In this paper, we outline a theoretical account of the relationship between technology and human musicality. An enactive and biocultural position is adopted that assumes a close coevolutionary relationship between the two. From this position, we aim at clarifying how the present and emerging technologies, becoming embedded and embodied in our lifeworld, inevitably co-constitute and transform musical practices, skills, and ways of making sense of music. Therefore, as a premise of our scrutiny, we take it as a necessity to more deeply understand the ways that humans become affiliated to the ever-changing instruments of music technology, in order to better understand the coevolutionary impact …

Europe and the Oblivion of the World. From Husserl to Patocka

2016

At the beginning of August 1934, while spending his holidays in the Black Forest, Husserl received an invitation from the Prague-based Cercle philosophique pour les recherches sur l’entendement humain to contribute to the International Philosophical Congress that was to be held a month later in the capital of Czechoslovakia with a paper addressing the question of ‘the present task of philosophy’. Husserl responded favourably to this request and submitted a paper on 30 August 1934. However, numerous typing mistakes as well as a certain dissatisfaction with regard to the content – ‘Das Ganze ist unfertig’ [the whole is unfinished], as he puts it in an letter from 13 September – led him to ask…

The Rise and Fall of the Aizjomi Landscape†

2012

Jurmalciems, an ancient fishing-farming village on the Baltic Sea coast in southwestern Latvia, provides the setting for this article. In this setting I focus on the notion of dwelling in a landscape that comes to reflect the residents' lifeworld. The holistic notion of "dwelling" incorporates the complex and multiple dimensions of human life spent in the physical landscape, where time and space, nature and culture, are bound together and where local and macrolevel historical and social circumstances determine them both. This study is my attempt to understand a visible reality: the aizjonii landscape that is etched into the topography in the form of fields carved and embosomed into sandbank…

Beauty and the Cosmetic Secret

2018

Cosmetic surgery is often linked to the perception that women who resort to cosmetic interventions to alter their physical appearance are vain, superficial, and narcissistic. Few investigations have acknowledged and explored the individual’s personal motivations and experiences of her action and choice with regards to aesthetic surgery. By focusing on subjective experience, alternative insights can be gained on the cosmetic procedure(s) and on how their reshaped body influences an individual’s lifeworld experience. The article explores the perceived benefits and consequences of reshaping, enhancing, and/or reducing a perceived flaw or shortcoming of the body. From this exploration the focus…

Between constitution and interpretation: Identity as history

2015

The paper focuses on the possibilities to constitute meaning in the „borderline- situations“ (Jaspers) of the social sphere, such as the loss of validity of orientation within and experience of reality in the socially shared structures of the lifeworld. On the one hand, I will refer to A. Schutz’ and his constitution-analysis of foreign understanding and of shared meaning; on the other hand, I bear onto I. Kertesz literary project to narrate the biography of an Auschwitz-survivor as close to his experiential perspective as possible. I will focus both on the concept of constitution and of interpretation with respect to their enabling of the transcending of a typologized everyday’s world whic…

Young athletes’ significant experiences in sport : critical sociological reflections on athlete development

2017

AbstractThe aim of this article is to provide a sociological perspective on athlete development by using the theoretical framework of socialization and life course. Significant experiences are used as an interpretational tool to study young athletes’ perceptions of their socialization process. The research data, which were collected at a sports upper secondary school, consist of life historical interviews with 26 young athletes aged 14–17 years. Through content analysis, their significant experiences in sports were divided into four categories and then analyzed further in relation to the Habermasian dualistic reality of the lifeworld and the system. The results were the following. First, no…

Being hospitalized with a newly diagnosed chronic illness - A phenomenological study of children’s lifeworld in the hospital

2012

The impact of a hospital environment on children has rarely been investigated. Recently, however, the perspective of hospitalized children has been taken into account. Being hospitalized and facing an illness represent a dramatic change in a child’s daily life, and the quality of the environment may influence the child’s experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of children being hospitalized with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes and to obtain an increased understanding of the environmental influences on the children’s lifeworld. The study used a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The design is a combination of observation of the participant, interviews, and p…
