Perceived overqualification, relative deprivation, and person-centric outcomes: The moderating role of career centrality

2018

Abstract In this study, we develop and test a model examining why and when perceived overqualification relates to career satisfaction and subjective well-being. In a sample of 143 new university graduates in Spain with data collected across two time periods, we showed that perceived overqualification interacted with career centrality to predict relative deprivation, which in turn was related to lower career satisfaction, positive affect, and life satisfaction, as well as higher negative affect. Further, perceived overqualification had negative main effects on career satisfaction, negative affect, and life satisfaction. The results suggest the importance of perceived overqualification for we…

Family-supportive organization perceptions, multiple dimensions of work–family conflict, and employee satisfaction : a test of model across five samp…

2008

Work-family conflict (WFC) is recognized as a major issue affecting both individual employees and their employers. Preliminary research shows that the more employees perceive their work environment as family-supportive, the less they experience WFC (Allen, 2001). Moreover, there are theoretical and empirical reasons to expect that by reducing WFC, a family-supportive work environment would enhance employees’ satisfaction with their job, family, and life in general. In addition, despite the impressive body of research that has been devoted to WFC, there have been few studies that have assessed WFC as a multidimensional construct, other than those that distinguish between directions of confli…

Job attitudes, behaviours and well-being among different types of temporary workers in Europe and Israel

2011

Applying an innovative typology based on preference for temporary em- ployment and perceived employability, the authors empirically examine four types of temporary workers (and a group of permanent workers for comparison). In a sample of 1,300 employees from six countries, they find significant differences between the four types on a broad set of variables - including demographic and job characteristics, attitude and insecurity - but not in life satisfaction and well-being. They conclude with an argument against the equation of temporary employment with low-skilled workers unable to find a permanent job, stressing the valuable implications of more sensitive research for policy-making on fle…

Using a Multidimensional Measure of Resilience to Explain Life Satisfaction and Academic Achievement of Adults With Reading Difficulties.

2014

We assessed the impact of intrapersonal and interpersonal resilience, persistence, and number of difficulties in addition to reading problems on life satisfaction (general, social, and self) and academic achievement. A total of 120 adults with reading difficulties who either were completing a university degree or were recent graduates responded to an in-lab or online survey. Results indicated that intrapersonal resilience correlated positively with interpersonal resilience and persistence, and both resilience factors were negatively associated with number of difficulties. Using structural equation modeling, intrapersonal resilience explained general satisfaction, intrapersonal resilience a…

Predicting life satisfaction in Angolan elderly: the moderating effect of gender

2014

Quality of Life in Argentina

2011

This chapter describes results of several research projects developed by the author studying the changes in the level of satisfaction with quality of life of people in Argentina. The research was conducted from 2002 to 2010. The chapter begins with the results of the first research project developed immediately after the national political, economic, and social crisis that besieged the whole country in 2001, and extends to the last survey that took place in 2010. In 2002, 2003, and 2005, the survey applied the Well-Being Index (Cummins et al. 2001). Arbeitssituation und Mitarbeiterzufriedenheit in einem Universitätsklinikum: Entwicklung von Messinstrumenten für ärztliches und pflegerisches Person…

2005

Aim of the present work was to develop scales for the description of the work situation of physicians and nurses. For this purpose a sample of n = 447 physicians and n = 920 nurses of an University Hospital filled out a new conception work situation questionnaire. Further on they got the subscales work and profession and financial situation of the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (FLZ). After Principle Component Analysis and item analyses we could develop four work situation scales similar for both groups, the physicians and the nurses: 1. chief and hierarchy, 2. conflict ability of the team, 3. work conditions at the ward and 4. cooperation of the professions. The internal consistencies are…

Changes in mental health during three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic: a repeated cross-sectional study among Polish university students

2021

Abstract Background Research indicates that mental health worsened during the Coronavirus crisis, in particular among women and university students. However, few longitudinal studies have so far investigated the changes in mental health outcomes across three subsequent waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this study aims to examine changes in mental health among university students. Methods A total of 1,961university students from Poland, at mean age 23.23 years (SD = 3.16, 57.47% of women) were included in this repeated cross-sectional study across three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic: W1 (n = 657), W2 (n = 654), and W3 (n = 650). They completed the online survey with the Generalized…

Motivational Antecedents of Well-Being and Health Related Behaviors in Adolescents

2017

Abstract Grounded in the Achievement Goal Theory framework of motivation and optimal functioning, there were two objectives of this study: (a) to test a model hypothesizing links between personal theories of school achievement, indices of the quality of academic engagement, wellbeing, and health-related behaviors, and (b) to explore whether the hypothesized model was invariant across gender groups. A multisection questionnaire pack tapping the targeted variables was administered to 967 teenagers (475 boys and 492 girls) aged between 11 to 16 years old. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that Task theory of achievement predicted positively satisfaction in school and negatively bo…
