Associations between Students’ Perceptions of the Psychosocial School Environment and Indicators of Subjective Health in Finnish Comprehensive Schools

The study examined how far students’ perceptions of the psychosocial school environment are associated with self‐rated health, life satisfaction and subjective health complaints. Students’ perceptions were associated with one or more indicators of subjective health. Perceived health was better in direct proportion to positive perceptions. Student relations and school strain were the factors that stood out in both genders, with regard to all the health indicators. School engagement, parental support and educational aspiration were found to be important for overall perceived health of the students. This article analyzes whether migrants’ distress factors are reduced, and life satisfaction increased by the sense of community and support from friendship or family networks, with age and length of residence serving as co-variables. Host country, gender, migration (economic/non-economic), employment (employed/unemployed) and legal status (regulated/unregulated) were all treated as moderating variables. Internationalization and Faculty Well-Being in Liberal Arts Colleges: An Often Neglected Issue in East Asia

In this chapter, we discuss the issues of faculty well-being in higher education and in particular, in the liberal arts colleges of East Asia. In so doing, we draw on the extant psychosocial models of well-being. We then examine and discuss the findings of a recent faculty survey conducted in Japanese colleges whose goal was to tap into faculty members’ perceptions of their institutions’ policies and their own teaching and research regarding internationalization and liberal arts education. In the final section of the chapter, we make some recommendations for policies that will promote faculty well-being in East Asian liberal arts colleges.

This chapter aims to describe Latin-American studies on well-being from two different perspectives: the hedonic (life satisfaction, positive and negative emotions) and the eudaimonic (psychological well-being) traditions. An analysis of research articles published between 1998 and 2012 was conducted. The introduced key words were: happiness, life satisfaction and well-being and the search was limited by language of publication restricted to Spanish and Portuguese. This chapter describes the development and adaptation of instruments to assess Positive Psychology’s constructs in Latin America. Results from the conducted literature review are presented according to PP pillars, as proposed by Seligman: positive emotions, positive traits, positive institutions and positive relationships. The criteria used to analyze the assessment instruments found included country’s contribution, number of tests locally developed vs adapted tests, psychometric properties of assessment instruments and theoretical models in which tests are grounded.
