Microduplications At 22q11.21 are Associated with Classic Bladder Exstrophy

2010

Purpose Classic exstrophy of the bladder (CBE) is part of the exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC), a spectrum of urogenital anomalies in which part or all of the distal urinary tract fails to close. Familial occurrence has been observed, and previous studies have suggested an underlying multifactorial mode of inheritance. To date, no causative genetic or non-genetic factor has been unequivocally identified in humans. The present study aimed to identify microaberrations characterized by loss or gain of genomic material that contribute to the EEC at a genome-wide level. Material and Methods Molecular karyotyping, utilizing 549,839 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with an average spacing …

Reliability of Restriction Enzyme Digestions of Genomic DNA for the Generation of DNA Fingerprints

1991

Since minisatellite DNA probes are used for the detection of hypervariable loci in eucaryotic genomes [1] the application of so called DNA fingerprints and DNA technology itself in paternity testing and forensic casework is critically discussed ([3]; Brinkmann et al., this volume). A particular problem is the possibility of obtaining partially digested genomic DNA in casework after treatment with restriction enzymes leading to inconclusive or even false results. This is even more important when multilocus DNA probes are used, since the total number of fragments in a given person is not known in advance. But also with single locus probes, where only two allelic fragments are usually detected…

Imaging-guided interventions modulating portal venous flow: Evidence and controversies

2021

Portal hypertension is defined by an increase in the portosystemic venous gradient. In most cases, increased resistance to portal blood flow is the initial cause of elevated portal pressure. More than 90% of cases of portal hypertension are estimated to be due to advanced chronic liver disease or cirrhosis. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts, a non-pharmacological treatment for portal hypertension, involve the placement of a stent between the portal vein and the hepatic vein or inferior vena cava which helps bypass hepatic resistance. Portal hypertension may also be a result of extrahepatic portal vein thrombosis or compression. In these cases, percutaneous portal vein recanalis…

Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification detection of an unknown large deletion of the CREB-binding protein gene in a patient with Rubinstein…

2013

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant congenital disorder characterized by postnatal growth retardation, psychomotor developmental delay, skeletal anomalies, peculiar facial morphology, and tumorigenesis. Mutations in the gene encoding the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB, also known as CREBBP or CBP) on chromosome 16p13.3 have been identified. In addition, some patients with low intelligence quotients and autistic features bear large deletions. Based on these observations, we used multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification to search for large deletions affecting the CREBBP gene in a Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome patient. We identified a novel heterozygote dele…

Timing effect of intramyocardial hydrogel injection for positively impacting left ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction

2015

Intramyocardial injection of various injectable hydrogel materials has shown benefit in positively impacting the course of left ventricular (LV) remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI). However, since LV remodeling is a complex, time dependent process, the most efficacious time of hydrogel injection is not clear. In this study, we injected a relatively stiff, thermoresponsive and bioabsorbable hydrogel in rat hearts at 3 different time points - immediately after MI (IM), 3 d post-MI (3D), and 2 w post-MI (2W), corresponding to the beginnings of the necrotic, fibrotic and chronic remodeling phases. The employed left anterior descending coronary artery ligation model showed expected infar…

Predicting Social Distancing Intention and Behavior During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Integrated Social Cognition Model.

2020

Abstract Background Social distancing is a key behavior to minimize COVID-19 infections. Identification of potentially modifiable determinants of social distancing behavior may provide essential evidence to inform social distancing behavioral interventions. Purpose The current study applied an integrated social cognition model to identify the determinants of social distancing behavior, and the processes involved, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In a prospective correlational survey study, samples of Australian (N = 365) and U.S. (N = 440) residents completed online self-report measures of social cognition constructs (attitude, subjective norm, moral norm, anticipated regret…
