Response of periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine: a pilot histological study on humans.
2018
Background The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time the histological response of human periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine. Methods Six patients scheduled for implant full-arch rehabilitation were randomly assigned to one of the two test groups: MTA or Biodentine treatment. For each patient, two teeth scheduled for strategic extraction were randomly assigned either to the test or to the control treatment. A lateral perforation was drilled on the root and either repaired with MTA/Biodentine or filled with gutta-percha(control). Three months later, the teeth were extracted along with the coronal third of the alveolar bone and a portion of gingiva…
Avoiding tunnel collisions between fibular collateral ligament and ACL posterolateral bundle reconstruction
2010
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of tunnel collisions of the fibular collateral ligament (FCL) and posterolateral bundle anterior cruciate ligament (PLB-ACL) tunnels during a combined FCL and double-dundle (DB) ACL reconstruction. METHODS: Thirty-six 4th-generation synthetic femurs (Sawbones, Pacific Research Laboratories, Vashon, WA) were utilized, and two different femur sizes were used. A FCL tunnel and a PLB-ACL tunnel were reamed on each femur. The tunnels of synthetic specimens that did not have a collision were filled with an epoxy resin augmented with BaSO(4) and radiographic evaluation, and Multidetector CT exams of the specimens were performed. RESULTS: …
How to avoid collision between PCL and MCL femoral tunnels during a simultaneous reconstruction.
2014
PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to assess the risk of femoral tunnel collisions between the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tunnels during a simultaneous PCL and MCL reconstruction. METHODS: Fourth generation medium and large synthetic femur bones were used. On each femur, a MCL tunnel and a PCL tunnel were reamed. The MCL tunnel was drilled at 0°, 20° and 40° of axial and coronal angulations. The PCL femoral tunnel was reamed to simulate two different tunnel directions that could be obtained through an inside-out and outside-in technique. Tunnels were filled with epoxy resin augmented with BaSO4, and a multidetector CT examination of…
Immunohistochemical investigation on the pattern of vimentin expression in regenerated and intact monkey and human periodontal ligament.
2003
The expression of vimentin is well documented in the intact animal and human periodontal ligament (PDL), but there is limited information on the pattern of vimentin expression in the regenerated PDL. The aim of the present study was to investigate the pattern of vimentin expression in the regenerated and intact monkey and human PDL. A total of 12 chronic recession-type defects were created in three monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) and treated either with guided tissue regeneration (GTR), or with an enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD). After 5 months, the animals were sacrificed and specimens containing the defects and surrounding tissues were dissected free, decalcified in EDTA and embedded…
Effect of diode laser irradiation on the attachment rate of periodontal ligament cells: an in vitro study.
2001
The present study is part of a basic research program investigating the cellular effects of an 810 nm GaAlAs-diode laser on human periodontal tissues. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the effects of laser treatment of root surface specimens on the attachment of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in vitro.Root specimens were prepared from periodontally diseased teeth. PDL cells were obtained from human third molar ligaments. Cells were cultured under simple, standardized, and reproducible experimental conditions. One hundred fifty root specimens were scaled and root planed with curets followed by air-powder abrasive treatment; 75 were then lased and 75 served as controls. The irrad…
Application of T-Thesys Therapy in post-operative recovery in knee-surgical interventions: A case study
2020
T-Thesys therapy is an innovative treatment that can be used even in the presence of recent injuries. For this reason, we studied the T-Thesys use in the post-operative phase of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction of the knee. For our study, we selected 51 patients for ACL surgery, and we divided participants in two groups: the Experimental Group (EG) and the Control Group (CG). The EG consisted of 34 patients (age: 26.9 ± 7.65 years) who underwent T-Thesys therapy after surgery, while the CG included 17 patients (age: 26.7 ± 6.8 years) who was not subjected to T-Thesys therapy after surgery. T-Thesys therapy was performed on a daily basis and participants' parameters were m…
COX-2 expression in the guinea pig cochlea is partly altered by moderate sound exposure.
2006
The cyclooxygenase-2 isoform (COX-2) was found recently to be constitutively expressed in the guinea pig inner ear. To gain knowledge about its role in sound perception, alterations in the COX-2 level of moderate noise-stimulated cochleae were determined. Staining intensities were quantified in different regions using an immunohistochemical staining procedure and computer-assisted system. After 70 dB and 90 dB noise exposure for 1 h at 8000 Hz, COX-2 downregulation was observed in the organ of Corti, which was most prominent in Deiters' cells near Hensen cells and outer hair cells. In pillar cells, COX-2 levels were only slightly reduced after 70 dB but strongly diminished after 90 dB expos…
Influence of E-smoking liquids on human periodontal ligament fibroblasts.
2014
Introduction: Over the last years, electronic cigarettes (ECs) have become more popular, particularly in individuals who want to give up smoking tobacco. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of the different e-smoking liquids on the viability and proliferation of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts. Method and materials: For this study six test solutions with components from ECs were selected: lime-, hazelnut- and menthol-flavored liquids, nicotine, propylene glycol, and PBS as control group. The fibroblasts were incubated up to 96 h with the different liquids, and cell viability was measured by using the PrestoBlue® reagent, the ATP detection and the migration assay.…
Prevalence of morphological and structural changes in the stylohyoid chain
2020
Background Total or partial calcification of the stylohyoid chain, elongation of the stylohyoid process of the temporal bone and/or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament are usually incidental radiographic findings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of morphological and structural changes within the stylohyoid chain in 4413 digital panoramic radiographs. Material and methods The images were evaluated for the presence or absence of changes in the stylohyoid chain by a specialist in dentofacial radiology and the information collected comprised gender, age, side, right and left measurements and classification of the chain side elongated or calcified stylohyoid process…
The treatment of scaphoid non-unions with partial and total scaphoid in titanium custom-made 3D-printed prostheses and reconstruction of scapholunate…
2021
ABSTRACTThe treatment of sequelae of scaphoid fractures is still one of the unsolved problems of hand surgery. Between January 2019 and July 2020 in the Hand Surgery Department of San Paolo’s Hospital in Savona (Italy) 9 partial scaphoid in titanium custom-made 3D-printed prosthesis have performed in 9 patients (all men) with an average age of 27.5 years (minimum 18-maximum 37 years). The aim of the study is to evaluate over time the clinical-functional and radiographic results of the wrists treated with partial and total scaphoid titanium custom-made 3D-printed prostheses and reconstruction of SLIL.
