Taking firms’ margin targets seriously in a model of competition in supply functions

2022

We introduce price-markup objectives into a model of supply function competition. We characterize the corresponding supply-function equilibrium and study its qualitative properties. Adherence to price-markup targets is conducive to reduced market competition and increased firm profitability. While pursuing such goals reduces social welfare, welfare never drops below the level corresponding to a Cournot oligopoly. Finally, we establish conditions under which consumer preference for fair pricing inhibits the industry's use of markups as a collusive device.

Investigation of thermal stability of ethylene copolymers with POSS - Study under static and dynamic conditions

Abstract In the paper there was studied thermal stability of a series of ethylene copolymers with monoalkenylsiloxy- or monoalkenylsilsesquioxanes (POSS) under dynamic and static conditions. The copolymers proved to be more thermally stable than neat polyethylene and neat silsesquioxane comonomers. The kind and the content of the POSS units significantly affected degradation of the copolymers. Thermal oxidation process resulted in structural changes of the (co)polymers as it was evidenced by the variations in the kind and content of carbonyl, as well as by unsaturated end groups. Modulation of 2′-5′oligoadenylate synthetase by environmental stress in the marine spongeGeodia cydonium

Recently we established the presence of relatively high amounts of 2′-5′oligoadenylates (2′-5′A) and 2′-5′oligoadenylate synthetase (2′-5′A synthetase) in the marine sponge Geodia cydonium. Here we determined by applying radioimmunoassay and high-performance liquid chromatographical methods that the concentration of 2′-5′A and the activity of 2′-5′A synthetase change following exposure of G. cydonium tissue to environmental stress. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have been employed as molecular building blocks for the synthesis of imidazolium cross-linked networks, to be used as heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into cyclic carbonates. In contrast to normal cells, the glycoprotein profile on epithelial tumor cells is distinctly altered. Due to an incomplete formation of the glycan side-chains resulting from a premature sialylation, additional peptide epitopes become accessible to the immune system in mucin-type glycoproteins on tumor cells. NG2 regulates directional migration of oligodendrocyte precursor cells via Rho GTPases and polarity complex proteins.

The transmembrane proteoglycan NG2 is expressed by oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPC), which migrate to axons during developmental myelination and remyelinate in the adult after migration to injured sites. Highly invasive glial tumors also express NG2. Despite the fact that NG2 has been implicated in control of OPC migration, its mode of action remains unknown. Here, we show in vitro and in vivo that NG2 controls migration of OPC through the regulation of cell polarity. In stab wounds in adult mice we show that NG2 controls orientation of OPC toward the wound. Baf/3 cells transfected with the human IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and gp130 (Baf/3-gp130/IL-6R) can only grow in medium containing IL-6. We attempted to interrupt the signal transducing pathway of IL-6 with the help of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) designed against the IL-6R. We studied whether long-term metal exposure has affected life history traits, population growth patterns and genetic diversity of the asexual enchytraeid worm Cognettia sphagnetorum (Vejd.). Enchytraeids from metal contaminated and uncontaminated forest soil were compared by growing them individually in the laboratory and by following their population development in patchily Cu contaminated microcosms. Genetic differences between the two native populations were studied using allozyme electrophoresis. Fennel waste-based films suitable for protecting cultivations.

Biodegradable, flexible, and moisture-resistant films were obtained by recycling fennel waste and adding to fennel homogenates the bean protein phaseolin that was modified or not modified by the enzyme transglutaminase. All films were analyzed for their morphology, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, and susceptibility to biodegradation under soil-like conditions. Our experiments showed that transglutaminase treatment of the phaseolin-containing fennel waste homogenates allowed us to obtain films comparable in their mechanical properties and water vapor permeability to the commercial films Ecoflex and Mater-Bi.
