Improvement of the low energy neutrino factory

2010

The low energy neutrino factory has been proposed as a very sensitive setup for future searches for CP violation and matter effects. Here we study how its performance is affected when the experimental specifications of the setup are varied. Most notably, we have considered the addition of the "platinum'' nu(mu) -> nu(e) channel. We find that, while theoretically the extra channel provides very useful complementary information and helps to lift degeneracies, its practical usefulness is lost when considering realistic background levels. Conversely, an increase in statistics in the "golden'' nu(mu) -> nu(e) channel and, to some extent, an improvement in the energy resolution, lead to an import…

High Antiferromagnetic Domain Wall Velocity Induced by Néel Spin-Orbit Torques.

2016

We demonstrate the possibility to drive an antiferromagnetic domain wall at high velocities by fieldlike Neel spin-orbit torques. Such torques arise from current-induced local fields that alternate their orientation on each sublattice of the antiferromagnet and whose orientation depends primarily on the current direction, giving them their fieldlike character. The domain wall velocities that can be achieved by this mechanism are 2 orders of magnitude greater than the ones in ferromagnets. This arises from the efficiency of the staggered spin-orbit fields to couple to the order parameter and from the exchange-enhanced phenomena in antiferromagnetic texture dynamics, which leads to a low doma…

Comparison of piezosurgery and conventional rotary instruments in schneider’s membrane sinus lifting: A pilot randomized trial

2020

Background The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the postoperative effects of the piezoelectric device and conventional rotary instruments in Schneider’s membrane sinus lifting procedure. Material and Methods Twenty patients requiring bilateral maxillary bone graft augmentation in the posterior maxillary region were selected. Piezoelectric surgery was performed on one side and conventional surgery with a rotary diamond bur on the other. Postoperative pain, swelling, edema, and mouth opening were evaluated at one hour and two and seven days after the procedures. All variables were submitted to Friedman or Wilcoxon tests at a 5% significance level. Results The comparison between gro…

Ergonomic Indicators and Physical Workload Risks in Food Production and Possibilities for Risk Prevention

2021

The food industry is the most important and largest manufacturing industry in Latvia, producing almost a third of all manufacturing output. Employees in a food production enterprises are exposed to a variety of ergonomic risks: monotonous work movements that can be repeated up to 1000 times a day, overloads that exceeds 30 kg in lifting and moving operations, forced working postures, fast work pace. The aim of the study was to identify ergonomic indicators related to physical load for packers in one medium-sized company producing potato starch in Latvia. When summarizing the results of the survey on burden-lifting rates, it should be noted that, in a shift, 30% of packers lift the burden fr…

On the topology of surfaces with the generalised simple lift property.

2020

In this paper, we study the geometry of surfaces with the generalised simple lift property. This work generalises previous results by Bernstein and Tinaglia, and it is motivated by the fact that leaves of a minimal lamination obtained as a limit of a sequence of properly embedded minimal disks satisfy the generalised simple lift property.

Biorthogonal Wavelet Transforms Originating from Discrete and Discrete-Time Splines

2018

This chapter describes how to generate families of biorthogonal wavelet transforms in spaces of periodic signals using prediction p-filters originating from discrete-time and discrete splines. The transforms are generated by the lifting scheme (Sweldens (Wavelet applications in signal and image processing III, vol 2569, 1995, [7]), Sweldens (Appl Comput Harmon Anal 3:186–200, 1996, [8]), Sweldens (SIAM J Math Anal 29:511–546, 1997, [9]), see also Sect. 7.1 of this volume). The discrete-time wavelets related to those transforms are (anti)symmetric, well localized in time domain and have flat spectra. These families comprise wavelets with any number of local discrete vanishing moments (LDVMs)…

The lift computation for an oscillating flat plate in incompressible potential flow

1994

The initial aim of this work was the estimation of the lift acting on a flat plate performing small oscillations in a plane uniform stream by means of a simplified model based on one or at the most two lumped vortices, and the assessment of its results by comparison to those that were exact. The model was found to work well up to a reduced frequency of about 1 or 2, above which the results diverged from those that were correct. In order to improve the model, its behaviour at very high frequencies was then investigated, discovering: (i) that if the number of lumped vortices is greater than one the possibility to impose all boundary conditions is subject to certain geometrical constraints; (i…

Extensible Wind Tower

2014

The diffusion of wind energy generators is restricted by their strong landscape impact. The PERIMA project is about the development of an extensible wind tower able to support a wind machine for several hundred kW at its optimal working height, up to more than 50 m. The wind tower has a telescopic structure, made by several tubes located inside each other with their axis in vertical direction. The lifting force is given by a jack-up system confined inside a shaft, drilled below the ground level. In the retracted tower configuration, at rest, tower tubes are hidden in the foundation of the telescopic structure, located below the ground surface, and the wind machine is the only emerging part …

Reply to comment by C. Morhange, C. Flaux, P.A. Pirazzoli, M.B. Carre on “Holocene Sea level Change in Malta”

2013

The pits of Birzebbugia are located near the present-day mean sea level, and some are partially submerged. They were dated using pottery discovered in an archaeological site close to the coast, dated to the Bronze Age (Zammit, 1928; Abela, 1999). As they have been interpreted as sites for the retting of flax, during their utilization they should have remained dry and the sea could not submerge them. This is the reason why these structures are not directly related to the sea level, as suggested by Biolchi et al. (2011), so they represent an upper limit.

Effects of strength training on muscle power and serum hormones in middle-aged and older men.

2001

Effects of 16-wk strength training on maximal strength and power performance of the arm and leg muscles and serum concentrations [testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), and cortisol] were examined in 11 middle-aged (M46; 46 ± 2 yr) and 11 older men (M64; 64 ± 2 yr). During the 16-wk training, the relative increases in maximal strength and muscle power output of the arm and leg muscles were significant in both groups ( P < 0.05–0.001), with no significant differences between the two groups. The absolute increases were higher ( P < 0.01–0.05) in M46 than in M64 mainly during the last 8 wk of training. No significant changes were observed for serum T and FT concentrations. Analysis o…
