High-Resolution Fluorescence Spectra of Airborne Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosols: Comparisons to Primary Biological Aerosol Particles and Implica…

2021

Aqueous extracts of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOAs) have been found to exhibit fluorescence that may interfere with the laser/light-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs). In this study, we quantified the interference of BSOAs to PBAPs by directly measuring airborne BSOA particles, rather than aqueous extracts. BSOAs were generated by the reaction of d-limonene (LIM) or α-pinene (PIN) and ozone (O3) with or without ammonia in a chamber under controlled conditions. With an excitation wavelength of 355 nm, BSOAs exhibited peak emissions at 464–475 nm, while fungal spores exhibited peak emissions at 460–483 nm; the fluorescence intensit…

Compositions of the Volatile Oils of Citrus Macroptera and C. Maxima

2012

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the fresh peels of Citrus macroptera Montr. and C maxima(Burm.) Merr. were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The yields of oil ranged from 0.53% in C macroptera to 0.13% in C maxima cultivar (white). Forty-seven compounds were identified in the oils with limonene (55.3-80.0%), dodecyl acrylate (2.2-8.0%), geranial (0.4-3.5%), trans-linalool oxide (1.0-2.8%), α-terpineol (0.7-2.3%), linalool (0.7-1.5%) and cis- linalool oxide (0.5-1.4%) identified as major compounds. The oil of C. macroptera contained limonene (55.3%), β-caryophyllene (4.7%) and geranial (3.5%) as main compounds. Similarly, oils from two C maxima(pink and white) cultivars were r…

Identification of Volatile Compounds in Blackcurrant Berries: Differences Among Cultivars

2021

Berries of blackcurrant are known to produce a strong flavor. Some previous studies have reported that a given cultivar of blackcurrant can produce berries with a specific profile of volatile compounds. For the Burgundy region in France, the Noir de Bourgogne cultivar is especially important because it is the main ingredient of a liquor with a designation of origin. The aim of the present study was to characterize the volatile fractions of berries from 15 cultivars in order to explore the possibility of using different cultivars for liquor production. The plants were cultivated under the same conditions and harvested in the same year. The volatile fractions of the harvested berries were ana…

Study of quantitative and qualitative variations in essential oils of Sicilian Rosmarinus officials L.

2015

In this study the chemical characterizations of 10 sicilian biotypes of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oils are reported. The main goal was to analyze the relationship between the essential oils yield and the geographical distribution of the species plants. The essential oils were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The statistical methods Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis were used to cluster biotypes according to the chemical composition of the essential oils. The essential oil yield ranged from 0.8 - 2.3 (v/w). 82 compounds have been identified, these represent 96.7-99.9% of the essential oil. The compounds mostly represented in the essential oils were: 1.8- C…

Grapefruit essential oils inhibit quorum sensing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

2019

Citrus essential oils are used in food to confer flavor and aromas. The citrus essential oils have been granted as GRAS and could be used as antimicrobial additives to control bacterial quorum sensing from potential food bacterial pathogens. The chemical composition and inhibitory activity of Citrus paradisi (grapefruit) essential oils obtained by cold-pressed method (EOP) and cold-pressed method followed by steam distillation, against Pseudomonas aeruginosa were determined . The GC-MS analyses of the oil indicated the amount of the essential oil components was highest with D-limonene in both cases. However, the extraction method modified the chemical composition. EOP had higher amount of …

Effect of the lemon essential oils on the safety and sensory quality of salted sardines (Sardina pilchardus Walbaum 1792)

2017

The main aim of this research was to investigate the biopreservative effects of lemon essential oil (EO) micro-emulsions on salted sardines. The experimental design included two experimental trials, SR1 and SR2 carried out with 25 ml of lemon EO micro-emulsion at 0.3 and 1.0% (v/v), respectively, and a control trial performed without EO addition. Chemical analyses on salted sardines inoculated with the EOs clearly showed a substantial persistence of several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) belonging to groups of monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons derived from EOs during the entire period of ripening. In particular, the molecules mostly represen…

High Yields of Shrimp Oil Rich in Omega-3 and Natural Astaxanthin from Shrimp Waste

2020

A valued marine oil rich in omega-3 lipids and natural astaxanthin is obtained with remarkably high yield (up to S wt %) extending to pink shrimp waste (head and carapace) using the approach to extract fish oil from fish processing byproducts using D-limonene. Biobased limonene is an excellent solvent for both unsaturated lipids and astaxanthin-based carotenoids preventing oxidative degradation during the extraction cycle including solvent separation at 85 degrees C. Explaining the deep red color of the shrimp oil obtained, computational simulation suggests that D-limonene is also a good solvent for natural astaxanthin abundant in shrimp.

Combination strategies for enhancing transdermal absorption of sumatriptan through skin

2006

The aim of the present work was to characterize in vitro sumatriptan transdermal absorption through human skin and to investigate the effect of chemical enhancers and iontophoresis applied both individually and in combination. A secondary objective was to compare the results obtained with those in porcine skin under the same conditions, in order to characterize the relationship between the two skin models and validate the porcine model for further research use. Transdermal flux of sumatriptan was determined in different situations: (a) after pre-treatment of human skin with ethanol, Azone (1-dodecyl-azacycloheptan-2-one), polyethylene glycol 600 and R-(+)-limonene, (b) under iontophoresis a…

Poly (lactic acid)/D-limonene/ZnO bio-nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties

2022

[EN] Antimicrobial films of poly (lactic acid) (PLA)/D-limonene/zinc oxide (ZnO)-based bio-nanocomposites were prepared via melt compounding and subsequent thermocompression. D-limonene was incorporated at concentrations of 10 or 20 wt%, and ZnO pure nanoparticles and those organically modified with oleic acid (O-ZnO), with an average diameter of 13.5 nm, were included at concentrations of 3, 5, and 8 wt%. The plasticizing effect of D-Limonene was corroborated by a decrease in the glass transition temperature compared to pure PLA. The presence of ZnO and O-ZnO in the PLA matrix promoted a slight increase in the degree of crystallinity due to its nucleant performance. Although ZnO and O-ZnO …

Development of antimigraine transdermal delivery systems of pizotifen malate.

2015

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a transdermal delivery system of pizotifen malate. Pizotifen is frequently used in the preventive treatment of migraine, but is also indicated in eating disorders. In the course of the project, the effects of chemical enhancers such as ethanol, 1,8-cineole, limonene, azone and different fatty acids (decanoic, decenoic, dodecanoic, linoleic and oleic acids) were determined, first using a pizotifen solution. Steady state flux, diffusion and partition parameters were estimated by fitting the Scheuplein equation to the data obtained. Among the chemical enhancers studied, decenoic acid showed the highest enhancement activity, which seeme…
