The production of resveratrol (3,5,4'‐trihydroxystilbene) by grapevinein vitrocultures, and its application to screening for grey mould resistance

The ability of grapevine in vitro cultures to synthesise the phytoalexin precursor resveratrol in response to ultraviolet light irradiations is investigated in order to develop methods for screening for resistance to grey mould (Botrytis cinerea Pers.) in grapevines produced as a result of somatic embryogenesis. It is demonstrated that resveratrol formation can be reproducibly induced in leaves of in vitro plantlets. Differences in the production of resveratrol among the three varieties of Vitis vinifera tested (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon) were consistent with observations regarding their field susceptibility to grey mould. Eye Cataract Simulation Using Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Scattering Obstacles

Polymer dispersed liquid crystals with electrically induced variations of light scattering extent similar to that of transparent PLZT ceramics are used for simulation of different development stages of eye cataract. Wavelength dependencies of scattering are determined in the visible spectral range, and human visual response looking through the scattering obstacle to the onset of various spatial frequency stimuli is determined psychophysically and electrophysiologically in order to find correlation between the scattering extent, visual acuity and visual evoked potential VEP chromatic characteristics.

UV photocatalytic oxidation of paint solvent compounds in air using an annular TiO2-supported reactor

BACKGROUND: One of the most important industrial sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is related to coating and painting applications. In this sense, photocatalytic oxidation can become an innovative and promising alternative for the remediation of air polluted by VOCs. In this study the UV photodegradation of m-xylene, toluene and n-butyl acetate, as representative compounds of paint solvents, was carried out in an annular reactor using a TiO2–glass wool supported catalyst. Influence of polysaccharides on wine protein aggregation.

Abstract Polysaccharides are the major high-molecular weight components of wines. In contrast, proteins occur only in small amounts in wine, but contribute to haze formation. The detailed mechanism of aggregation of these proteins, especially in combination with other wine components, remains unclear. This study demonstrates the different aggregation behavior between a buffer and a model wine system by dynamic light scattering. Arabinogalactan-protein, for example, shows an increased aggregation in the model wine system, while in the buffer system a reducing effect is observed. Durch Lichtstreuungsmessungen wurde der Entropieanteil und der Enthalpieanteil des 2. osmotischen Virialkoeffizienten (A2) von athermischen und exothermischen Losungen von Polystyrol (PS) und Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA) bei 25°C und Normaldruck bestimmt. Zur Auffindung von athermischen und exothermischen Losungsmitteln fur diese Polymeren wurde die Temperaturabhangigkeit des STAUDINGERindex verwendet. Carotenoids are constitutive components of all light-harvesting complexes in plants and many such complexes in bacteria. In the crystal structures of several light-harvesting complexes, carotenoids are seen to span the lipid bilayer and connect components of the complex on both membrane surfaces and/or to mediate the interaction of transmembrane protein helices. Locust flight metabolism studied in vivo by 31P NMR spectroscopy

Flight metabolism of locusts has been extensively studied, but biochemical and physiological methods have led to conflicting results. For this reason the non-invasive and non-destructive method of 31P NMR spectroscopy was used to study migratory locusts, Locusta migratoria, at rest and during flight. 1. In the flight muscle of resting locusts the ratio of phosphoarginine to ATP was the same whether determined by NMR (1.76) or biochemically, but the NMR-visible content of inorganic phosphate (Pi) was only 40% of ATP, i.e., much lower than total Pi as determined biochemically. The Effect of Light on the Growth of Pea Plants and the Subsequent Influence in Shikimate Oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.25) Activity

Summary Pea plants were cultured in white light, red and far red light, and in the dark during a period of three weeks. At several states of development we investigated the activity of the enzyme shikimate oxidoreductase, the amount of fresh and dry matter, and the contents of protein in stem, leaves, cotyledons, and roots. The enzyme activity was found to be distributed organ-specifically and uninfluenced by the phytochrome system, but it was significantly depressed in plants grown in the dark compared to plants grown in white light. The Effect of Light Intensity During Growth of Sinapis alba on the Electron-Transport and the Noncyclic Photophosphorylation

The photosynthetic rate of Sinapis alba can be modified over a wide range by the light intensity during growth. Our present results indicate that there exist regulatory mechanisms in the field of photosynthetic primary reactions. We compared the effect of different light intensities during growth of Sinapis plants on the concentrations of soluble proteins, manganese and lipophilic plastid quinones, the electron flow from water to ferricyanide and noncyclic phosphorylation. We further determined the light dependence curves for the uncoupled electron transport with ferricyanide as electron acceptor and methylammonium-chloride as an uncoupler of photophosphorylation.

Exopolysaccharides favor the survival of Erwinia amylovora under copper stress through different strategies.

Erwinia amylovora causes fire blight, a destructive disease of rosaceous plants very difficult to control. We demonstrated that copper, employed to control plant diseases, induces the "viable-but-nonculturable" (VBNC) state in E. amylovora. Moreover, it was previously reported that copper increases production of its main exopolysaccharide (EPS), amylovoran. In this work, the copper-complexing ability of amylovoran and levan, other major EPS of E. amylovora, was demonstrated.
