Low-energy epicardial pacing in children: the benefit of autocapture.
1999
Abstract Background . Permanent cardiac pacing in children results commonly in augmented energy consumption because of the high pacing rates and the ample stimulation safety margin applied in children. Cardiovascular anatomy and limited venous access sometimes preclude the otherwise preferred endocardial approach. In this multicenter patient series, we studied the feasibility, safety, and energy saving obtained by a combination of steroid-eluting epicardial leads with autocapture devices capable of ongoing adjustment of the stimulation output to the prevailing threshold. Methods . Autocapture devices (Pacesetter Microny SR+ and Regency SR+; Pacesetter, Solna, Sweden) and steroid-eluting epi…
Yeast Life Span and its Impact on Food Fermentations
2019
Yeasts are very important microorganisms for food production. The high fermentative capacity, mainly of the species of the genus Saccharomyces, is a key factor for their biotechnological use, particularly to produce alcoholic beverages. As viability and vitality are essential to ensure their correct performance in industry, this review addresses the main aspects related to the cellular aging of these fungi as their senescence impacts their proper functioning. Laboratory strains of S. cerevisiae have proven a very successful model for elucidating the molecular mechanisms that control life span. Those mechanisms are shared by all eukaryotic cells. S. cerevisiae has two models of aging, replic…

Should dispersers be fast learners? Modeling the role of cognition in dispersal syndromes.
2021
Abstract Both cognitive abilities and dispersal tendencies can vary strongly between individuals. Since cognitive abilities may help dealing with unknown circumstances, it is conceivable that dispersers may rely more heavily on learning abilities than residents. However, cognitive abilities are costly and leaving a familiar place might result in losing the advantage of having learned to deal with local conditions. Thus, individuals which invested in learning to cope with local conditions may be better off staying at their natal place. In order to disentangle the complex relationship between dispersal and learning abilities, we implemented individual‐based simulations. By allowing for develo…
Correlation between body size and longevity : New analysis and data covering six taxonomic classes of vertebrates
2023
Large bodied species are known to live longer than small bodied species. However, it is less clear whether the positive correlation varies across taxa. In this short communication, we combine data entries from literature and databases on body mass and maximum life span for 3722 species covering taxonomic Classes Chondrichthyes, Teleostei, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, and Mammalia. We then analyse the log(maximum life span) – log(body mass) relationship using generalized linear model with nested random intercepts and slopes for Class/Order/Family. Our analyses generally demonstrate the positive longevity – body mass relationship but also reveal that slopes and intercepts differ slightly among a…
Data from: Replicated origin of female biased adult sex ratio in introduced populations of the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata).
2014
There are many theoretical and empirical studies explaining variation in offspring sex ratio but relatively few that explain variation in adult sex ratio. Adult sex ratios are important because biased sex ratios can be a driver of sexual selection and will reduce effective population size which affects population persistence and shapes how populations respond to natural selection. Previous work on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) gives mixed results, usually showing a female-biased adult sex ratio. However a detailed analysis showed that this bias varied dramatically throughout a year and with no consistent sex-bias. We used a mark-recapture approach to examine the origin and consistency of fe…
Hämatologische Studien an der Röntgenbestrahlten Rattenmilz
1964
Hypertension in Children and Adolescents
2019
During the last few decades, hypertension in children and adolescents has gained ground in cardiovascular medicine, thanks to the progress made in several areas of pathophysiological and clinical research. The prevalence in school-aged children appears to be increasing, perhaps as a result of the increased prevalence of obesity in the last years. Despite evidence of an increasing prevalence of hypertension in the young, the consequences of early onset hypertension are poorly established and often overlooked. In children hypertension can be caused by multiple conditions, and therefore it is warranted to consider a wide range of differential diagnoses and to search for definable causes of hyp…
Clinical Features and Natural History of AMD on OCT
2009
Despite recent progress, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains the leading cause of vision loss in high-income countries, and its incidence appears to be increasing, probably due to longer life span and improved methods of detection.
INDOVINA CHI VIENE A CENA? QUESTIONI PSICO-SOCIO-GIURIDICHE NEL CICLO DI VITA DELLA COPPIA MISTA
2013
