Terminal ligature of inferior thyroid arterhy branches during total thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter is associated with higher postoperative cal…

2010

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of truncal versus terminal branch ligature of the inferior thyroid artery (ITA) on postoperative calcium and PTH plasma levels in patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter. Methods: A prospective randomized study was performed comparing a group of patients that underwent either truncal ligature of the ITA (group 1) or terminal ligature of ITA branches (group 2). Results: A series of 126 consecutive patients with non-toxic euthyroid multinodular goiter underwent total thyroidectomy. Truncal ligature of the ITA was performed in 63 patients (group 1) and terminal branch ITA ligature in 63 patients (group 2). Postoperative ionized serum calc…

Adrenalectomy for Bilateral and Recurrent Pheochromocytoma: Increased Intraoperative Risk?

2006

Adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma is per se associated with a specific intraoperative cardiovascular risk caused by catecholamine secretion during manipulation of the tumor. Bilateral or multiple, and recurrent chromaffine tumors are special subentities with a potentially more intensified and longer surgical preparation. The aim of our study was to examine these effects on hemodynamic changes compared with those observed for primary, solitary tumors. Of the 82 studied interventions between February 1992 and May 2005, 58 were seen to involve primary, unilateral tumors, 17 involved bilateral (1 trilateral) findings, and there were 7 cases of recurrency. The hemodynamic changes related to pri…

CARATTERIZZAZIONE DELL’ATTRITO SU COMPONENTI PER APPLICAZIONI ORTODONTICHE MEDIANTE UN SIMULATORE “IN VITRO”

2010

The role of Doppler ultrasonography in determining the proper surgical approach to the management of varicocele in children and adolescents

2006

In a study from Italy, colour-Doppler ultrasonography was a reliable diagnostic tool in the preoperative assessment of patients with varicocele. The authors also found that it helped to distinguish those who could be treated laparoscopically from those who should be treated by microsurgical subinguinal ligature. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether colour Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) is a reliable diagnostic tool for selecting patients with varicocele to undergo either laparoscopy or open microsurgical subinguinal ligation. PATIENTS AND METHODS In a 3-year period, 42 boys affected by left varicocele were evaluated before surgery by inguinal and scrotal CDUS. Using this method it was possible …

Effect of implant placement depth on the peri-implant bone defect configurations in ligature-induced peri-implantitis : an experimental study in dogs

2018

Background The subcrestal placement of implant platform has been considered a key factor in the preservation of crestal bone, but the influence of implant placement depth on bone remodeling combined with peri-implantitis is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the crestal or subcrestal placement of implants on peri-implant bone defects of ligature-induced peri-implantitis in dogs. Material and Methods Eight weeks after tooth extraction in six beagle dogs, two different types of implants (A: OsseoSpeed™, Astra, Mölndal, Sweden; B: Integra-CP™, Bicon, Boston, USA) were placed at either crestal or subcrestal (-1.5 mm) positions on one side of the mandible. Li…

Gastric control of duodenal electric activity--the function of the gastroduodenal junction.

1975

An investigation was made into the links between electric activity of antral and of duodeno-jejunal musculature in different functional conditions. The function of the gastroduodenal junction in this linking mechanism was analysed. The following observations were made: (a) in the absence of gastric stimulation, the slow electric activities of stomach and duodenum appear to be completely independent; (b) the gastroduodenal junction evidences no electric activity of its own but is affected by that of the two adjacent structures; (c) chemical stimulation of the gastric mucosa causes activation of the electric and mechanical activity of the stomach and analogous activation of duodenal musculatu…

Deep vein thrombus formation induced by flow reduction in mice is determined by venous side branches.

2013

Interaction between vascular wall abnormalities, inflammatory leukocytes, platelets, coagulation factors and hemorheology in the pathogenesis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is incompletely understood, requiring well defined animal models of human disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: We subjected male C57BL/6 mice to ligation of the inferior vena cava (IVC) as a flow reduction model to induce DVT. Thrombus size and weight were analyzed macroscopically and sonographically by B-mode, pulse wave (pw) Doppler and power Doppler imaging (PDI) using high frequency ultrasound. Thrombus size varied substantially between individual procedures and mice, irrespective of the flow reduction achieved by the ligatu…
