due to an exchange of the exon 1. Sequencing of the genomic region between the exons 1 and 2 showed that the alternative 5'-end is a part of the intron. In addition, the presence of an alternative promoter site, which exists within the intron downstream of the exon 1, became evident. In consequence, the alternative La mRNA is the result of a promoter switching …

Messenger RNA Sequencing of Rare Cell Populations in the Lung and Lung-Draining Lymph Nodes

2017

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques provide unique prospects for in-depth transcriptome analyses. Nevertheless, the emerging and still growing knowledge about the large diversity and heterogeneity of cells that participate in immunological responses in a tissue- and micromilieu-specific manner calls for advanced isolation and sequencing methods for the accurate quantification of gene expression in small cell populations and even individual cells from any organ or tissue. One of the major limitations in performing transcriptome analyses of rare cell populations was and still is quality and quantity of RNA that often limits analyses of complex mixtures of immune cell populations. Here…

Deciphering the Early Mouse Embryo Transcriptome by Low-Input RNA-Seq

2020

Early preimplantation embryos are precious and scarce samples that contain limited numbers of cells, which can be problematic for quantitative gene expression analyses. Nonetheless, low-input genome-wide techniques coupled with cDNA amplification steps have become a gold standard for RNA profiling of as minimal as a single blastomere. Here, we describe a single-cell/single-embryo RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) method, from embryo collection to sample validation steps prior to DNA library preparation and sequencing. Key quality controls and external Spike-In normalization approaches are also detailed.
