Immunoelectron microscopy labeling for the identification of oligodendrocytes and their precursor cells
2021
von Hippel-Lindau Protein-Mediated Repression of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Translation Revealed through Use of cDNA Arrays
2003
Based on evidence that the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor protein is associated with polysomes and interacts with translation regulatory factors, we set out to investigate the potential influence of pVHL on protein translation. To this end, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cells that either lacked pVHL or expressed pVHL through stable transfection were used to prepare RNA from cytosolic (unbound) and polysome-bound fractions. Hybridization of cDNA arrays using RNA from each fraction revealed a subset of transcripts whose abundance in polysomes decreased when pVHL function was restored. The tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) mRNA was identified as one of the transcripts that prefere…
Wet-chemical approach for the cell-adhesive modification of polytetrafluoroethylene
2011
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a frequently utilized polymer for the fabrication of synthetic vascular grafts, was surface-modified by means of a wet-chemical process. The inherently non-cell-adhesive polymer does not support cellular attachment, a prerequisite for the endothelialization of luminal surface grafts in small diameter applications. To impart the material with cell-adhesive properties a treatment with sodium-naphthalene provided a basis for the subsequent immobilization of the adhesion promoting RGD-peptide using a hydroxy- and amine-reactive crosslinker. Successful conjugation was shown with cell culture experiments which demonstrated excellent endothelial cell growth on the m…
Identifying and validating the presence of guanine-quadruplexes (G4) within the blood fluke parasite schistosoma mansoni
2021
Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that currently affects over 250 million individuals worldwide. In the absence of an immunoprophylactic vaccine and the recognition that mono-chemotherapeutic control of schistosomiasis by praziquantel has limitations, new strategies for managing disease burden are urgently needed. A better understanding of schistosome biology could identify previously undocumented areas suitable for the development of novel interventions. Here, for the first time, we detail the presence of G-quadruplexes (G4) and putative quadruplex forming sequences (PQS) within the Schistosoma mansoni genome. We find that G4 are present in both intragenic and intergenic regi…
Tri-alkenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes as comonomers and active center modifiers in ethylene copolymerization catalyzed by bis(phenoxy-imi…
2018
Abstract In copolymerization of ethylene (E) with tri-alkenyl-silsesquioxanes (POSS-6-3 and POSS-10-3) were used bis(phenoxy-imine) titanium, zirconium and vanadium catalysts, as well as salen-type vanadium catalysts. There were obtained copolymers with POSS-R-3 units as side branches of polymer chains. The type of employed bis(phenoxy-imine) titanium, zirconium and vanadium catalysts and salen-type catalyst of vanadium determined the copolymer chain termination reactions, as well as the mechanism of modification of the active species by the POSS-R-3 comonomer. POSS-R-3 comonomers caused selective poisoning of bis(phenoxy-imine) zirconium catalyst and they provided protection against tight …
Integrin-dependent and -independent functions of astrocytic fibronectin in retinal angiogenesis
2011
Fibronectin (FN) is a major component of the extracellular matrix and functions in cell adhesion, cell spreading and cell migration. In the retina, FN is transiently expressed and assembled on astrocytes (ACs), which guide sprouting tip cells and deposit a provisional matrix for sprouting angiogenesis. The precise function of FN in retinal angiogenesis is largely unknown. Using genetic tools, we show that astrocytes are the major source of cellular FN during angiogenesis in the mouse retina. Deletion of astrocytic FN reduces radial endothelial migration during vascular plexus formation in a gene dose-dependent manner. This effect correlates with reduced VEGF receptor 2 and PI3K/AKT signalli…
Lead concentrations in feathers and blood of common blackbirds (Turdus merula) and in earthworms inhabiting unpolluted and moderately polluted urban …
2006
9 pages; International audience; Despite the dramatic decrease of atmospheric lead (Pb) concentrations in urban areas of most industrialised countries, we hypothesised that urban common blackbirds (Turdus merula) may still be contaminated by Pb concentrations of toxicological concern due to transfer from soil through the food chain. We sampled blackbirds and earthworms, one of their main preys, in Besan?, a middle-size city of Eastern France (where atmospheric Pb concentrations decreased from 0.5 microg/m(3) in 1987 to nearly 0 in 2002) and in a rural reference site. Lead concentrations were determined in the tissues of the different functional groups of earthworms (anecic, epigeous and end…
Atkritumu poligoni un izgāztuves, to slēgšanas un rekultivācijas iespējas
2017
Latvijā šobrīd izdalīti 10 atkritumu apsaimniekošanas reģioni, kuros ir 11 sadzīves un viens bīstamo atkritumu poligoni. Atkritumu poligonos pastāv dažādas līdz šim neatrisinātas problēmas, tomēr šāds atkritumu apglabāšanas veids ir drošs salīdzinājumā ar vēsturisko mantojumu – atkritumu izgāztuvēm. Oficiāli Latvijā reģistrētas 558 izgāztuves, kuras šobrīd visas ir slēgtas, tomēr tikai nelielai daļai ir veikta atbilstoša rekultivācija. Maģistra darba mērķis bija iepazīties ar normatīvajiem aktiem, literatūru un konstatēt pašreizējo atkritumu noglabāšanas vietu situāciju, novērtēt, kādas ir galvenās atkritumu poligonu un izgāztuvju slēgšanas - rekultivēšanas nepilnības, kādā veidā nodrošināt…
Two-pronged strategy
2004
Cordycepin analogues of 2',5'-oligoadenylate inhibit human immunodeficiency virus infection via inhibition of reverse transcriptase.
1991
Analogues of 2',5'-oligoadenylates (2-5A), the cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) core trimer (Co3) and its 5'-monophosphate derivative (pCo3), were shown to display pronounced anti-human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) activity in vitro. Treatment of HIV-1 infected H9 cells with 1 microM Co3 or pCo3 resulted in an almost 100% inhibition of virus production. The compounds were encapsulated in liposomes targeted by antibodies specific for the T-cell receptor molecule CD3. Substitution of one or two cordycepin units in Co3 or pCo3 decreased the antiviral activity of the compounds. pCo3 did not stimulate 2-5A-dependent ribonuclease L activity and displayed no effect on the amount of cellular…
