3D Printing : Challenging Existing Business Models
2016
Technologies labelled as “disruptive” challenge conventional business procedures. The development of 3D printing technology and additive manufacturing (AM) is expected to transform product design and manufacturing. 3D printing technology makes it possible to produce complex and unique physical products from digitally designed CAD models. It is estimated that the effects of 3D printing on business will be diverse and far‐reaching. Hence, it is vital for business owners to observe how 3D printing may impact on business models and business networks, considering also the effects on stakeholders’ value propositions and on value creation. This paper reports on the potential impact of 3D printing …
Exploring the impact of sustainable value proposition on firm performance
2022
Considering the immense potential of sustainable business models in tackling the broader challenge of corporate sustainability, this paper integrates the literature streams on sustainability practices and organizational business models to analyze the performance implications of a firm's sustainable value proposition. Based on the analysis of a large panel dataset across different industries, consistent with the proposed theory, a sustainable value proposition has been found to have a positive impact on a firm's market-based financial performance (namely, Tobin's Q). Yet, this impact turns out to be highly context-dependent. In particular, the findings reveal that a firm's R&D capabilities i…
Kohti yhteisen arvon tuottamista? : K-kauppiaiden ja S-ryhmän marketpäälliköiden näkemyksiä vastuullisuudesta
2012
Mallin perusajatuksena on yhdistää yrityksen taloudellinen menestys yhteisölliseen kehitykseen. Kirjallisuuden perusteella v…
The Design Towards a News Aggregator Subscription Service: Results from An Online Experiment
2021
The newspaper industry is on a quest to discover sustainable business models. Digital subscriptions are stable revenue generators for most publishers. That being said, smaller publishers face challenges. By not having the same resource base to offset costs compared to larger ones, small publishers are in a constant state of financial unpredictability. Another persistent problem among them is the high churn rate of subscriptions (i.e., the cancelation rate), which suggests a value misalignment between readers and service. New services like news aggregators may promise publishers a large pool of paying readers, as readers have access to diverse content by different publishers and are willing …
Digitalization and Evolution of Business Model Pathways Among Japanese Software SMEs
2019
This chapter analyzes five Japanese software small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to better understand how their decision-making pathways inside the organization evolve as they develop new business models. Event-state mapping method was applied to analyze the business model pathways of the case firms. We found that once triggered, pathways included various actors and a series of steps until an outcome, the new business model, was reached. The findings indicate that the decision pathways to new models became increasingly complex over the years and the number of individuals and teams involved increases as business model evolved further. peerReviewed
Thinking about industry decline : A qualitative meta-analysis and future research directions
2018
We analyze historical and longitudinal research focusing on industry decline. Our analysis suggests that the literature’s general reliance on a few meta-theoretical arguments has important consequences for how decline is framed and explained. We identify four meta-theoretical clusters in the literature: politics and market dynamics are seen as exogenous factors with deterministic features, whereas technology and management capabilities are framed as firm-internal failures with causally questionable explanations of how firm-level characteristics explain industry-level decline. We propose that it is important to understand the limitations of distinct meta-theoretical arguments for an enhanced…
Software Startup ESSENCE : How Should Software Startups Work?
2020
Software startups need to work in a systematic fashion just like mature organizations. However, existing software engineering methods and practices are not aimed at software startups. They do not account for the business aspect of startups and may not be well suited for software startups in general. The Lean Startup Methodology on the other hand contains some useful practices for software startups but is nonetheless impractical, offering little in the way of telling you what to do. Software startups are thus required to tailor their own method. Currently, many software startups simply work ad hoc or use various Agile methods and practices. In terms of Agile methods and practices, little con…
Evolution of operator business models in the future Internet of Things
2017
The Internet of Things is a paradigm or vision, where virtually any object can be connected to Internet, enabling new smart services to people and businesses. Mobile network operators have entered the aspiring market, but because of the novelty of the paradigm, many aspects of business and technology in the area are still undiscovered. In this thesis, views of possible mobile network operator business models were presented, and the object was to discover, how mobile network operator business models change in the future Internet of Things. The research based on theoretical concepts of value, innovation diffusion and technology adoption life cycle, as well as business models, corporate strate…
Tulevaisuuden kuluttaja : Erika 2020-hankkeen aineistonkuvaus ja tutkimusraportti
2011
Julkaisussa esitellään keväällä 2011 kerätty Erika 2020 Tulevaisuuden kuluttaja -kyselyaineisto. Kyselyn tavoitettu otos oli kaikkiaan 1641 18–75-vuotiasta suomenkielistä suomalaista. 18–65-vuotiailta kuluttajilta aineisto kerättiin verkkokyselyllä ja yli 65-vuotiaat haastateltiin puhelimitse. Otantamenetelmänä käytettiin yksinkertaista satunnaisotantaa. Verkkokyselyn vastaajat poimittiin tutkimusyrityksen Internet-paneelista ja puhelinhaastatteluihin otanta toteutettiin yhteystietoalan yrityksen rekisteristä. Aineistonkeruusta vastasi Jyväskylän yliopiston sosiologian oppiaine. Kyselyn toteutukseen osallistuivat lisäksi Jyväskylän yliopiston kauppakorkeakoulun, Tampereen yliopiston johtami…
