A comparison of the effects of bilateral efferent duct ligation and of partial epididymectomy on the testes of rats.
1990
Testis weight as a percentage of body weight did not change following bilateral ligation of the efferent ducts (EDL) close to the epididymis, whereas following removal of part of the epididymis between the site of ligation and a point close to the junction between the caput and corpus (PCE), testis weight first rose linearly until Day 4 and then showed an exponential decrease between Days 4 and 28. After EDL, the perimeter of the seminiferous tubules rose for the first 7 days and then remained elevated, whereas after PCE, there was a linear decrease between Days 4 and 28. Following EDL, the percentage of altered and degenerated tubular cross-sections rose to about 30% and 10%, respectively,…
Evidence for the existence of FGFR1-5-HT1A heteroreceptor complexes in the midbrain raphe 5-HT system.
2015
The ascending midbrain 5-HT neurons known to contain 5-HT1A autoreceptors may be dysregulated in depression due to a reduced trophic support. With in situ proximity ligation assay (PLA) and supported by co-location of the FGFR1 and 5-HT1A immunoreactivities in midbrain raphe 5-HT cells, evidence for the existence of FGFR1–5-HT1A heteroreceptor complexes were obtained in the dorsal and median raphe nuclei of the Sprague–Dawley rat. Their existence in the rat medullary raphe RN33B cell cultures was also established. After combined FGF-2 and 8-OH-DPAT treatment, a marked and significant increase in PLA positive clusters was found in the RN33B cells. Similar results were reached upon coactivati…
Terminal or truncal ligation of the inferior thyroid artery during thyroidectomy? A prospective randomized trial.
2016
Abstract Introduction Thyroidectomy is a common procedure in general and endocrine surgery. The technique of ligation of inferior thyroid artery (ITA) has been invoked as a possible cause of appearance of postoperative hypocalcemia. Methods We performed a prospective randomized study involving 184 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy to evaluate the differences of truncal ligation versus distal ligation of ITA in terms of postoperative hypocalcemia, vocal fold palsy, voice and swallowing impairment. The patients were divided into group A (trunk ligation of ITA) and group B (terminal branches ligation of ITA). Results We evaluated postoperative PTH and calcemia (immediate, 6 and 12 months…
[Penile Flexiflate® Surgitek prosthesis explant and simultaneous three-component hydraulic Titan® Alpha 1 prosthesis implantation, with double incisi…
2010
Introduction and Objectives We treated a 45 years old patient, suffering from diabetes mellitus since childhood, with retinal, neurovascular and kidney complications. In 1988, for erectile dysfunction (ED) resistant to medical injective treatment, the patient underwent ligation of the dorsal vein of the penis without any result. In 1989 a Flexiflate® hydraulic prosthesis was implanted with resolution of ED. In 2005 the patient underwent simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant with a trans-laparotomic approach for end stage renal disease and diabetes mellitus. In 2009, because of the Flexiflate® Surgitek malfunction, the patient underwent explantation of the Flexiflate® prosthesis and si…
Emergency sclerotherapy or band ligation combined with vasoactive drugs for bleeding esophageal varices in cirrhosis
2019
This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: To assess the efficacy as well as adverse events of emergency sclerotherapy (or band ligation) combined with pharmacological treatments versus sclerotherapy (or band ligation) alone or vasoactive drugs alone for acute variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients based on the results of randomised clinical trials (RCTs).
Chemical Ligation and Isotope Labeling to Locate Dynamic Effects during Catalysis by Dihydrofolate Reductase.
2015
Abstract Chemical ligation has been used to alter motions in specific regions of dihydrofolate reductase from E. coli and to investigate the effects of localized motional changes on enzyme catalysis. Two isotopic hybrids were prepared; one with the mobile N‐terminal segment containing heavy isotopes (2H, 13C, 15N) and the remainder of the protein with natural isotopic abundance, and the other one with only the C‐terminal segment isotopically labeled. Kinetic investigations indicated that isotopic substitution of the N‐terminal segment affected only a physical step of catalysis, whereas the enzyme chemistry was affected by protein motions from the C‐terminal segment. QM/MM studies support th…
Site-specific incorporation of perylene into an N-terminally modified light-harvesting complex II.
2010
Employing the utility of the native chemical ligation, site-specific attachment of an ultrastable perylene dye to a derivative of the major light-harvesting complex (LHCII) was demonstrated. Biochemical analysis of the conjugate indicated that the structure and function of LHCII remain largely unaffected by the N-terminal modification.
The Implementation of the Directive on Tax Intermediaries in Spain (DAC6)
2019
The paper analyzes with criticism the riks, challenges and doubts that may arise as a result of the implementation of the DAC6 directive, relating to the obligation of tax intermediaries to disclose information on certain tax schemes to the tax administration at the moment of assistance and implementation of the scheme. It reveals the inconsistencies and the potential break of some fundamental freedoms of taxpayers and intermediaries and suggests mechanisms, tips and tools to improve it.
The Italian regulation of public procurement contracts and the prevention of money laundering in pandemic times
2023
This paper aims to explain the peculiarities of Italian public procurement contracts and the remedies provided to prevent money laundering and other criminal activities related to the unlawful interference in these relationships between private economic operators and public entities. The analysis starts from the examination of public subjects, their role and mode of action according to the Italian legal system, with particular attention to the discipline of public procurement contracts and the connected money laundering risks. Due to the peculiarity of the economical relationships involved, of the parties and of the subject, these contracts, are mostly regulated by a Decree, called Code of …
