Johana Kristofa Broces (Brotze, 1742-1823) dzīvesgājums un viņa rokrakstu kolekcija LU Akadēmiskajā bibliotēkā

2013

Systematic review with meta-analysis: the haemodynamic effects of carvedilol compared with propranolol for portal hypertension in cirrhosis

2013

Summary Background Propranolol is recommended for prophylaxis of variceal bleeding in cirrhosis. Carvedilol is a nonselective beta-blocker with a mild anti-alfa-1-adrenergic activity. Several studies have compared carvedilol and propranolol, yielding inconsistent results. Aim To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomised clinical trials comparing carvedilol with propranolol for hepatic vein pressure gradient reduction. Methods Studies were searched on the MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane library databases up to November 2013. The weighted mean difference in percent hepatic vein pressure gradient reduction and the relative risk of failure to achieve a hemodynamic response (r…

Emergency sclerotherapy versus vasoactive drugs for variceal bleeding in cirrhosis

2003

Abstract Background & aims: Emergency sclerotherapy is used as a first-line therapy for variceal bleeding in cirrhosis, although pharmacologic treatment stops bleeding in most patients. We performed a meta-analysis comparing emergency sclerotherapy with pharmacologic treatment. Methods: MEDLINE (1968–2002), EMBASE (1986–2002), and the Cochrane Library (2002;4) were searched to retrieve randomized controlled trials comparing sclerotherapy with vasopressin (± nitroglycerin), terlipressin, somatostatin, or octreotide for variceal bleeding in cirrhosis. Outcome measures were failure to control bleeding, rebleeding, blood transfusions, adverse events, and mortality. Results: Fifteen trials were …

Emergency sclerotherapy versus vasoactive drugs for bleeding oesophageal varices in cirrhotic patients.

2010

Background Emergency sclerotherapy is still widely used as a first line therapy for variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis, particularly when banding ligation is not available or feasible. However, pharmacological treatment may stop bleeding in the majority of these patients. Objectives To assess the benefits and harms of emergency sclerotherapy versus vasoactive drugs for variceal bleeding in cirrhosis. Search methods Search of trials was based on The Cochrane Hepato-Biliary Group Controlled Trials Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Science Citation Index Expanded through January 2010. Selection criteri…

A Simultaneous Observation of Lightning by ASIM, Colombia-Lightning Mapping Array, GLM, and ISS-LIS

2021

The Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) on the International Space Station (ISS) provides optical radiances and images of lightning flashes in several spectral bands. This work presents a lightning flash simultaneously observed from space by ASIM, the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) and the Lightning Imaging Sensor on the International Space Station (ISS-LIS); and from ground by the Colombia-Lightning Mapping Array (Colombia-LMA). Volumetric weather radar provides reflectivity data to help to interpret the effects of the cloud particles on the observed optical features. We found that surges in radiance in the band at 777.4 nm appear to be related mostly with lightning processe…

The Engineering of a Compression Boosting Library: Theory vs Practice in BWT Compression

2006

Data Compression is one of the most challenging arenas both for algorithm design and engineering. This is particularly true for Burrows and Wheeler Compression a technique that is important in itself and for the design of compressed indexes. There has been considerable debate on how to design and engineer compression algorithms based on the BWT paradigm. In particular, Move-to-Front Encoding is generally believed to be an "inefficient " part of the Burrows-Wheeler compression process. However, only recently two theoretically superior alternatives to Move-to-Front have been proposed, namely Compression Boosting and Wavelet Trees. The main contribution of this paper is to provide the first ex…

SeroGRID: an improved method for the rapid selection of antigens with disease related immunogenicity

2003

Screening of cDNA expression libraries derived from human tumors with autologous sera (SEREX) permits the definition of immunogenic antigens in individual cancer patients. However, only a minority of SEREX-derived cDNA clones show a clear cancer-relatedness in the sense that circulating autoantibodies to them occur exclusively in the sera of tumor patients but not in healthy individuals. Evaluation of multiple SEREX-defined clones in serological assays using panels of allogeneic sera from cancer patients as well as appropriate control groups is an important step towards focussing on the relevant antigens. This in turn is the basis for defining disease parameters of diagnostic and prognostic…

The image of vegetables : speeches, representation and consumption habits in France

2018

Since the establishment of the PNNS (National Health Nutrition Program) in 2001 in France, everyone knows that we must eat vegetables daily, and from a very young age, to enjoy a balanced diet. In the country whose "gastronomic meal" was certified in 2010 by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the food culture has, for twenty years, seen its tradition based on on taste and commensality, disrupted by an increasingly functional approach to nutrition, focused on nutrition and health. The French eater is, in this context, beset by contradictory discourses on food, but which tend for the most part to make him responsible and…
