Nanoparticle Vesicles Through Self Assembly of Cyclodextrin- and Adamantyl-Modified Silica

2010

Stable nanoparticle vesicles were for the first time prepared from adamantyl- and cyclodextrin (CD)-modified silica nanoparticles forming host-guest interactions in aqueous solution. Adamantyl-functionalized nanoparticles were obtained from thiol-isocyanate reaction of thiol-modified nanoparticles with 1-adamantyl isocyanate. The CD modified silica particles were isolated from a reaction of mono-6-para-toluenesulfonyl-β-cyclodextrin with the thiol functionalized silica under microwave conditions in basic media. The obtained particles were characterized in respect of agglomeration and self-assembly behavior in aqueous solution by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy.…

Interaction of pHPMA–pLMA Copolymers with Human Blood Serum and Its Components

2013

Immediately after administration, polymer therapeutics are exposed to complex biological media like blood which may influence and alter their physicochemical properties due to interactions with proteins or serum components. Among such interactions those leading to larger sized aggregates can be sensitively detected by dynamic light scattering (DLS) as a pre in vivo screening method. Random copolymers from N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide and lauryl methacrylate p(HPMA-co-LMA) and copolymers loaded with the model drug domperidone were characterized by DLS in isotonic salt solution and in blood serum. The bare amphiphilic copolymer micelles (Rh=30 nm in isotonic salt solution) formed large a…

Morphological transformations in a dually thermoresponsive coil-rod-coil bioconjugate.

2013

We report the conformational and assembly behavior of a thermoresponsive triblock biohybrid conjugate under aqueous conditions. The triblock comprises of poly(diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate) (PDEGMEMA) conjugated to the ends of a triple-helix forming collagen-like peptide. The circular dichroism (CD) experiment confirms the ability of the collagen-like peptide middle block to assemble as a triple helix in the hybrid conjugate. Above the LCST (∼35 °C), the collapse of the thermoresponsive PDEGMEMA polymer at the ends of the peptide domain resulted in a concomitant increase in the conformational stability of the peptide domain towards thermal denaturation. Upon cooling back, the …

1978

The phenomenon of co-nonsolvency, i.e. the formation of nonsolvents by mixing two solvents, was studied for the system N,N-dimethylformamide/cyclohexane/polystyrene (DMF/CH/PS) which is characterized by the fact that the components of the mixed solvent are only incompletely miscible below 48,6°C. A number of quasibinary sections (stepwise addition of the second solvent to given solutions of the polymer in the first solvent) for a sample (M = 110000) of high molecular uniformity yielded a cloud point surface which gives “island curves” (closed solubility gaps) for constant temperatures between the critical temperature of DMF/CH and the top of the cloud point surface (51,3°C). The attainment …

Quick and reliable routes to phase diagrams for polyethersulfone and polysulfone membrane formation

2000

Phase diagrams were measured and calculated for the ternary membrane forming systems DMF/water/polysulfone and DMF/water/polyethersulfone at different temperatures. Customary experiments yielded cloud point curves, tie lines, and critical compositions. The theoretical computation starts from the Flory-Huggins theory and employs binary interaction parameters g ij that vary with the composition. This information was mainly obtained by means of Headspace-Gas Chromatography (HSGC, yielding the partial pressures of the volatile components); these data were complemented by light scattering and swelling experiments. The calculation of binodals, spinodals, tie lines, and critical points avoids the …

Beiträge zur polymerisation von 2-isopropenylnaphthalin, 3. Anionische homopolymerisation von 2-isopropenylnaphthalin

1981

The anionic homopolymerization of 2-isoprenylnaphthalene with butyllithium in tetrahydrofuran at –78°C is described. The refractive index increment amounts to dn/dc = 0,2084 ml/g for these polymers in toluene at 25°C and wavelength λ = 436 nm. Determination of the molecular weights by light scattering yielded values between 13 000 and 270 000. The second virial coefficients also determined by light scattering measurements are comparable with the corresponding data of poly(α-methylstyrene). A calibration curve is given for gel permeation chromatography of the poly(2-isoprenylnaphthalene)s, whose polymolecularity indexes Mw/Mn lie between 1,06 and 1,2. Their intrinsic viscosity/molecular weig…

Behaviour of modified and unmodified polybutadienes in the semidilute regime

1997

Abstract The association behaviour of polybutadiene modified with 4-phenyl-l,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione was studied in semidilute solution through static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results were compared with the unmodified polybutadiene, whose behavior in semidilute solution was also studied as function of the molecular weight. At higher concentrations a small-angle excess scattering in SLS and a slow mode motion in DLS were observed both for modified and unmodified polybutadienes suggesting the presence of large clusters. Increasing the polymer concentration, the mass fraction of the slow motion increases up to values near 1, indicating a proximity to the gel point. For po…

The influence of hydrophobic substitution on self-association of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) trib…

2007

Abstract A series of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers were synthesized by reaction between poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polyglycidol-b-poly(ethylene oxide) precursor copolymer and four n-alkyl isocyanates: ethyl, propyl, butyl and pentyl. After dissolution in water at room temperature the copolymers spontaneously form micelles. The critical micellization concentrations were determined by UV–VIS spectroscopy. The dimensions of the micelles, the aggregation numbers, and in some cases the micellar shape were determined by dynamic and static light scattering in a relatively broad temperature range. Special attention has be…

Aggregation processes of perylene bisimide diimidazolium salts

2015

The supramolecular aggregation of three diimidazolium- functionalized perylene bisimides, differing in the alkyl chain length was investigated. These salts form aggregates in solvents like chloroform, dichloromethane, and glycerol. Solvent-, concentration-, and temperature-dependent spectroscopic studies were carried out, evidencing the occurrence of an isodesmic, enthalpy-driven aggregation process, underpinned by p–p stacking and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements and SEM images revealed that these salts aggregate in chloroform into elongated structures.

Photodegradation of polyglycidol in aqueous solutions exposed to UV irradiation

2011

The photodegradation of polyglycidol in aqueous solution with UV wavelength of 254 nm was investigated. The experiments were carried out in air at a constant temperature and the photodegradation of polyglycidol (PGl) was compared to that of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), the most widely studied polyether. Size exclusion chromatography with multiangle light scattering detection (SEC-MALLS) was used to measure the changes in the molar masses and molar mass dispersities of polymers during degradation. The molar mass of PGl decreased dramatically during the first period of UV irradiation and then gradually approached a limiting value of 17,000 g/mol, regardless of the initial polymer concentration…
